Madden can help you learn to recognize formations, understand what a play is trying to do, and see how pre-snap choices affect an outcome. The most useful approach is to treat each call as a question: What is the offense trying to create? What might the defense do in response? What changed when I adjusted the play? Madden is a visual practice tool, not a substitute for learning every part of real football or a team’s actual coaching system.
EA’s current playbook guidance for Madden NFL 27 recommends exploring formations and testing calls in Team Practice before relying on them in modes such as Franchise or Madden Ultimate Team. Use that low-pressure setting to build a small, varied menu of plays, make predictions before the snap, and review what happened afterward.

What Madden can teach you about football
Madden makes parts of football strategy visible and interactive. You can select formations and plays, look at the pre-snap arrangement, change certain assignments, and watch the result. That creates a useful learning loop: notice a situation, predict what a call is designed to accomplish, run it, and compare the result with your expectation.

The game is especially useful for learning to recognize broad ideas: a run aimed inside or outside, a quick pass, a route intended to reach the middle or sideline, a deep attempt, or an answer to pressure. It can also help you see that play calling is situational. A play that makes sense when you need a short gain may not be the right choice for a deep attempt or a red-zone opportunity.

There are two different goals to keep in view:
- Learning Madden: understanding its controls, menus, playbook system, and the effects of in-game adjustments.
- Learning football: understanding recognizable strategic ideas that make sense beyond the game, such as where a play seeks space and what a defense might do to disrupt it.
Those goals overlap, but they are not identical. A Madden play call or adjustment should not be assumed to match an NFL team’s terminology, assignment rules, communication, or coaching process exactly. EA describes its playbooks as reflecting real-life strategies, strengths, and playing styles; that is a product design description, not independent proof that every simulated detail transfers directly to real football.
Choose a playbook for learning, not just for winning
EA says there is no single best Madden NFL 27 playbook for every player. The right fit depends on your roster, mode, and preferred style. For a learner, the most important question is whether a playbook gives you a manageable way to explore different situations and concepts.
Start with a few formations you can recognize and return to. A smaller set of familiar formations is often easier to study than a large collection of calls you have not learned. Familiarity lets you focus on what changes from play to play: the intended target, the likely space, and the adjustment you are considering.
When comparing playbooks, use these criteria rather than looking only for a supposedly universal “best” option:
- Roster fit: Does the playbook offer calls that make use of the strengths and abilities of your team’s players?
- Situation coverage: Can you find options for inside and outside runs, short yardage, passes to the middle and sideline, a deep attempt, the red zone, and a response to a blitz?
- Concept variety: Does it let you examine different formations and strategic ideas, or do you keep returning to one favorite call?
- Practice value: Can you repeat plays and work on audibles and hot routes from formations you recognize?
For a first pass, choose a playbook that covers the situations you want to study and has enough familiar formations to keep practice focused. You can explore other playbooks later, once you have a point of comparison.

Set up a low-pressure practice session
Use Team Practice to test a playbook before taking it into a more competitive or consequential mode. EA specifically recommends trying a playbook in practice before using it in modes such as Franchise or Madden Ultimate Team. Practice gives you room to repeat calls and examine adjustments without making every snap about winning.
In Madden NFL 27, EA says playbooks can be customized in Play Now, Franchise, Madden Ultimate Team, Team Practice, and Online H2H. Superstar does not support playbook customization. These options describe where customization is available; exact menus and steps can vary by mode or change with an update, so use the current in-game interface rather than relying on a button sequence from another edition.

If you switch formations and objectives on every snap, it becomes harder to tell what caused a result. Keep a simple note of the situation, the play’s purpose as you understand it, the change you made, and what happened. The point is not to record a perfect scouting report; it is to make your reasoning visible enough to improve it.
Build a small menu for different situations
EA’s Madden NFL 27 practice guidance recommends finding calls for a range of situations. Assemble a compact menu with at least one option for each of the following:
- An inside run
- An outside run
- A quick pass for short yardage
- A pass aimed at the middle of the field
- A pass aimed toward the sideline
- A deep shot
- A red-zone play
- A play to use against a blitz
This is a study list, not a claim that one specific play is always the right answer. The purpose is to learn how the intended objective changes with the situation. For each call, note what you think the offense is trying to accomplish and what might make the play difficult. Then practice it more than once so you can distinguish a concept from a single outcome.

When a play does not work, do not immediately conclude that the concept is useless. Ask what happened: Did the defense appear to take away the space you expected? Did a defender disrupt the action? Was the play aimed at the wrong situation? Did an adjustment change the original purpose? The game’s result gives you something to examine, not a complete explanation by itself.

For every call, work through the same sequence. Consistency helps you learn why you chose a play rather than simply memorizing which calls happened to succeed.
- Read the situation. Before choosing a play, identify what kind of opportunity you are trying to handle: a run, a short pass, a middle or sideline throw, a deep attempt, a red-zone chance, or pressure from a blitz.
- Look at the formation. Ask what the alignment suggests about the play’s purpose. Treat this as a hypothesis, not a guarantee of what the game will do.
- Predict the challenge. Identify the defender or defensive response you think could disrupt the call. State what you expect before the snap so you can compare your idea with what follows.
- Run the play without changing it. First learn what the original call appears to be designed to do. Repeating it helps establish a baseline for the adjustments you will test later.
- Review the result. Compare the outcome with your prediction. Ask what space the play sought, what the defense appeared to take away, and whether the result matched the call’s intended objective.
- Change one thing at a time. Once you understand the baseline, test an audible or hot route from a familiar formation. Notice how the change alters the purpose of the play and what response it invites.
This routine is a practical way to study the game, not a teaching curriculum validated by EA or a controlled measure of learning gains. It keeps attention on decision-making rather than on chasing a single successful result.
Use CoachSpeak Preplay as a prompt
EA describes CoachSpeak Preplay in Madden NFL 27 as offering coach recommendations before the snap. EA said more than 50 gameplay scenarios were supported at launch. Treat the recommendation as a prompt for your own reasoning, not an answer to memorize.
Before accepting a suggestion, ask why it might fit the situation. What problem does the recommendation appear to address? What might happen if the defense responds differently than you expect? After the snap, compare the result with your explanation. If you cannot explain the suggestion, pause and examine the play rather than treating the prompt as proof that the call is universally correct.

The scenario count is EA’s launch description; it is not a measure of how much a player will learn, and feature details can change with game updates. The useful habit is the reasoning step: explain why a suggested call might fit, then examine what happened.
Practice audibles and hot routes from familiar formations
Once you can recognize a formation and its basic calls, rehearse audibles and hot routes from formations you already know. EA’s practice guidance specifically recommends working on those adjustments from favorite formations.
Keep the exercise narrow. Start with a play whose purpose you can describe, make one adjustment, and then explain what you expect the changed play to do. Consider whether the adjustment preserves the original objective or changes it. After running the play, check whether the result supports your prediction. This makes adjustments part of the lesson rather than a collection of commands to copy.
Do not assume an in-game change is equivalent to a real team’s system. Madden represents football through its own controls and playbook mechanics. If your goal is to understand real strategy, label what you learned as an in-game mechanic when it depends on Madden’s interface, and as a broader football idea when it concerns a general concept such as creating space or responding to pressure.
Connect the game to explanations outside Madden
NFL.com has reported on former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert using Madden as a visual aid to explain basic football concepts, including how the pre-snap display can make assignments visible. That is a reported example of how the game can help illustrate ideas; it is not evidence that playing Madden alone produces transferable expertise. NFL.com also quoted EA representative Andrew Oldenburg saying coaches had used Madden tools in practice. Those accounts show examples of use, not controlled measurements of learning effectiveness.

To make an in-game lesson more useful away from the game, explain it in plain language without relying on Madden’s menus or button names. Describe the situation, the play’s intended purpose, the space it seeks, and the response you think the defense may make. Then check that explanation against a football explanation from a reliable source. If the lesson only makes sense as a Madden control or a feature of its playbook system, keep it in the “learning Madden” category.
Common learning mistakes and how to correct them
Memorizing a winning call
A successful play does not automatically teach you why it worked or when to use it again. Return to the situation and purpose: what was the call trying to do, and what did the defense allow? Practice the concept in more than one situation before treating it as a reliable answer.
Changing several things at once
If you switch the formation, call, and pre-snap adjustments together, it is difficult to identify which change mattered. Establish what the original play does, then test a single adjustment from a familiar formation.

Treating a prompt as a rule
CoachSpeak Preplay recommendations can give you a reason to think about a situation, but they do not replace understanding the situation yourself. Explain the suggestion in your own words and compare that explanation with the outcome.
Confusing simulation with real-world instruction
The game can help make strategic ideas visible, but its controls, terminology, and playbook system belong to the simulation. Do not infer that a particular call or assignment transfers exactly to an NFL team’s system without an independent source that establishes the connection.
Practicing only one kind of play
A favorite call may be comfortable but leave gaps in your understanding. Use the situation menu to study runs, short-yardage passes, throws to different areas, a deep attempt, red-zone play, and an answer to a blitz.
What Madden cannot establish on its own
The available accounts support describing Madden as a visual, interactive aid for examining formations, calls, and pre-snap changes. They do not establish that the game alone teaches complete real-world football knowledge, coaching skill, or the exact terminology and assignments used by an NFL team. EA’s descriptions of authenticity and real-life strategic influences explain design aims; they are not independent validation of every simulated detail.
