Yawgmoth’s Bargain is banned in Commander, and the Commander Rules Committee has published a card-specific reason for that. The card is also banned in Legacy under Wizards of the Coast’s tournament rules, but the sources available for this article do not explain why. It is not on Vintage’s banned or restricted lists. Which answer applies depends on the format you mean, so the sections below take each one separately.
Why Commander banned it
The Official Commander Website’s banned list records Yawgmoth’s Bargain as first printed in June 1999 and banned in Commander in May 2006. Its stated reasoning is specific to the format’s rules and starting life totals:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
“Yawgmoth’s Bargain abuses Commander’s higher life totals, making the life payment essentially trivial. It too easily allows for access to a large portion of one’s deck, without having to guess how far you need to go, and leaves the mana up for casting the cards drawn right away.”

Breaking that down, the card’s ability costs one life per activation and puts the top card of the controller’s library into their hand. In a format where players start at 40 life rather than the 20 used in most constructed play, paying one life repeatedly costs little. The player can keep activating until they reach the cards they need, rather than deciding in advance how deep to dig. Because the cards drawn can be cast with the mana still available, the card does not just dig; it digs and deploys in the same turn. The Commander entry attributes this rationale to the banned-list page itself and does not name an individual author.

The reasoning is about the interaction between one life and a 40-life total. It is not a claim that the card is unplayable in every format, and it does not transfer automatically to other formats.
Legacy and Vintage status
Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Tournament Rules, dated September 23, 2024, list Yawgmoth’s Bargain as banned in Legacy. The same document does not place the card on the Vintage banned list or the Vintage restricted list. Because these rules carry a 2024 date, the table below describes the status recorded in that edition. Check the current edition of the tournament rules before relying on it for a sanctioned event.

| Format | Status recorded | Source and date | Stated reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commander | Banned (May 2006) | Official Commander Website banned list | Higher life totals make the life payment trivial and allow broad deck access with mana left open |
| Legacy | Banned | Magic Tournament Rules, September 23, 2024 | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Vintage | Not on the banned or restricted lists | Magic Tournament Rules, September 23, 2024 | Not applicable |
The Legacy and Vintage rows are different authorities, so the absence of a restriction in Vintage does not contradict the Legacy ban. Each format decides its own list.
What is not established
The original Developer announcement that first banned the card in a tournament setting, and the reasoning it gave at that time, are not documented in the sources available for this article. Readers who see the Commander explanation quoted as “the reason Yawgmoth’s Bargain was banned” should know it applies to Commander. It should not be presented as the historical rationale for every ban.

Wizards’ general approach to bans
Wizards’ 2003 “Banned on the Run” article by Mark Rosewater describes the company’s general philosophy for banning and restricting cards:
“We ban and restrict cards because we believe there is something worse than not allowing players to use a particular card, and that is having a play environment become so degenerate that the game is no longer fun.”

That article explains policy, including why Vintage uses restrictions and other formats use bans. It does not discuss Yawgmoth’s Bargain, so it should be read as context for the decisions above, not as an explanation of them.

- If you are asking about Commander, the answer is the higher-life-total interaction described above, with a May 2006 ban date.
- If you are asking about Legacy, the card is banned in the September 2024 rules, and the sources reviewed do not give a reason.
- If you are asking about Vintage, the card is not restricted in that same 2024 document.
- If you are asking about the original tournament ban, the documented history is incomplete.
No published statistic on how often the card was played or how much it affected results was identified in the sources, so this article does not offer one.
