Fall Guys was not sold on its own. On March 2, 2021, Epic Games announced that Tonic Games Group, the company behind Fall Guys, was joining Epic. Mediatonic, the game’s developer, published a parallel announcement and FAQ saying the move would accelerate its plans for the game. Mediatonic’s stated reasons were shared goals, the resources it expected from Epic, and a chance to improve the game and reach more players. Epic framed the deal around creative talent and its own interest in connected experiences and the metaverse. Neither announcement disclosed a price or detailed transaction terms.
What was announced in March 2021
Two announcements were published on the same day. Epic’s release, titled “Tonic Games Group, Makers of ‘Fall Guys’, Joins Epic Games,” described the company that owns the game joining Epic. Mediatonic’s “Mediatonic Joins the Epic Games Family” covered the same move from the studio’s side and answered questions in an FAQ. Because the announcements concern Tonic Games Group rather than a standalone game sale, the accurate framing is that the studio and its portfolio joined Epic.

Mediatonic said Fall Guys had broken out the previous August, and that its team had grown from 35 to 150+ people. That headcount is the company’s own figure, not an independently verified one, and Mediatonic presented it as context for how much further it wanted to take the game.
Why Mediatonic said it chose Epic
Asked “Why did you choose Epic?”, Mediatonic’s FAQ said the two companies had been fans of each other’s work and, after getting to know one another, found they shared many goals. The studio said Epic loved Fall Guys and its team and expected Epic’s resources to help take the game further. In practice, Mediatonic named three expected benefits:

Mediatonic also pointed to features it admired in Fortnite and Rocket League and wanted to bring to Fall Guys: account systems, cross-play, and squad-versus-squad modes.
Tonic Games Group’s leadership made similar points in the joint release. Co-founder and Chief Games Officer Paul Croft said, “Beyond the shared vision among our teams, we see tremendous potential in combining forces with Epic.” Co-founder and CEO Dave Bailey said, “With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us.”
Epic’s stated reason
Epic’s explanation focused on its own strategy rather than on Fall Guys specifically. Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney wrote that “it’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal,” and that Epic “need[s] great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.” Those are Epic’s words about its interests. They describe why Epic wanted the team, but they do not show that the metaverse was the only reason for the transaction.

How Fall Guys’ availability changed afterward
The March 2021 FAQ described a game still sold on Steam and PlayStation, with Nintendo Switch and Xbox releases still being planned. On free-to-play, Mediatonic said it had “Nothing to announce right now!” The table below tracks what the sources say about each platform over time.

The June 21, 2022 announcement also said crossplay and cross-progression were powered by Epic Online Services. That later expansion fits the stated goal of reaching more players, though the public sources do not show that every later change was already settled when the 2021 deal was announced.
As of the Epic Games Store listing checked in October 2026, Fall Guys is listed as a free, cross-platform multiplayer party game, with Mediatonic as developer, Epic Games as publisher, and in-game purchases. Storefront details can change, so check the listing for current terms.

What the announcements do not say
The March 2021 announcements do not state a sale price, a valuation, or detailed transaction terms. They also do not disclose the private financial motivations of either party. Nothing in the cited sources supports describing the move as a response to financial trouble or to a specific offer. The explanation supported by the record is the strategic and creative rationale each side gave publicly, with the financial terms undisclosed.

The Epic Games Store listing for Fall Guys is the most current primary reference for the game’s storefront status. The 2021 and 2022 announcements are the primary references for the deal and the platform changes.
