Some game ads show a real but minor minigame or a feature unlocked late; others depict mechanics or visuals that are not in the released game. Either way, a short ad can leave a very different impression from the game’s main experience. Regulators have documented individual mismatches, but the available examples do not show how common they are across Google Play or establish one universal reason developers use them.
Why an ad can feel like a different game
An ad usually has only a few seconds to communicate an appealing idea. A simple puzzle, dramatic rescue, or fast action sequence may be easier to understand at a glance than a game’s longer-running loop. That can produce a sharp mismatch in expectations, whether the advertised activity is technically present or not.

A real feature can still be unrepresentative
The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) describes a puzzle-style ad for a city-building strategy game in which the puzzles existed as supplementary minigames, while most of the game was significantly different. Its guidance warns that a feature reached only after substantial play in another style may not represent the overall experience. ASA guidance on mobile and app game ads and its 2024 explainer discuss this distinction.
Some advertised mechanics may not exist
In an ASA ruling dated 13 April 2022, an ad for Gold and Goblins showed a free-roam mining vehicle and harvesting mechanics. The game footage provided to the ASA showed goblins mining in a static mine instead. The ASA found a significant discrepancy and ruled the ad misleading under CAP Code rule 3.1. Looks and pacing matter, too
A mismatch need not be a completely invented mechanic. The ASA’s 2024 explainer also discusses ads whose graphics, locations, combat speed, or unit behavior did not accurately reflect the advertised game. It says footage from another game must not be presented as though it shows the game being promoted.
How to judge whether an ad represents the game
Compare the ad with the game along several dimensions, not just whether a similar scene appears somewhere after installation:

- Main loop or side mode: Is the activity what players do most of the time, or a supplementary minigame?
- Availability: Does it appear early, or only after substantial progress through a different kind of game?
- Playable mechanics: Can players actually control the actions shown, or are they only part of a cinematic or fabricated sequence?
- Presentation: Do the graphics, locations, speed, and behavior shown resemble the released game?
- Overall impression: Does small print genuinely clarify the ad, or contradict the strong impression created by its visuals?
The ASA says a qualification such as “Not representative of actual gameplay” is unlikely to prevent an ad from misleading consumers. A disclaimer does not necessarily outweigh the impression created by the ad itself, particularly if the advertised activity is only a limited feature reached after substantial play in a different style. The ASA’s game-ad advice explains its approach.
What the examples establish—and what they do not
Regulator rulings show that mismatches can involve a secondary mode, mechanics that are not in the game, or misleading presentation. They do not establish how often this happens among Google Play games today, nor prove a single motive shared by developers. Claims that all such ads exist for one particular business reason go beyond these examples.

A historical Australian case illustrates both why players object and why individual figures need context. In a March 2021 interim report, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) described UK ASA rulings involving two popular games, where the advertised gameplay became accessible only after significant play in a different style. For Gardenscapes, the report recorded 496,493 Australian Play Store downloads and USD 4,830,762 in Australian revenue during 2020; those are historical, country-specific figures, not current global performance.
The ACCC also counted negative Gardenscapes Play Store reviews from 1 January to 1 March 2021 that mentioned “false advertising” 57 times, “misleading” 90 times, and other concerns about advertisements 191 times. These are keyword mentions within that defined set of negative reviews—not a representative measure of player opinion or the prevalence of misleading ads. One review, dated 2 February 2021, said: “I thought this game would be a series of puzzles like all the ads I’ve been watching for the past six months, but it is just another variation of the match three games. Ok for some but not my thing. Pity the advertising was misleading.” The ACCC’s March 2021 interim report contains the case figures and quoted review.

Which rules apply?
Google Play rules, US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance, and UK ASA decisions address related issues, but they are not interchangeable. Their scope depends on the conduct and jurisdiction involved.
Google Play
Google Play’s store listing policy says app descriptions, titles, icons, screenshots, and promotional images must not be misleading, irrelevant, excessive, or inappropriate. Its ads policy also restricts deceptive ads that mimic app or system interfaces and disruptive ads that interfere with use. For example, full-screen interstitial ads that appear unexpectedly during gameplay or at the beginning of a level are prohibited; covered interstitials must be closeable after 15 seconds, with exceptions including explicitly opted-in rewarded ads and non-interruptive ads. These rules concern Play listings and ads shown in apps; they are not a guarantee that every ad served elsewhere fully represents a game.

United States: FTC
The FTC’s app-marketing guidance says claims in an app store or inside an app are advertising claims and should be truthful. Objective claims need substantiation and should be assessed from the average user’s perspective. Its native-advertising guidance adds that an ad’s format can deceive consumers even if the product claims themselves are true; where needed, a disclosure must be clear and prominent. See Marketing Your Mobile App: Get It Right from the Start and the FTC’s native advertising guidance.
United Kingdom: ASA
The ASA applies the UK CAP Code. Its guidance says game ads should reflect the product and be representative of gameplay, and footage presented as in-play footage should come from the game being advertised. Its rulings should not be treated as Google Play policy or as US law. The ASA’s mobile-game guidance sets out its position.
How to check a game before downloading
- Compare the ad with the store listing. Check the screenshots and description for evidence of the same activity, art style, and game loop.
- Watch unedited gameplay. Look for videos of people playing the released game, rather than relying on short promotional clips. The FTC specifically recommends reading reviews and watching gameplay videos when helping a child decide whether a game is a good fit. FTC consumer advice on mobile games.
- Scan reviews for recurring, specific complaints. Give more weight to repeated reports that an advertised mode is absent, rare, or unlocked only after substantial progress than to a single vague reaction.
- Ask whether the ad shows the main experience. A feature appearing once in a game does not by itself make it representative of what players will mostly do.
What to do if an ad appears misleading
Save a screenshot or other copy of the ad and note where and when it appeared. You can report it through the ad platform’s tools or the relevant advertising regulator’s complaint process. Whether a complaint leads to action depends on the ad, available evidence, audience, and applicable jurisdiction; a report does not guarantee a particular outcome. The ASA’s 2024 explainer describes its approach to mobile-game ads, while the FTC’s app guidance explains its US framework.
