Players struggled to sign in to Destiny 2 when The Final Shape launched on June 4, 2024, as planned maintenance continued and Bungie later reported failures in network load-balancer machines. Bungie said it routed traffic around the affected machines and partially mitigated the sign-on issue within two hours of launch. This is a historical account, not a statement about the game’s live server status today.
What happened during The Final Shape launch?
Bungie warned players ahead of launch that access could be delayed. Its June 2 maintenance notice said work for The Final Shape and Update 8.0.0.1 would begin June 3 at 9 a.m. PDT. Players were expected to be able to log in around 10 a.m. PDT on June 4, while maintenance was expected to finish around noon. Bungie cautioned that players returning during background maintenance might face a queue or sign-on issues. Bungie’s maintenance timeline

The expansion’s June 4 reopening did not guarantee immediate or trouble-free access. In a stability update published June 5, Bungie attributed launch-related sign-on failures to problems with load-balancer machines. Bungie said it routed traffic around those machines and partially mitigated the issue within two hours of launch. That is Bungie’s explanation; the cited sources do not provide an independent engineering assessment. Bungie’s stability update
Was it a queue, a server-side failure, or a local connection problem?
Those symptoms can overlap, but they point to different causes and next steps. A queue is an intentional way to regulate how many players enter the game; it does not by itself mean a player’s connection is broken. Bungie says queue duration varies with traffic and concurrent population. If a player disconnects or is removed from the queue, their place is not retained. Reaching the front without successfully connecting also means re-entering the queue. Bungie’s queue guidance

| What you experience | What it may indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A queue or a message that sign-on is delayed during scheduled work | Planned maintenance or high player traffic; Bungie warned this could happen during the launch window. | Check Bungie’s service and maintenance updates. If removed from the queue, expect to join again. |
| Sign-on failures during the June 4, 2024 launch | Bungie reported failures in load-balancer machines and said it partially mitigated them by routing traffic around those machines. | Wait for Bungie’s service updates; local network steps would not repair the reported server-side failure. |
| Connectivity trouble outside a known service incident or maintenance window | A separate local connection, console cache, or update issue may be involved. | Use Bungie’s current status guidance and applicable network troubleshooting steps. |
What changed after launch?
In its June 5 Day 2 update, Bungie said it had resolved several critical stability issues and reduced “Kick to Orbit” errors. It also said it was monitoring player population and increasing server capacity, while warning that queues could still occur as the population rose. Bungie’s Day 2 stability update
What should players check during a current login problem?
The 2024 launch incident should not be treated as evidence of a present-day outage. For a problem happening now, check Bungie’s server and update status guidance for current service information. If no service issue or planned maintenance is indicated, Bungie’s general guidance includes clearing a console cache, power-cycling network equipment, and consulting its network troubleshooting guide. These steps address possible local connectivity symptoms, not the load-balancer failures Bungie reported in 2024.
