Nintendo’s 1991 announcement of a separate CD-ROM partnership with Philips made the conflict public, but the relationship did not end in one clean break: a 1992 report described another Sony-Nintendo agreement while Nintendo also continued Philips-related work.
What were Sony and Nintendo trying to build?
Sony’s corporate history says the companies began discussions after Nintendo started developing a next-generation Super Nintendo. Sony saw an opportunity to bring its CD-ROM technology to Nintendo’s cartridge-based console. In early 1990, they finalized a joint-development contract for an integrated Super NES CD-ROM system, tentatively named PlayStation. That proposed machine was not the later Sony PlayStation console, and the joint project did not come to fruition. Sony’s corporate history
Why did the collaboration unravel?
The central dispute, as former Sony executive Ken Kutaragi later described it, was about the direction and control of the platform. Sony hoped to evolve the games industry; Nintendo wanted to retain a measure of control. His account identifies the broad tension, but it does not disclose the contract’s exact terms or establish every internal motive. The Verge’s 2019 oral history
That distinction matters: the available accounts support a control disagreement, but not a detailed claim about royalties, software rights, or which company was responsible for every part of the proposed system. Those specifics should not be treated as settled facts.

How did the split become public?
At the June 1991 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony presented its PlayStation plans. Hours later, Nintendo announced a CD-ROM partnership with Philips, according to participants interviewed in the 2019 oral history. The contrasting announcements made the strain between the companies visible and are the source of the familiar story that Nintendo abruptly abandoned Sony.
Did Sony and Nintendo end the relationship immediately?
No. The public announcements did not amount to a simple, instantaneous termination. A Reuters report published by The Washington Post on October 13, 1992, said the companies had announced a further agreement under which Sony would make and market a CD-ROM system combining the Super NES and a CD-ROM drive. The same report said Nintendo would make and market an SNES CD accessory and continue working with Philips on a bridge format. Reuters report via The Washington Post

This report complicates the simplified version of events in which Nintendo’s Philips announcement instantly ended all Sony-Nintendo cooperation. It documents what the companies announced at the time; it does not establish that the original integrated system was ultimately completed or released.

Sony’s corporate history says Kutaragi urged the company to pursue its own console and format separately from Nintendo. At a 1992 management discussion, he argued that Sony could build on a graphics system the company had developed independently. Sony president Norio Ohga backed the effort, reportedly answering, “Do it!” Sony’s corporate history
