Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA DayZ restart normally reloads the saved world; it is not automatically a wipe. A car or tent that seems to have despawned was usually moved during the restart, ruined and removed by cleanup, past its lifetime, lost in a rollback or wipe, or affected by a broken vehicle event configuration. Find out which case applies before changing XML files: vehicles are controlled by the event system, while item lifetimes and persistence storage handle different parts of the problem.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What “despawned” means in DayZ
Players use despawn for several different outcomes. DayZ treats them differently, so the repair depends on what actually happened:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Movement: the object still exists but slid, rolled or shifted during the restart.
- Cleanup: the object was ruined or its lifetime expired, so the server removed it.
- Persistence loss: the server loaded an older world state, suffered corruption, or started after a wipe or accidental deletion.
- Event failure: a vehicle was not respawned because its dynamic event, spawn coordinates or cleanup rules are wrong.
A restart can expose any of these conditions, but the restart itself is not proof that the server deleted the object. Start with the object’s location, condition and timing, then inspect configuration and persistence.
Use scope, timing and condition to identify the cause
Record what disappeared and when. The pattern usually points to the responsible layer before you touch a setting.

| Observed pattern | Most likely explanation | First check | Configuration layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| One intact car is missing immediately after a normal restart | The car moved or slid | Search the original spot, slopes, nearby buildings and likely roll paths | World position in persistent storage |
| Several vehicles are missing after an XML change or server update | Vehicle event or persistence problem | Compare the event files and inspect the saved world state | events.xml, cfgeventspawns.xml, storage_1/ |
| A vehicle or tent was ruined before it vanished | Cleanup removed a ruined object | Check its last known damage state | Cleanup and lifetime rules |
| An object disappears after weeks of inactivity | Its lifetime expired | Inspect the class lifetime and recent interaction history | types.xml or the mod’s class definition |
| Everything placed in the world reverted after a crash or host migration | Rollback, corruption or a wipe | Check host/database logs and backups | storage_1/ and host operations |
Always note the server type (official or private), game version, map, mod list and the time of the restart. A value that is correct for a vanilla server may not apply to a modded class or a different mission.
First check whether the vehicle or tent moved
DayZ warns that vehicles can occasionally move or slide during a server restart, depending on where they were parked. Slopes, uneven ground, collision with buildings and other geometry make this more likely. A tent can also be hard to see if it was placed behind a structure or shifted into terrain.
Recommended Free Tools
- Return to the exact position and inspect behind walls, sheds, fences, rocks and dense vegetation.
- Follow the downhill direction and any open path a rolling vehicle could have taken. Check ditches, roads, riverbanks and the edges of compounds.
- Search far enough to account for a long slide, but do not assume a moved vehicle was deleted until this search is complete.
- Ask other administrators whether they moved, repaired or dismantled the object while the server was online.
If you find the same car nearby, the persistence system did its job; the problem is placement stability, not a missing lifetime value. Move it to level ground, away from collision surfaces, before the next restart.
Ruined objects are cleaned up even when persistence is enabled
Persistence does not make an object indestructible. DayZ removes ruined vehicles and ruined tents under its cleanup rules. A server can therefore save an object correctly and still remove it on a later load because its condition had reached the ruined state.
Vehicles
Check the last condition of the chassis, engine and other required components. A vehicle that could no longer be driven may have been marked ruined before the restart. If it was destroyed by a player, collision or environmental damage, persistence will not preserve it as a usable car.
Tents
Check whether the tent was torn down, damaged beyond repair or affected by an object wipe. A tent that is still intact should be investigated through lifetime and persistence checks instead of assuming that every restart removes tents.
Lifetime cleanup is separate from persistence
Persistence answers “should this object survive a restart?” Lifetime answers “how long may the economy keep this class before cleanup?” Changing one does not automatically change the other.
Vanilla tent lifetime reference
Current DayZ Wiki reference pages accessed in 2026 list a 45-day lifetime for car, large, medium and canopy tents. This is a cleanup lifetime, not a guarantee that a tent survives damage, a wipe or a storage rollback. Interacting with a persistent object resets its cleanup timer, so opening, using or otherwise interacting with a tent keeps its timer current.
| Object class | Published lifetime reference | What can still remove it |
|---|---|---|
| Car tent | 45 days (DayZ Wiki reference, accessed 2026) | Ruined condition, wipe, rollback or persistence loss |
| Large tent | 45 days (DayZ Wiki reference, accessed 2026) | Ruined condition, wipe, rollback or persistence loss |
| Medium tent | 45 days (DayZ Wiki reference, accessed 2026) | Ruined condition, wipe, rollback or persistence loss |
| Canopy tent | 45 days (DayZ Wiki reference, accessed 2026) | Ruined condition, wipe, rollback or persistence loss |
Do not transfer that number to a modded tent or vehicle. A mod can define a different class, lifetime or cleanup behavior.
Where lifetime values are defined
For economy-managed item classes, types.xml contains lifetime and related economy values. Container contents can inherit the lifetime of their container, which is why changing only the lifetime of an item inside a tent may not produce the result you expect.

Understand the vehicle event system
Vehicles are not repaired by changing a lifetime in types.xml alone. DayZ uses events to create and maintain vehicle spawns.

events.xml
This file controls whether a dynamic vehicle event is active and how many instances the event may maintain. If the relevant event is disabled, malformed or limited to an unintended count, cars may fail to appear after an object is removed.
cfgeventspawns.xml
This file supplies coordinates for fixed event spawns. An active event with no matching or usable coordinates cannot create the expected vehicle at its locations. Check that the event name and spawn definitions match exactly, including capitalization and the map used by the server.

Wrecks can occupy vehicle slots
Damaged or wrecked vehicles may still count against an event’s available slots. In that situation, the server believes the event has reached its limit and does not create a replacement. The documented remove_damaged="1" setting is a cleanup check to consider where it is appropriate for your event configuration. Treat it as a deliberate policy choice: removing damaged vehicles can clear blocked slots, but it also removes objects players might otherwise repair.
Inspect the server log after a restart for XML parse errors, event initialization failures and messages about unavailable spawn points. Fix syntax and matching names before changing lifetimes.
Protect storage_1/ before changing anything
The storage_1/ directory contains serialized world state, including placed objects and vehicle positions. Deleting it removes placed objects and can reset the world state you are trying to recover. A host-side wipe or failed database operation can have the same practical effect.
- Stop the server completely. Do not edit persistence files while the process is running.
- Make a dated, separate backup of
storage_1/and the server configuration files. - Compare the current files with the most recent known-good backup. Look for a rollback timestamp, an unexpectedly new empty directory, missing files or a host migration.
- Check host and database logs for disconnects, failed writes, disk errors and automated wipe actions.
- Restore only after preserving the current state and confirming that the backup belongs to this server, map and mission.
Persistence is tied to the object’s home server. World items do not follow a character to another server unless the character carries them. Moving a mission, changing hosts or joining a different server can therefore make a stored tent or vehicle appear absent even though the original server still has its state.

How to fix a missing vehicle or tent: a safe diagnostic procedure
Apply one change at a time and observe one complete restart cycle. This prevents a configuration edit from being mistaken for the cause or the cure.
- Define the scope. Write down the class, location, last known condition, last interaction and the exact restart when it disappeared. Determine whether one object or an entire category is affected.
- Classify the restart. Confirm that it was a planned restart rather than a crash, host migration, database disconnect or wipe. A rollback requires a persistence investigation, not an XML lifetime edit.
- Search for movement. Check the original location, nearby structures, slopes and likely roll paths. Record the result rather than immediately spawning a replacement.
- Check damage. Establish whether the object was ruined. If it was ruined, cleanup is the expected explanation and changing persistence will not resurrect it.
- Check the lifetime. For a vanilla or economy-managed class, inspect its entry in
types.xml. For a modded class, inspect the mod’s definition. Confirm whether the object was interacted with recently, because interaction resets the cleanup timer for persistent objects. - Check vehicle events. For a missing car, verify the event in
events.xml, its coordinates incfgeventspawns.xml, the event count and whether wrecks are occupying slots. Review whetherremove_damaged="1"is suitable for the server’s cleanup policy. - Check persistence. With the server stopped, back up
storage_1/and inspect for rollback, corruption, accidental deletion or a wipe. Do not delete the directory as a first fix. - Make the smallest edit. Change only the setting implicated by the evidence. Keep an original copy of every edited file and record the date, class and value changed.
- Restart and observe. Start the server, verify the log has no XML errors, test the relevant spawn or object, and watch the next planned restart. If the problem persists, revert the last change before testing another layer.
What each configuration file can—and cannot—fix
| File or directory | Use it for | Do not use it as a substitute for |
|---|---|---|
types.xml |
Item class lifetime and economy values; container relationships can affect contents | Vehicle event activation or spawn coordinates |
events.xml |
Dynamic vehicle event activation and counts | Recovering a deleted or rolled-back world state |
cfgeventspawns.xml |
Coordinates for fixed vehicle events | Setting an item’s cleanup lifetime |
storage_1/ |
Serialized world state, including placed objects and vehicle positions | Defining new vehicle spawn points |
globals.xml and related economy settings |
Other cleanup and restart-related controls documented for the server | Repairing malformed event definitions or restoring a missing backup |
The file names alone do not identify the correct value. Always match the setting to the server version, map, mission and mod list. A configuration copied from another server can reference classes or coordinates that do not exist on yours.

Changing only a lifetime to fix a missing car
A vehicle can have a valid lifetime and still fail to spawn because its event is disabled, its coordinates do not match, or wrecks fill the event’s slots. Inspect the event files before editing types.xml.
Deleting persistence to “refresh” the server
Removing storage_1/ is destructive: placed objects disappear and the saved vehicle positions are lost. Back it up first and use deletion only when you intentionally want the consequences of a wipe and have verified the host’s procedure.
Editing while the server is running
The running process can overwrite your edits on shutdown or leave a partially written state. Stop the server, back up, edit offline, validate the configuration, then start it.
Assuming every missing object is a wipe
A single missing vehicle immediately after a restart is more consistent with movement than a global wipe. Search before restoring backups or changing event counts.

Copying vanilla values to modded classes
Modded vehicles and tents may use different class names and lifetimes. Verify the mod’s definition instead of applying the 45-day vanilla tent reference to an unrelated class.
Changing several files at once
If you edit events, lifetimes and persistence together, you cannot tell which change affected the result. Keep a change log and test one layer per restart.

- Park vehicles on level ground, clear of walls, rocks and other collision surfaces.
- Keep a scheduled, dated backup of
storage_1/and configuration files before maintenance. - Stop the server before editing XML or persistence data.
- Validate
events.xmlandcfgeventspawns.xmlafter map, mission or mod changes. - Monitor logs for event errors, failed writes, database disconnects and host migrations.
- Tell players that interacting with a persistent tent resets its cleanup timer, while ruined objects remain subject to removal.
- Document the server version, map, mods and every configuration change so a later restart can be compared with a known-good state.
When to restore a backup or contact the host
Restore a known-good persistence backup when multiple unrelated placed objects revert at the same time, the current storage_1/ is empty or newly created, or logs show a failed write followed by a restart. Preserve the current directory before restoring so the host can diagnose the failure.
Contact the host when the server experienced a database disconnect, storage error, automated wipe or migration that you did not authorize. Provide the restart time, affected objects, server identity, map, mod list, logs and both the current and backup persistence timestamps. A host cannot reliably recover an object that was never written or whose only backup has been overwritten.
A practical decision tree
- One object missing, restart was normal: search for movement, then check damage and lifetime.
- Many vehicles missing, tents remain: inspect vehicle events, spawn coordinates, wreck occupancy and event-related log errors.
- Vehicles and tents missing together: inspect
storage_1/, rollback indicators, host logs and wipe history. - Objects disappear only after long inactivity: inspect class lifetimes and interaction history.
- Only a modded class is affected: use that mod’s class definition and server documentation; do not infer a value from vanilla objects.
This sequence separates movement, cleanup, event configuration and persistence failure without destroying evidence. It also explains why a single universal “anti-despawn” setting does not exist.
