What did reviewers praise?
A focused, character-driven campaign
In a review dated June 17, 2024, GameSpot’s Phil Hornshaw praised the campaign’s clearer stakes and attention to its characters. He wrote, “With a character-driven story and a focus on enhancing its gameplay on nearly every level, The Final Shape feels like what Destiny 2 has been trying to be all along.”

New combat and build options
The review singled out the Dread, a new enemy faction, for adding challenge to encounters. It also praised Prismatic, which combines abilities from existing subclasses and broadens the options available for building a character. These additions help explain why the positive assessment covers gameplay as well as narrative.

What was the main criticism?
GameSpot’s caveat was spatial: some campaign arenas feel small and cramped. That can work against Destiny 2’s movement-oriented combat by limiting the room players have to maneuver. This is a specific criticism in one detailed review, not evidence that all reviewers shared the same complaint.
Is The Final Shape a standalone game?
No. Epic Games Store lists The Final Shape as a Destiny 2 add-on developed and published by Bungie, with a release date of June 4, 2024. It is an expansion, not a separate standalone title.
