Why Does Plutonium Say “Unable to Join”? Friend-Session Fixes for T6

“Unable to Join” in Plutonium T6 usually comes from friend setup, firewall blocking, host networking, or a version or mode mismatch. Here is the official order of checks.

For Plutonium T6 (Black Ops II), “Unable to Join” when you try to enter a friend’s session usually traces back to one of four things: the friend relationship or invite setup, a firewall or router blocking the game, a host who cannot accept incoming connections, or a mismatch in client version or game mode. Plutonium’s official guidance says to start with the invite flow and only then have the host forward UDP port 3074. Work through the checks in that order. Following them does not guarantee a fix for every failure, because the same message can come from different causes.

First, confirm which kind of join you are attempting

“Unable to Join” is used for more than one situation, and the fix depends on the path. The steps below cover joining a friend’s private session in T6. If you are trying to reach a public game, the friend-invite checks do not apply. Public games are found through the server browser, and Plutonium’s T6 FAQ states that the project does not support matchmaking, so the server browser is the route for public servers (Plutonium T6 FAQ).

Also confirm which Plutonium game you are running. The custom-games guide gives different instructions and ports for different titles, so a port number from T6 should not be applied to another game. The sources reviewed for this article cover T6 in full detail, T5 and T4 only in general terms, and IW5 (Modern Warfare 3) as a title that may need extra steps.

Work through the T6 checks in order

These steps follow the T6 section of Plutonium’s custom-games guide. Start at step 1 and stop when the session connects.

  1. Confirm the friend relationship. Both players should follow each other on the Plutonium forums. After that, check whether each of you appears in the other’s in-game friend list. If the names do not appear, restart the game.
  2. Check the invite flow. Plutonium says T6 invitations should usually work without any extra router setup. Set party privacy to open, make sure your router or antivirus firewall is not blocking the game, open the friends list with F, and send the invite. If it still fails, have the other friend send the invite instead.
  3. Check host-side networking only if the standard flow fails. The player who hosts or sends the invite is the one who needs an open incoming port. Forwarding UDP 3074 on the host’s router is the documented next step, covered in the next section.
  4. Check that both clients match. Both players should be on the current Plutonium client and in the same game mode. Version and mode mismatches are covered in their own section below.
  5. Temporarily test blocking software. Make sure VPN or Hamachi-style tools are not interfering while you test. This is a diagnostic check, not a cure.
  6. Switch paths if the symptom is different. If the error is about public servers or game files rather than a friend invite, use the server browser or repair the base game, as explained in the final section.

Host-side port forwarding: UPnP or a manual rule

Only the player hosting the session needs to accept incoming connections. Joining players do not need to open a port just to join a friend, according to Plutonium’s guide. Open the port on the host’s side only after the basic invite checks have failed.

Option one: UPnP

The custom-games guide describes UPnP as an automatic way to open ports. It also warns that UPnP may not work on every network setup, so a successful UPnP setting is not proof that the port is open. If you have UPnP enabled and the join still fails, move to the manual rule.

  • Strike Force Levels: New to the Call of Duty Franchise, strike force levels provide sandbox style game play experiences, allowing players to take command of any element of their squad at any time
  • Branching Story lines: Choices the player makes could mean the difference between life and death for some characters and there exists an even greater opportunity for multiple endings
  • Single Player Character Customization: Choose from a variety of weapons and load outs providing multiple choices for how you approach single player missions

Option two: manual UDP 3074 forwarding

For T6, the official instructions say to forward UDP port 3074 on the host’s router, restart the game, and try again. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so look for the port-forwarding or virtual server section in your router’s admin page and consult its manual for the exact labels. UPnP and manual forwarding are two methods with the same goal. You do not need both.

Client version and game mode

Launch Plutonium through its normal updater path, then compare the launcher’s Core version with the latest changelog. Plutonium’s updater guide says launcher updates are automatic. It also warns that pinning the launcher while it is running can bypass the updater, so avoid keeping an old launcher version in place to get around a problem.

Both players also need to be in the same game mode. A Plutonium staff reply gives the example of a friend invited to multiplayer while the other player is in Zombies, which will not connect. A version number mentioned in an older forum reply reflects that period only and is not the current release, so compare against the changelog rather than any number quoted in a thread.

Blocking software and VPN tools

Plutonium’s official instructions say to make sure router or antivirus firewalls do not block the game. Staff replies also suggest that both players turn off VPN software and Hamachi-style tools while testing. Use this as a diagnostic: turn the tool off, try the join, then turn it back on. A VPN is not proven to be the cause in every case, and a successful test is evidence, not a permanent fix.

When the error is not a friend-invite problem

Some “Unable to Join” messages come from something other than the network. Plutonium’s T6 FAQ requires selecting the Black Ops II game folder during setup. If you do not have a base Black Ops II installation, the FAQ points to its install guide. Buying the game is only relevant if you lack a legitimate compatible copy. It is not a fix for an invitation or networking error.

  • All-new create-a-class: Create-a-class has been re-imagined, introducing players to a new "pick-10" allocation system, allowing an unprecedented number of combinations of create-a-class content. Players no longer have to take content from each category instead, trade items from one category for extra items in another - any combination of 10 items makes almost anything possible.
  • Pick 10 System: Ten points and nearly endless combinations: every piece of content is worth one point, and you can spend your 10 points in any way you like, encouraging a greater level of customization for individual play styles
  • Wildcards: Also a point each, Wildcards allow players to "extend the system" and configure classes in more unique ways - players can take multiple perks from one category, equip their primary with three attachments, carry two lethals, and more
  • All-new score streaks: Score Streaks reward players for helping their team win the game - capturing flags, defending your teammate with an assault shield, getting kills and assists are all examples of actions that help your team win and thus give you score.
  • Upgraded weapons, attachments and equipment: Near-future warfare means upgrades in technology that soldiers will use in the field. Additionally, weapon perks are now built into the attachments.

The same FAQ associates missing or corrupted game files with initialization or asset errors. If you see those errors, verify or repair the base game through the store client where you installed Black Ops II, rather than changing router settings. Those errors point to the game files, not to the friend-session network path.

What forum reports do and do not establish

Forum threads contain useful diagnoses, but they are case-specific. Reports often use phrasing such as “unable to join game session,” “unable to join servers,” or “my friend and I have tried joining each other.” These reports show that the message is common, but they do not establish how often any particular cause produces it.

Some users say closing Steam, repeatedly sending invites, or changing unrelated settings helped them. These reports are anecdotal and inconsistent. In one thread from 2022, a Plutonium staff member described a reported Steam update as coincidental rather than as the cause. Treat anecdotes as things to test, not as confirmed fixes. The steps in this article are the ones Plutonium documents, and they are the ones to try first, in the order shown.

For the threads that informed this guidance, see the “how to fix unable to join game session” thread, the “Unable to join servers, UPnP is enabled” thread, and the “Unable to join game for both me and my friend” thread.
