Most of the time, Sims 4 mods have not been deleted. After a game update, the game often switches off the Custom Content and Mods setting as a precaution, so mods look gone even though their files are still on your computer. If the files are present, you can usually bring them back by checking compatibility and re-enabling the setting. If the files really are missing, or the game cannot see them, the cause is a different one: the game is reading a different user folder, a cloud-sync service has moved or restored files, or security software has quarantined them.
The sections below separate these possibilities so you can tell which one applies to your installation before you download or reinstall anything.

Three situations that look the same from the menu
When mods stop appearing, the symptom is usually the same: the mod is not loaded and may not show up in the game. The underlying situation can differ, and each one needs a different fix.

A disabled setting does not mean the files were deleted, and a missing file does not mean the setting was changed. Confirm which situation you are in before making changes.

Why an update can switch mods off
Electronic Arts states that it disables mods during updates to limit gameplay problems, because a mod that worked before a patch can become problematic afterwards. Mod creators may also need time to publish updated versions. The result is that the game can appear to remove mods when it has only turned off the setting that loads them. The official explanation is in EA’s help article on mods and game updates.
This behaviour is documented, but it does not happen to every player after every patch. Whether it affects you depends on the update you installed and which mods you use. If you installed an update and the mods vanished at the same time, the update is the most likely trigger to check first.

Check whether the files still exist
Before you change any settings, find out whether the mod files are still on disk. This single check separates the two most common cases.
- Default location:
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. Look for the mod files you installed. - Files present: The problem is most likely the enable setting or compatibility. Continue with the troubleshooting sequence.
- Files absent: Confirm that you are looking at the folder the game is actually using. Documents folders can be redirected to another drive or to a cloud service such as OneDrive, which changes the real path. The community guide on the EA Forums notes that sync services can complicate mod installation.
- Files moved or quarantined: Check your cloud-sync service’s recovery or version history, and review your security software’s quarantine or blocked-items list. Antivirus and security settings are also a common reason mod settings will not stay enabled.
Only download replacements after you have checked these locations. Re-downloading a mod into the wrong folder can leave you with two copies, and duplicate versions can cause loading problems of their own.

Troubleshooting sequence
Work through these steps in order. Stop as soon as the game behaves normally.
- Protect your save first. If a save depends on mods or custom content, do not save while those items are disabled. EA warns that choosing Save and Exit before re-enabling Custom Content and Mods may remove that content from the saved game. When you test with mods off, exit without saving.
- Test the unmodded game. Load Live Mode with mods disabled to confirm that the base game runs correctly. Exit without saving.
- Check the creator’s current instructions. Confirm that the mod’s listed compatibility matches your current game version. Replace outdated files exactly as the creator directs. EA notes that some mods may need a full reinstall after a patch.
- Re-enable the setting. Go to
Game Options > Other, turn on Custom Content and Mods, then exit and relaunch the game. - Test a short session. Load a save that worked before and check that your mods appear and behave as expected.
- Isolate a bad mod if the problem returns. Use the batch method described below.
Isolating a problem mod
EA’s guidance for finding a troublesome mod is to add mods back in batches and watch for the issue to return. When a batch brings it back, split that batch in half and repeat until you find the file responsible.

- Test gameplay mods before custom content. EA recommends removing gameplay mods first because they are more likely to cause problems.
- Keep a note of each batch you add, so you can reverse the process if a test fails.
- Script mods should sit no more than one folder deep inside the Mods folder, and you should not keep two versions of the same mod. Both are listed as common causes in the EA Forums guide.
Back up your saves before you update
The community guide recommends copying your Saves folder somewhere else before you update the game or add new content. The saves are normally in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Saves, though the exact Documents path can differ if the folder has been redirected.
A backup protects your saves. It does not restore missing mods, so keep your mod files backed up separately if you cannot afford to re-download them.

The March 2026 crash fix and what it does not explain
On 23 March 2026, EA published an update note that included a fix for a launch crash affecting 2% of players using specific types of custom content, under certain circumstances. That is a bounded statement about one crash on launch. It does not say that all missing or disabled mods have the same cause, and it does not give a broader count of affected players. If your problem is different, the troubleshooting steps above still apply.
The single user report on the EA Forums describing mods no longer recognised after an update is one player’s experience, not evidence of a universal bug. Treat it as a reason to check your own files, not as a diagnosis.
