A Discord server loses boosts when the subscriptions supplying those boosts end or stop renewing, when a boosting member moves a boost to another server, or when a boosting member leaves or is removed. A lower boost count can drop the server’s level, which costs level perks only after a grace period. Separately, the boosting member’s own boost streak can end, and that is an account-level consequence that does not depend on the server’s current count.
What causes a server’s boost count to drop
Discord’s Server Boosting FAQ and its subscription help articles name several distinct triggers. They are worth separating, because each one leaves a different trail in the settings you can check.

A boosting subscription was canceled or ended
Each Server Boost comes from a subscription held by a member. When that subscription ends, the boosts it supplied go with it. Discord also lists ended Nitro plans that included boosts among the reasons a boosting streak can be lost, so a member who stops paying for Nitro can lose boosts even if they never touched the server settings. The Server Boosting FAQ covers these streak conditions.
A renewal payment failed
A subscription is marked past due when its renewal payment fails. Discord’s past-due article, dated May 7, 2025, says the recovery window is 30 to 60 days, depending on where the subscription was purchased. If the payment is not resolved within that window, the subscription ends, and the related perks and streaks end with it. A past-due status is therefore an early warning, not a finished loss.

A member transferred a boost to another server
A member can move a boost from one server to another. The server the boost leaves can fall below a level threshold or lose the boost allocations that an additional perk depends on. Transfers are covered in more detail below, because the timing rules matter.
A member left, was removed, or the server was deleted
Discord lists both removal from a server and deletion of the boosted server as reasons a user’s boost streak can be lost. In these cases the boosts applied to that server are no longer active there, which lowers the count. The member can usually reuse the boost, but only after a waiting period described in the streak section.
An administrator reallocated the boosts
Server owners and administrators split boosts between level progression and additional perks. Moving boosts away from a level can eventually cost the server its level perks. Moving boosts away from an additional perk turns that perk off at once. This is the one cause that a server team controls directly, and it is also the one most often mistaken for a subscription problem.

Nitro was canceled, but a separate Server Boost subscription remains
Discord notes that Server Boosts can run on a separate monthly subscription from Nitro. Canceling Nitro therefore does not automatically mean every boost is gone. The Subscriptions list, not Nitro status alone, shows whether a separate boost subscription is still active.

A boost count, a server level, a set of perks, and a member’s boost streak are four different things. A change to one does not always change the others immediately, which is why a server can look unchanged for days and then lose a perk.

How to diagnose a level or perk loss
Open the Server Boosts tab as an owner or administrator. It shows the total number of boosts, the current allocations, the levels and perks, and the controls for reallocating boosts. Then work through three checks:
- Compare the current total with the requirement for the server’s current level. If the total is below it, the level is at risk or already lost.
- Check which boosts are allocated to levels and which to additional perks. A server can have boosts in total but none unallocated, because boosts were already applied to level progression. In that case a new additional perk cannot be unlocked, even though the count looks healthy.
- If an additional perk disappeared right away, look for a reallocation rather than a level change. Those perks do not wait out the grace period.
Check subscriptions and payment status first
Most boost losses that are not caused by an administrator trace back to a subscription. Work through these checks in order:
- Open User Settings > Subscriptions. Discord identifies this page as the place to manage subscriptions and view renewal dates. Confirm whether Nitro and any separate Server Boost subscription are active, past due, canceled, or close to renewal.
- If a subscription shows as past due, a renewal payment has failed. Discord’s past-due article gives a 30 to 60 day recovery period that depends on the purchase channel. The article does not list the exact window for each channel, so check the billing details on the account and the payment method on file before the window closes.
- If a Server Boost subscription was canceled, it ends at the end of the current billing period, not immediately. Discord’s cancellation guide says the cancellation must be made using the same type of device through which the subscription was purchased.
- If the boost was bought on one platform and you later moved it to another, check the streak rules below. Changing between desktop and mobile purchases can break the streak unless the boosts are reactivated in time.
Transfers, cooldowns, and the 72-hour streak window
Transfers are the cause most people miss, because the boost moves without any warning to the server it leaves.

Transfer cooldown
A boost must wait seven days after use before it can be transferred again. The server receiving the boost has to be available to the user. Moving a boost can reduce the original server’s level or available perks, so an administrator of the server it leaves may see a drop with no subscription change at all.
Reuse cooldown after leaving or being removed
When a member leaves a server or is removed from it, the same seven-day cooldown applies before that boost can be reused. The streak guide covers this case.
The 72-hour window to keep a streak
If a user stops boosting a server for one of the listed reasons, Discord gives them 72 hours to apply boosts to another server and keep the streak. The streak follows the oldest applied boosts, not simply the number of servers currently boosted. The same 72-hour window applies when boosts stop being applied to a server, and when a Nitro or boost purchase has moved between desktop and mobile and the boosts need to be reactivated manually.

Discord’s wording on the limit is direct:
“If you do not boost another server within 72 hours, you will lose your streak and our Support Team can not adjust your streak.” (Discord Support, Server Boosting FAQ)
Once the window has passed, Support cannot restore the streak, so the time to act is inside the 72 hours.

Symptoms and the most likely cause
- The level dropped but the total still looks close. Check the exact requirement for the level. The gap may be one boost, and the level perks remain during the 72-hour grace period.
- Server Tags or Enhanced Role Styles vanished at once. An administrator probably reallocated the boosts that supported them. This does not come with a grace period.
- Boosts appear available but a new additional perk cannot be added. The available boosts are allocated to level progression, so none are unallocated.
- Nitro is canceled but the server still has boosts. A separate Server Boost subscription may still be active. Check the Subscriptions list.
- Your streak reset. Look for a canceled boost plan, a removal, a deleted server, or a transfer. If the 72-hour window passed without reapplying boosts, Support cannot adjust the streak.
What Discord’s guidance does not settle
- The exact payment recovery deadline for each purchase channel is not spelled out in the available guidance. Only the 30 to 60 day range is published.
- Public help articles cannot diagnose a specific billing discrepancy. For a particular account, the Subscriptions page and Discord Support are the authoritative sources.
- Discord’s interface labels and policies can change. The paths and timings above reflect the help articles as accessed in October 2026.
