Rubber-banding, unstable ping, or players appearing to warp point toward a network connection problem; choppy animation or brief freezes may be visual stutter instead; delayed aiming or button response may involve the controller-to-display path. Start by identifying which symptom you have, then try these nine low-risk checks in order. None is a guaranteed fix for every cause.
What kind of lag are you seeing?
In online play, the game sends your actions to a server, which processes them and sends updated game state back to your console. Activision explains that higher network latency increases that delay; high ping can contribute to players warping or shots seeming to miss. Activision Research also says its netcode aims to reduce the perceived impact of latency, but cannot eliminate it. Its 2024 example contrasts 200 milliseconds—which it says would be tolerable in a turn-based game but a poor experience in Call of Duty—with no universal target for every MWII session. Activision Research’s latency explanation.
- Likely network symptoms: actions feel delayed, ping fluctuates, or players snap or warp across the screen.
- Possible visual-performance symptoms: animation stutters or the game briefly freezes without matching network symptoms. The official guidance cited here does not establish a PS5-specific fix for every such case.
- Possible input/display symptoms: aiming or button response feels delayed. That can involve more than the internet connection; the sources cited here do not verify a MWII-specific PS5 display-setting fix.
If only MWII is affected, compare what happens in another online game and check the service-status pages before changing router settings. That comparison can help distinguish a game-specific or service issue from a broader connection problem, but it does not identify the cause by itself.
Try these 9 checks for MW2 lag on PS5
1. Check PlayStation Network and Call of Duty service status
Before troubleshooting your home network, look for a PlayStation Network alert or a Call of Duty service issue. Activision recommends checking platform status for alerts, maintenance, or other operational factors when connection problems occur. If a service is disrupted, changing your Wi-Fi or router settings is unlikely to address the underlying issue. Activision’s connection troubleshooting guide.

2. Test the PS5’s internet connection
On PS5, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. If the test reports a connection failure, use its displayed error as a clue and follow the relevant guidance; a headline download-speed number alone does not show whether your connection is stable during a match. Activision specifically recommends running the console’s connection test for connection trouble. Activision’s connection troubleshooting guide.
3. Restart the PS5
Restart the console, then reconnect and test MWII again. Sony lists restarting the PS5 as the first step for its NW-102468-1 network connection error. That makes it a reasonable basic check, not a universal cure for game stutter or latency. PlayStation’s NW-102468-1 guidance.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
4. Restart the router
Restarting the router can clear a temporary connectivity problem. For the network error covered in Sony’s guidance, the recommended sequence is to turn the router off, wait at least five minutes, then turn it back on. Wait for the connection to return before testing MWII. Activision’s connection troubleshooting guide also recommends a router restart as a basic connectivity step.
5. Pause downloads and other heavy network activity
Pause large downloads and, if practical, streaming music or video on devices sharing the connection. Activision notes that streaming and downloads on the network can be detrimental to connection ability. Test a match after pausing them to see whether the symptom changes. Activision’s connection troubleshooting guide.

6. Improve the PS5’s Wi-Fi path
If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, try moving it closer to the router and reducing obstructions between them. Sony recommends both checks in its network-error guidance. Treat this as a comparison: if the connection becomes more stable, the local wireless path may be contributing. Selecting a particular Wi-Fi band is not established by the sources cited here as a universal MWII fix. PlayStation’s NW-102468-1 guidance.
7. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If possible, connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable and test the same game mode. Sony recommends trying a wired connection where possible. If the symptom improves, that supports investigating Wi-Fi coverage or local wireless conditions; it does not prove that a cable will resolve server distance, server load, or every cause of latency. A standard Ethernet cable is enough for this diagnostic comparison; a premium cable or gaming router is not established as necessary. PlayStation’s NW-102468-1 guidance.

8. Check whether your setup has multiple NAT routers
Sony advises removing multiple NAT routers in the network setup it addresses. If you are unsure whether your modem, router, or other networking equipment creates multiple NAT layers, ask your internet provider or network administrator before changing the setup. Avoid disconnecting or reconfiguring equipment blindly. PlayStation’s NW-102468-1 guidance.
9. Try Activision’s router tests only after the basic checks
Activision describes two alternative router configurations to test—not settings to turn on together. Router menus vary, and an incorrect change can affect other devices, so use your router’s instructions or contact your provider if you are unsure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether a check helped
Compare the same kind of symptom before and after each change: ping stability, rubber-banding, delayed actions, or visual stutter. Keep track of what you changed and test one change at a time where practical. A wired-versus-Wi-Fi comparison is especially useful for checking whether the local wireless path may be involved; a speed result by itself does not establish what is causing in-game lag. The official guidance reviewed here does not set a numeric speed or ping threshold for MWII on PS5.
Is PS5 lag a tracked MWII issue?
Activision’s MWII known-issues page dated February 27, 2026 listed several tracked issues, including a campaign “Kipling” error under investigation, PS5/PS4 disc-installation issues, PC performance loss, and a PS4 DLC message. PS5 lag was not listed in that dated tracker. That snapshot does not rule out an unlisted issue, a later change, or a problem affecting an individual player. Activision’s MWII known-issues page.
When the problem does not look like network lag
If PS5 connection checks are normal and MWII shows no matching ping or connection symptoms, repeated router changes may not help. Choppy animation, brief freezes, or delayed controls can have causes outside network latency. The official sources cited here do not provide a verified PS5-specific graphics checklist or a confirmed display-setting fix for MWII, so do not treat DNS changes, buying a gaming router, or an unverified toggle as a proven solution. For game-specific help, consult the official Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II product and support information.
