Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your Xbox headset lets you hear other players but they cannot hear you, start with the headset’s mute control and connection, then check whether the problem is limited to one chat or device. Account communication permissions can also prevent voice chat. Work through the checks below before deciding the headset needs replacing.
Check the headset’s mute control and connection
- Turn off mute. Check the headset’s physical mute switch or button and, if it has a boom microphone, make sure the boom is positioned for talking. Some headsets mute when the boom is raised.
- Reconnect the headset. For a wired headset, unplug and firmly reseat its connector. For a wireless headset, confirm it is paired or connected to the Xbox as intended.
- Check whether the headset is transmitting. If the headset has a microphone indicator, see whether it shows mute or active status. Indicator behavior varies by model, so consult that headset’s instructions if needed.
Microsoft lists mute and connection among basic microphone checks for Windows; these are useful first checks, but they do not confirm Xbox-specific settings or diagnose a faulty headset. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide covers the Windows checks.
Find out where your voice stops working
Try speaking in the chat context where you noticed the problem, then compare it with another available context. For example, test Xbox party chat and a game’s voice chat separately. If you use Xbox voice features on a Windows PC, test there as a separate case.
- Only one game’s chat fails: Check that game’s voice-chat settings and whether you are muted in its chat. A failure in one context narrows the place to investigate, but does not prove the game is the cause.
- Party chat and game chat both fail on the console: Continue with account permissions and controller/headset cross-tests.
- It fails only on Windows: Check Windows microphone access, app permissions, and the selected input device rather than changing console settings.
Hearing other players does not establish that your microphone is being transmitted; listen-only audio and microphone input are separate functions.

Check Xbox communication permissions
Account privacy or communication restrictions may prevent you from speaking with other players, particularly on a family-managed account. Review the account’s communication and privacy controls, and ask the family organizer to check restrictions if they manage the account.
A Microsoft Community response has suggested checking Xbox communication settings, but its menu route is not confirmed as current official Xbox guidance. Xbox labels and navigation can change, so use current Xbox Support instructions to find the appropriate controls rather than relying on an old path.

Isolate a controller or headset connection problem
If the mute and account checks do not help, compare components where possible. These are troubleshooting tests, not guaranteed fixes:
- Try the same wired headset with another compatible controller.
- Try another compatible headset with the controller and Xbox setup that failed.
- For a wireless headset, reconnect it according to its instructions and compare it with another supported connection or device if available.
- If the headset works elsewhere but not through one controller, investigate that controller’s connection or condition. A Microsoft Community answer also suggests checking controller firmware, but that suggestion is not verified current official Xbox guidance.
Change one component at a time so you can tell whether the result follows the headset, controller, or Xbox setup.

If you are using Xbox voice features on Windows
Windows has its own microphone privacy and input controls. Microsoft’s steps differ slightly between Windows 11 and Windows 10, and desktop apps may not appear in the per-app permission list.
- Check microphone privacy. In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. In Windows 10, open Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Make sure microphone access is enabled.
- Allow app access. On the same page, enable access for the relevant app where Windows provides that control. For desktop apps, check the desktop-app access setting; individual desktop programs may not be listed separately.
- Select the intended input. Open Settings > System > Sound and select the headset microphone as the input device. Speak and check whether Windows registers input.
- Recheck the physical connection and mute. Confirm the headset is connected and its mute control is off.
Microsoft explains these permission controls in its Windows app privacy settings guidance and covers input selection and basic microphone checks in its microphone troubleshooting guide.

When to consider replacing the headset
Replacement is more reasonable when the same headset fails on more than one suitable device, while another compatible headset works with your Xbox setup. If you shop for a replacement, confirm compatibility with your specific Xbox console and connection method; compatibility can differ by model and connection type.
Xbox’s Xbox Wireless Headset product page includes a compatibility reference. The Microsoft Store listing describes pairing with Xbox consoles, PC, and phones. Check current product details and availability before buying; this is one option, not the only compatible headset.
