If your PS3 ignores a USB drive, or shows the drive but not the files you saved on it, the cause is usually one of four things: a connection problem, too many USB devices attached at once, a file system the console cannot read, or a file type the console does not play or display. Check them in that order. The first two cost nothing to test, and the file system check is where most drive-side failures turn up.
Start with the physical connection
- Seat the drive fully. Unplug it, wait a few seconds, and push it firmly into the port until it is fully inserted.
- Try another port. Sony’s PS3 Safety and Support manual says some combinations of connected devices and connectors may not be recognized, so moving the drive to a different port is a fair test. Sony’s PS3 Safety and Support manual
- Remove other USB devices. The same manual states that the system may not recognize storage media or a USB Mass Storage Class device when more than the allotted number of media or devices are connected. Unplug unused storage and USB devices, then reconnect only the drive you are testing.
Check the file system and partitions
Most drives that a PS3 cannot read were formatted for a PC in a way the console does not support. Sony’s Japanese-language PS3 storage media page says FAT32 and FAT16 can be used, while NTFS and Unix-family formats cannot. It also says external storage should be a single partition, not split into several. Sony’s PS3-compatible storage media page
| File system | Usable on PS3 (per Sony) | Per-file size limit (per Sony) | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAT32 | Yes | 4 GB per file | The format the PS3 update method described below requires |
| FAT16 | Yes | 2 GB per file | Usable, but the tighter file size limit can block large video files |
| NTFS | No | Not stated | Common on Windows drives; a drive in this format must be reformatted to be used |
| Unix-family formats | No | Not stated | Sony does not name specific formats in this category |
The per-file limits are FAT filesystem limits as Sony describes them. The storage page does not show a publication year, so treat the figures as Sony’s current stated limits rather than a dated benchmark.
Back up before you reformat
Formatting erases everything on the drive, and that includes files a PS3 cannot display. Sony’s PS3 Safety and Support manual recommends copying the data you need to a PC before reformatting media the console does not recognize.

- Copy every file you want to keep to a computer, and confirm the copies open.
- Format the drive as FAT32 using your computer’s own formatting tool, leaving it as a single partition.
- Copy the files back, using only file types the console supports (see the next section).
When the console sees the drive but not your files
Detecting a drive and displaying its files are separate steps. Sony’s CECH-2501A user manual says a connected USB Mass Storage Class-compatible device should display an icon. Only supported playable or viewable files appear in their matching media category, and some folders may stay hidden until you select “Display All.” Sony’s CECH-2501A user manual
- Confirm the drive’s icon appears on the console’s screen. If it does not, return to the connection and file system checks above.
- Open the media category that matches the file: music, photos, or video.
- If a folder is missing, look for the “Display All” option in that category. The manual describes the option but does not give its exact location, so check the menus of the category you are in.
The same manual lists ATRAC, MP3, AAC, JPEG, and MPEG-4 among the formats the console can play or view. That is a list from an older model’s manual, not a complete codec list for every PS3 model or software version. If a file type is missing from it, the manual cannot confirm whether the console supports it.

Test with a known-compatible drive
If the connection, file system, and file checks do not solve the problem, a second drive helps you narrow down the cause. Use a drive that is already FAT32 or FAT16 with a single partition. Capacity and brand do not establish compatibility.
- The second drive works in the same port: the first drive is the likely fault. Back it up and reformat it, or replace it.
- The first drive works in another port but not the original one: the port or its connection is the likely fault.
- Neither drive works after correct formatting and a single partition: a console-side problem is possible. Sony’s manual says a comparison test narrows the cause but does not by itself prove which console part has failed, and the sources do not give a repair diagnosis.
If you do not own a second drive, a basic FAT32 flash drive is a reasonable low-cost test device. Back up and reformat the drive you already have first, since that may be all you need.

Preparing a USB drive for a PS3 system update
Sony’s current system software support page describes a separate procedure for updating the console from USB media. Use only official update files and the steps Sony describes.
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 on a PC or Mac. Sony’s instructions say to create the folder on “a USB drive formatted as FAT32.”
- Create a folder named
PS3on the drive. - Inside
PS3, create a subfolder namedUPDATE. - Save the official update file in
UPDATEunder the filenamePS3UPDAT.PUP. - Connect the drive to the PS3 and select Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media.
Sony’s support page lists version 4.88 as the PS3 system software version, and it shows no publication date. Check the page for the current version before downloading an update. Sony’s PS3 system software update page

What the sources do and do not establish
- The filesystem rules come from Sony’s storage page, which is published in Japanese. The rules describe PS3 storage compatibility only and should not be read as broader hardware claims.
- The troubleshooting advice comes from Sony’s PS3 Safety and Support manual, which is an older document. The media guidance comes from the CECH-2501A user manual, which covers one model and one software version.
- Neither manual gives a diagnosis for hardware failure. If several properly formatted, known-compatible drives fail in every port, the available sources do not identify the faulty console part, and contacting Sony support is the next step.
