The controversy concerns a reported difference in promotional artwork for the optional Dispatch Art and Comics Pack: a North American Nintendo eShop banner showed characters in more covered-up poolside outfits than images on Steam and PlayStation Store. The reporting did not establish who made or approved that change.
What prompted the Dispatch artbook censorship controversy?
A Dec. 18, 2025 report by Notebookcheck, updated Oct. 5, 2026, compared the optional Art and Comics Pack’s Nintendo eShop banner with versions shown on Steam and PlayStation Store. It reported that the North American Nintendo image depicted characters in more modest poolside clothing. Some European and Australian Nintendo listings appeared unchanged.
That is evidence of a regional difference in store promotional artwork—not proof that the artbook’s pages were edited, or that Nintendo made the change. The available reporting does not identify who altered or approved the North American banner.
What is in the Dispatch Art and Comics Pack?
Nintendo UK’s listing calls the Switch DLC the Dispatch Art and Comics Pack and gives Jan. 29, 2026 as its release date. It describes two digital components:

- The Art of Dispatch: a digital artbook of “100+ pages.”
- Digital comics: four comics totaling “45+ pages.”
The listing says the text is English-only and notes that the description was provided by the publisher. Its page counts refer to the product contents, not to any censorship measure. See Nintendo UK’s listing.

Is the art-pack banner issue the same as censorship in the Switch game?
No. The banner dispute concerns what players saw in a regional store listing. The Switch game’s visual censorship was a separate issue: Nintendo Life reported that Dispatch launched on Switch and Switch 2 on Jan. 29–30, 2026, without its visual censorship toggle.
In a statement quoted by Nintendo Life, AdHoc Studio said: “Different platforms have different content criteria, and submissions are evaluated individually. For our Switch release, we worked with Nintendo to adapt certain elements so Dispatch could be on their platform.”
Nintendo’s statement, also quoted by the outlet, said: “Nintendo requires all games on its platforms to receive ratings from independent organizations and to meet our established content and platform guidelines. While we inform partners when their titles don’t meet our guidelines, Nintendo does not make changes to partner content. We also do not discuss specific content or the criteria used in making these determinations.” Read Nintendo Life’s report.

Nintendo Life reported that AdHoc’s free HR Violations Pack update, released June 17, 2026, added a Partial Coverage setting for Switch versions. It revealed some content that had previously been covered, but genital nudity and explicit audio remained censored.
AdHoc said it had selected a single Switch build to meet the strictest regional rating after learning that some censoring would be required in all regions. In its explanation, the studio said: “The short version: Approaching launch and running out of time and resources, we were surprised to learn that our game would require some level of censoring in all regions, not just the few we were already planning for. In a difficult spot, we decided to use a single Switch build that complied with Nintendo’s strictest regional rating. This led us to deliver a more censored version of Dispatch than Switch players were expecting.”

The studio also apologized for not making the difference clear enough before purchase: “The problem was we didn’t make it clear enough, before you spent your money, that the version you were buying was materially different from that game. And for that we’re truly sorry.” Nintendo Life covered the update and AdHoc’s explanation.

How does the physical Deluxe Edition differ?
The physical Deluxe Edition is a separate product announcement, not an explanation of the eShop banner. Nintendo Everything reported on Aug. 25, 2026, that a Q4 2026 Switch 2 Edition would also work on Switch 1. The reported package includes the game, digital artbook, four digital comics, a digital soundtrack code, a 16-page printed booklet and a poster. The report listed a suggested retail price of $49.99 and said Amazon preorders were open at the time. Check the current listing for release status, compatibility and price; those details may have changed. The report also cautioned that some Switch game content remains censored.
