EA said it was ending regular Star Wars Battlefront II content updates because the game’s planned vision was complete. The transition followed the April 2020 release of The Battle on Scarif, after EA said the game had received 25 free content updates over more than two years. EA did not announce that the game itself was shutting down.
What EA announced in April 2020
On April 28, 2020, EA Creative Director Dennis Brännvall published an official community announcement titled “After 2+ Years of Free Content, the Vision for Star Wars Battlefront II is Now Complete.” EA described The Battle on Scarif as the next content update and the final step in completing the game’s announced vision. The update was planned for April 29.

EA counted 25 free content updates across more than two years of support. Those figures are EA’s own description of its update program, not an independent count. Read EA’s announcement.
Regular updates ended; ongoing support was a separate matter
EA said it was “moving away from delivering regular content updates.” In the same announcement, it said servers, in-game challenges, recurring events such as Double XP, and game support would continue to carry the experience forward. In other words, EA announced an end to the regular release of new content, not an immediate server shutdown.

That statement describes EA’s plan in 2020; it does not establish which services are available today. The official Battlefront news listing provides EA’s news and announcement archive.
What EA did not say about the decision
EA’s announcement gave a public rationale—completion of the game’s planned vision after the Scarif update—but did not explain the internal decision in detail. It did not identify low player numbers, a budget cut, staff reassignment, or another project taking priority as the cause. Without separate direct evidence, those explanations should be treated as speculation rather than established fact.
