Minecraft has not given a canonical in-world explanation for why ghasts have tears. The official Minecraft article about ghast tears says its author, Duncan Geere, does not know the real reason; his suggestion is a joke, not established lore.
Is there an official lore explanation for ghast tears?
No. The Minecraft article does not explain the tears as a biological trait or part of ghast history. Geere jokingly theorizes that ghasts are weepy because the item had not yet been covered in Minecraft’s “Taking Inventory” column. That is the author’s joke, not a canonical origin story.
What do ghast tears do in the game?
Ghast tears are a mob drop with two crafting and brewing uses: they are ingredients for Potions of Regeneration and End crystals.
Getting a ghast tear
A ghast has a chance to drop a tear when defeated. Looting increases the chance and can increase the number dropped; Minecraft’s 2024 article says up to four can drop at once with maximum Looting.
