When Sims 4 mods or custom content (CC) vanish, the usual causes are a disabled setting, files stored in a folder the game is not reading, or a patch that broke compatibility. Check those three before you reinstall anything or assume files were deleted. Protect your Saves folder before you test any fix.
Players describe the problem in several ways: mods that no longer appear in the game, missing hair or clothing on Sims, or “CC won’t load after latest update.” The steps below work through each cause in the order that tends to resolve it fastest.

Start with the in-game custom content switches
Sims 4 ships with mods and CC disabled by default. After an update or a settings reset, the switches can end up off even though your files are still in place. The EA Forums community guide “[INFO] How to Use Mods and CC” states: “To enable the game to see your mods and CC, from the Main Menu, go to Game Options > Other and select ‘Enable Custom Content and Mods’.” That is community guidance from the forum, not a statement from a named EA staff member.
- From the main menu, open Game Options > Other.
- Turn on Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- If any missing items are script mods, also turn on Script Mods Allowed.
- Apply the settings, then fully close and restart The Sims 4.
If these switches keep turning themselves off after restarts, security software may be interfering with the game’s user folder. Check your antivirus or ransomware-protection settings for exclusions before you assume the files themselves are the problem.

Confirm the game is reading the correct folder
The game only loads files from the Sims 4 user folder it is actively using. The EA Forums guide identifies the Mods folder as Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. If your files are anywhere else, the game will not see them, even if they are intact.
Two details commonly cause confusion:
- EA’s Windows-specific missing-user-content article warns that the active Sims 4 user folder can change without notice and may sit in a different location than you expect. Check whether your Documents folder is redirected to OneDrive or another cloud location, since that changes where the game looks.
- That article’s folder steps apply to Windows only. Mac players should look for EA’s Mac-specific guidance before moving files, rather than applying the Windows paths directly.
Check extraction, file type, and folder depth
A download in ZIP, RAR, or 7Z format is only an archive. The game reads the extracted files, so the archive itself will not load. Extract each download and place the resulting files in the Mods folder.

Folder depth also matters, and the limits differ by file type:
- Script mods (.ts4script files): must sit no more than one folder deep inside Mods.
- Package-only CC (.package files): can be nested up to five folders deep, according to the EA Forums guide.
- Nested Mods folders: avoid a second folder named Mods inside Mods, which is a common result of unpacking an archive that already contains a Mods folder.
Check whether a game update broke compatibility
If mods stopped working right after a patch, the update is the most likely trigger. A 2026 update was reported in EA Forums threads to have prevented some pack-specific custom content from fully loading, and in turn caused other CC not to load at all. An EA forum post said a later update resolved that issue and told players to fully update the game. That report describes a past issue. It does not establish that the same problem applies today, so check current status before drawing conclusions.

To confirm where a given mod stands:
- Read the current EA Forums broken and updated Mods thread for the status of specific content.
- Check the creator’s own page or update notes, since compatibility changes with each patch and creators often release new versions.
- If a mod is listed as broken, remove it or install the updated version rather than repeatedly re-enabling the old file.
Other causes can look identical in game. Missing dependencies, duplicate files, conflicting mods, or a required game pack that you do not own can each stop content from appearing. Sims 4 Studio is a third-party tool that the EA Forums guide mentions for batch-fixing some broken CC; whether it is appropriate for your files depends on the specific item, and the guide does not establish a general fix.
Clear the cache and protect your saves before testing
After you add, replace, or delete custom content, the game can keep using cached data. The EA Forums guide says the game may not recognize removed CC while the cache file remains. Clear it as follows:

- In your Sims 4 user folder, delete the file localthumbcache.package.
- Restart the game and check whether the content now appears.
Before you test any change, make a separate copy of your Saves folder somewhere outside the game folder. Testing can alter a save, and an external copy is the only dependable recovery point if a household or lot loads incorrectly.
If a save opens without its expected CC, exit without saving. If you already saved in that state, the EA Forums guide describes using Load Game and choosing an earlier save from the game’s backups. The guide says the game keeps five backup saves, so an earlier recovery point may exist if you have not saved many times since the problem began.

If the files are actually gone
“Not visible in game” and “missing from disk” are different problems. Enabling mods cannot restore a file that is no longer on your computer.
EA’s Windows guide lists these possible causes of missing user content:
- Cloud-storage sync that moved, renamed, or removed files
- User error, such as accidental deletion or moving files to the wrong folder
- Renamed files that the game can no longer read
- Corrupted or incomplete downloads
- The game reading a different active user folder
EA states that it does not support cloud storage for saves and other user data, and it cannot retrieve saves from its servers. If the files are gone, your recovery options are a separate backup, a re-download from the original creator, or the earlier save backups described above.

Keep an external copy of your Saves folder on a separate drive or cloud service you control. The EA Forums guide recommends an outside backup. That protects your save progress, but it does not repair disabled, misplaced, or incompatible mods.
