After Valve changed Trade Up Contracts in October 2025 to let players trade five Covert items for knives or gloves, third-party trackers reported an estimated market-value decline of roughly $1.7 billion to $1.8 billion. The figure describes a modeled change in tracked item value—not audited losses suffered by players—and this was a 2025 event, not a new October 2026 update.
What Valve changed in the October 2025 update
Valve expanded Trade Up Contracts, which let players exchange eligible weapon skins for a higher-tier item. Under the new rules, five Covert items could produce a knife or gloves, depending on whether the inputs were StatTrak or regular items and which collections they came from. The change made these rare items attainable through a route that had not previously existed.
- Five StatTrak Covert items: can be exchanged for a StatTrak Knife from one of the input items’ collections.
- Five regular Covert items: can be exchanged for a regular Knife or regular Gloves item from one of the input items’ collections.
Valve’s update announcement is on the official Counter-Strike news page. Contemporary reporting reproduced the updated contract rules; Ars Technica also reported on the market reaction: Ars Technica’s October 23, 2025 coverage.
Where the nearly $2 billion estimate came from
The headline number came from third-party market tracking, not Valve. Ars Technica reported that Pricempire’s estimated market value fell from just over $6 billion to just under $4.3 billion after the update. GameSpot reported a decline of roughly $1.75 billion, citing Bloomberg’s reporting on Pricempire. These figures are different reports of a similar estimated drop, rather than an official valuation: GameSpot’s October 23, 2025 report.

That estimate should not be read as $1.75 billion in cash disappearing from players’ accounts. A tracker’s aggregate value is a modeled estimate of items, and the cited reports do not establish how much owners actually realized in sales or how much every inventory changed in value.
Why knives and gloves fell while some weapon skins rose
The update altered both sides of the market. Knives and gloves became obtainable through five-item contracts, which could reduce their scarcity premium and put downward pressure on their prices. At the same time, eligible Covert weapon skins became inputs for those contracts, potentially making some of them more desirable.

Ars Technica cited examples of that uneven reaction: a knife’s minimum price fell by more than 50 percent, while the median Steam sale price for a P90 Asiimov rose from $10 to more than $100. Those are time-specific examples reported around the update, not current prices, and they do not show that every knife, glove, or Covert skin moved the same way. The examples also use different measures—minimum price and median sale price—so they should not be treated as directly comparable.
Why CS2 has no definitive market-cap figure
A true market capitalization would require multiplying each item’s price by its circulating supply. Valve does not publish the supply figures needed for that calculation, and skin trackers use different methods and coverage. Their estimates can therefore disagree without either representing an audited total.

For example, SteamDB reported a tracked floor value of $1,051,018 on October 7, 2026. Its method adds the cheapest fee-included ask for one unit of each item it tracks; SteamDB describes the result as an unsupply-weighted hard lower bound. It is not comparable to a supply-weighted market estimate. SteamDB also listed a CSMarketCap estimate of $7.1 billion dated July 4, 2026, while cautioning that providers’ methods differ. That later estimate cannot establish a recovery from the October 2025 drop without a consistent method and time series. See SteamDB’s market statistics and methodology.
When reading claims about the skin market’s size, check who produced the estimate, its date and definition, what marketplaces and items it covers, and whether it uses asking prices or completed sales. A figure built from one provider’s model should not be presented as directly interchangeable with another provider’s total or a one-item-per-skin floor calculation.

What the update does—and does not—say about skin values
The update changed the way players could obtain certain knives and gloves, and contemporary coverage reported sharp but uneven price movement afterward. It does not establish that all CS2 skins lost value, that each player’s inventory fell by a set percentage, or that this one change explains later market movements. The reported aggregate decline is best understood as a dated tracker estimate following a major change in item availability.
