Why Deep-Sea Canyons Support So Much Unusual Marine Life

Deep-sea canyons bring together varied habitats and energetic currents that move food and nutrients. Those conditions can support distinctive communities, though the effect varies by canyon.

Deep-sea canyons can support unusual marine communities because their steep, varied terrain creates many habitats close together, while changing currents move food and sediment through them. Hard rock offers places for corals and sponges to attach; nearby soft bottoms support different animals; and flows can carry suspended particles to filter-feeders or, in some settings, lift nutrients toward sunlit waters. The result can be distinctive and locally productive ecosystems—not a guarantee that every canyon is richer in life than the slope beside it.

What makes a submarine canyon different?

A submarine canyon is a steep-sided incision in the continental margin, extending from shallower waters toward the deep sea. It is not simply a trench filled with water, nor is it one uniform habitat. A single canyon system may include cliffs, ledges, ridges, rock outcrops, boulders, sediment-covered floors and, in some places, coral patches or chemosynthetic settings. Depth and bottom type can change over short distances.

That variety matters because marine organisms have different needs. A coral or sponge needs a firm surface to settle and grow; an animal living in or on soft sediment encounters a different set of conditions and food sources. The canyon’s shape also changes how water flows across those surfaces. Terrain, water movement and food availability work together, producing a patchwork of ecological niches rather than one canyon-wide environment.

How does canyon terrain create habitat variety?

Hard surfaces give attached animals somewhere to live

Steep walls, ledges and exposed rock can provide attachment points in places where a soft, shifting bottom would not. Deep-sea corals and sponges can grow on these hard surfaces, adding structure that other organisms may use. The result is not just a collection of attached animals: coral and sponge growth can make the bottom more three-dimensional, providing additional surfaces and spaces for invertebrates and fish.

NOAA Ocean Exploration’s account of canyons along the Atlantic margin describes habitats ranging from cliff walls and rocks to boulders, deep-sea corals, chemosynthetic ecosystems and soft sediments. Its regional observations include stony corals such as Lophelia pertusa and Solenosmilia variabilis, cup corals in the genus Desmophyllum, and octocorals and black corals recorded on hard substrates. These examples illustrate the range of life in that Atlantic-margin exploration; they should not be treated as a species list for canyons everywhere.

Soft bottoms add a different kind of community

Not every part of a canyon is bare rock. Sediment supports organisms that live on its surface or within it, and its composition and food content can differ from those on nearby slopes. In the same canyon, a rocky wall and a sedimented floor can therefore host communities with different physical requirements and feeding opportunities. This mosaic helps explain how a canyon can contain a broad range of life without every square metre being equally rich.

How do currents bring food through a canyon?

Currents, tides and internal waves interact with steep canyon walls and uneven bottoms. These flows can shift sediment, suspend particles and move organic material down a canyon or along its walls. That motion helps shape the habitat, but it also affects which food is available to animals living there.

Suspended particles feed filter-feeders

Corals and other suspension-feeders capture food particles carried by water rather than having to encounter food only on the seabed. NOAA Ocean Exploration describes swift currents along steep walls transferring and resuspending sediment. Suspended material can provide food to animals such as deep-sea corals. A current passing an exposed wall can thus connect material moving through the water to organisms fixed in place on the rock.

Transport does not mean every particle is nutritious or that every current improves feeding. Flow can carry organic matter, mineral sediment and other material, and its direction and strength vary. The important ecological point is that the canyon’s relief can redirect and resuspend material, changing where it travels and where animals may encounter it.

Transport can move waste as well as food

The same pathways that redistribute natural organic matter can carry unwanted material. A broad review of canyon ecology describes enhanced down-canyon transport of litter. This is a reminder that canyon currents are not inherently beneficial: they can connect habitats to food, but they can also move debris or other material into deep areas. The precise effect depends on what is being transported and where it settles.

Can canyons send nutrients toward the surface?

In some settings, interactions between currents and steep canyon relief can form eddies and drive upwelling: the upward movement of deeper, nutrient-rich water. NOAA Fisheries’ account of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts region describes nitrates and phosphates being brought toward sunlit waters, where they can support phytoplankton. Zooplankton feed on this production, and small fish and larger predators can in turn feed on plankton or on one another.

This mechanism can link conditions near the seabed with life in the water column above it. It is distinct from the canyon-floor food supply: benthic animals may also rely on organic particles transported or resuspended at depth. A canyon can therefore influence food webs through more than one route, from particles moving near the bottom to nutrients supporting plankton near the surface.

Upwelling is not an automatic property of every canyon. It depends on local oceanography, including how currents meet the canyon’s shape. NOAA’s descriptions concern particular regional settings; they do not establish that every submarine canyon creates an equally strong nutrient pulse or supports the same food-web response.

What kinds of animals use canyon habitats?

Different parts of a canyon support animals with different ways of life. Corals and sponges are attached to hard surfaces; other invertebrates occupy rocky or sedimented bottoms; and fish and other mobile animals can move through the canyon or the water above it. These categories should not be blurred: a species recorded in the wider region is not necessarily a resident of the canyon floor.

In the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts area, NOAA Fisheries names corals, sponges, invertebrates, squid, octopus, skates, flounders and crabs among the animals associated with the canyons. Its overview also discusses whales and other mobile animals using the wider region. This is a geographically specific illustration of the range of life around Oceanographer, Gilbert and Lydonia canyons, not a universal inventory of submarine-canyon species.

Such variety arises from the combination of places to settle, different depths and bottom types, and moving water that redistributes food. It does not mean all these animals share the same habitat or depend on the same canyon process. A whale passing through a regional area, a coral attached to a wall and an invertebrate living in sediment represent different ecological relationships with the canyon.

Are canyons always more biodiverse than nearby slopes?

No. Canyon conditions can support distinctive communities and locally high abundance or diversity, but the difference varies from site to site. Canyon shape, depth, substrate, currents, food supply and local chemistry differ, and those differences affect which organisms are present and how many are found. There is no single globally representative figure for how much more abundant or diverse life is in canyons than on adjacent slopes.

It also helps to distinguish three measures that are often bundled together:

  • Density is how many organisms occur in a defined area or sample.
  • Diversity describes the variety of species or other biological groups represented.
  • Biomass is the combined mass of organisms in an area or sample.

A site can score differently on these measures. More individuals do not necessarily mean more kinds of organisms, and a diversity difference is not the same as a biomass difference. A comparison is meaningful only when it specifies what was measured, where samples were taken and which nearby habitat was used as the reference.

USGS records a 2020 study comparing macrofaunal density and diversity patterns in Baltimore and Norfolk canyons with nearby slope settings. Its scope is a comparison of those particular locations, not proof of a universal canyon effect. Another USGS-listed study, published in 2023, uses carbon and nitrogen isotope mapping to investigate food-web structure in submarine canyons and adjacent slopes. Isotope patterns help examine differences in energy pathways; the study’s framing itself highlights that food webs can be heterogeneous rather than identical across a canyon and slope.

NOAA’s northeastern U.S. exploration account says canyons may have higher biodiversity and biomass than adjacent slopes. That qualified observation is consistent with the idea that some canyons are locally productive, but it is not a rule for all canyons. NOAA’s 2013 expedition account also describes organic matter and nutrient-rich sediments concentrated in canyon areas and strong currents exposing hard substrate. Those observations provide regional, expedition-era context—not a current census of every canyon or evidence that every site has the same abundance.

Why does the answer change from one canyon to another?

A useful comparison has to look beyond the word “canyon.” Researchers and readers need to consider the features that differ between sites:

  • Depth and shape: These affect which habitats occur and how water interacts with the bottom.
  • Bottom material: Exposed rock, coral habitat, boulders and soft sediments offer different conditions for settlement and feeding.
  • Flow: Tides, internal waves and other currents vary in strength and direction; some settings also experience eddies or upwelling.
  • Food and nutrient movement: Organic particles and nutrients may be transported or concentrated differently from one canyon to another.
  • Community measurements: Species composition, density, diversity and biomass answer different questions and need to be compared on consistent terms.
  • Survey coverage: A poorly sampled site cannot be confidently compared with a well-studied one; observations also describe the places and times when surveys occurred.

These factors explain why “biodiversity hotspot” can be a useful description of a particular canyon while still being misleading as a blanket label for all canyons. Local conditions—not the landform’s name alone—determine the biological result.

What threatens canyon ecosystems?

Submarine canyons are not isolated from human activity. The 2017 review by Fernandez-Arcaya and colleagues lists fishing, mine-tailings dumping and oil and gas extraction among pressures relevant to canyon environments. Which pressures apply, and how severe their effects are, depend on the location and activity. The review also discusses the possibility that climate-driven changes could alter current intensity, while emphasizing that canyon ecology and the impacts on it remain incompletely understood.

Physical disturbance, material transported into a canyon and changes in water movement can affect different parts of the habitat in different ways. A pressure that damages a hard-bottom community may not have the same consequences as one that changes the food reaching sediment-dwelling animals. Because canyons contain a mosaic of habitats and interconnected transport pathways, understanding effects requires attention to the specific site and process rather than assuming a uniform response.

Better knowledge depends on surveys that record habitat, currents, food pathways and biological communities together. The USGS comparisons of canyon and slope fauna, and its isotope mapping of food-web variation, illustrate different ways to investigate those relationships. Their existence also underscores a basic limit: the diversity of canyon settings and the difficulty of observing the deep sea mean that broad claims should remain carefully qualified.

The central reason canyon life is unusual

Deep-sea canyons combine rugged terrain with moving water. Their walls, ledges, rocks and sediments create different habitats close together; their currents can deliver or resuspend food, shift sediment and, in some places, help bring nutrients toward surface waters. Those interacting conditions can support communities unlike those on neighboring slopes and make some canyon areas locally productive. The effect is real but not uniform: each canyon’s life reflects its own depth, shape, substrate, currents, food supply and survey history.
