Why Do Some Games Take 100 Hours to Finish? Main Story, Side Quests, and Completion Time Explained

“100 hours” usually describes a completionist goal, not the required story. Here is how main-story, side-content, and full-completion estimates differ—and how to read them accurately.

A “100-hour game” does not necessarily require 100 hours to reach its ending. The figure may describe a completionist route that adds side quests, exploration, collectibles, achievements, and other optional goals to a much shorter main-story path.

To understand any playtime claim, first identify what “finish” includes, who produced the estimate, and when it was recorded. A number attached to one category or one game is not a general average for the medium.

What does “finish” mean in a 100-hour game?

Players use “finished” to describe several different outcomes. A person who follows only required objectives may see the ending long before someone attempting every optional activity. Neither player is necessarily using the word incorrectly; they are using different completion targets.

Main story

A main-story estimate covers the objectives required to reach the game’s principal ending, with little deliberate detouring. It normally excludes most optional missions, collectible hunts, and achievement cleanup. It is the closest answer to “How long until the credits?” but even this category can vary with route choices and pace.

Main story plus sides

This broader run includes the central narrative and a meaningful selection of extra tasks. Side quests can add character stories, areas, equipment, challenges, or alternate outcomes. A player may choose the side content that looks useful or interesting without trying to clear every item on a checklist.

Completionist

Completionist play aims at an exhaustive target: every tracked achievement or medal, all collectibles, optional missions, discovered activities, and other goals the game exposes. Some games make this target explicit through a progress screen; others leave the player to define “everything” personally. Because the scope is larger and more subjective, completionist figures are often far above the main-story number.

All styles and mixed estimates

Some services publish an “All Styles” figure intended to represent a mixture of play approaches. It should not be treated as a guaranteed average or as a value that can be calculated from the other categories. The category reflects the service’s own data and definitions.

Label What the player is trying to do What it usually leaves out
Main Story Complete required narrative objectives and reach the principal ending Most side quests, collectibles, achievements, and optional exploration
Main + Sides Complete the story and a substantial selection of optional missions or activities Some low-priority tasks and exhaustive cleanup
Completionist Pursue every available achievement, medal, collectible, mission, and tracked goal Nothing intentionally, although the game may contain ambiguous or untracked activities
All Styles Use a combined estimate for varied approaches No single, consistent completion target

A dated example shows why the labels matter

A Steam Curator page titled “How Long To Beat” displayed the following figures on December 8, 2025:

Category Displayed time What it represents
Main Story 35½ hours The required narrative route
Main + Sides 69½ hours The story plus additional tasks
Completionist 133 hours An attempt to clear the game’s full set of optional goals
All Styles 65 hours A mixed-style figure shown by that page

These numbers belong to one game and one dated listing. They are not a survey of the industry, and they do not establish that games generally take 100 hours. The same title can therefore be described accurately as a roughly 35-hour story game, a nearly 70-hour story-and-sides game, or a 133-hour completionist game, depending on the question being asked.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

The figures also demonstrate why a long completionist value should not be substituted for the main-story duration. Saying that the game “takes 133 hours” without naming the category hides the information a prospective player needs.

Why optional content can add dozens of hours

Side quests create parallel objectives

Optional missions frequently use the same characters, maps, and combat systems as the main campaign while sending the player through additional objectives. A single side quest may be short, but a large quest log creates a second narrative route alongside the required one. Players who complete most of that log can spend roughly twice as long as players who stay on the critical path, as the dated example illustrates.

Exploration turns travel into play

Open areas, hidden rooms, environmental puzzles, map markers, and unmarked discoveries encourage players to leave the direct route. Exploration time is not a fixed cost: one person may travel straight to the next objective while another searches every building or mountain pass. A completion estimate that includes discoveries is measuring a different activity from a sprint through story missions.

Collectibles and achievement cleanup are separate work

Collectibles are often distributed across places the story visits only once. Finding the remaining items can require revisiting earlier areas, consulting an in-game tracker, or replaying sections. Achievements and medals may impose additional conditions, such as completing a challenge, using a particular tactic, or finishing optional objectives. These goals extend a playthrough even after the narrative has ended.

Optional systems can multiply the route

Games may include side activities, upgrade objectives, faction tasks, challenge rooms, or other systems that are not needed for the ending. When a player treats each system as part of “beating” the game, the target becomes a bundle of many activities rather than one storyline. The extra hours are therefore a consequence of scope, not evidence that the required plot is unusually long.

Why two players can take different amounts of time

A completion-time estimate describes a play style, not a promise. Even players pursuing the same category can finish at different speeds. Route familiarity, time spent reading or watching dialogue, willingness to experiment, exploration habits, retries after failure, and selected difficulty all affect an individual run. A player who knows the map and skips optional conversations may finish below an estimate; someone learning the systems or revisiting areas may exceed it.

The available evidence does not establish a universal ranking for these factors or a current formula that predicts an individual’s hours. Treat them as sources of variation rather than precise adjustments. The safest interpretation is a range associated with a stated goal, not a deadline that every player should meet.

How completion-time estimates are produced

Developer statements

A developer may announce an intended length for a campaign or for full completion. Such a statement is a planning claim from the people who made the game, and it may use an internal definition of “complete” that differs from a player-facing database. Check whether the statement refers to the main story, a typical playthrough, or every activity.

Player-reported databases and curators

Services that collect playtime reports can display separate categories for main story, story plus sides, and completionist play. Their numbers summarize submitted experiences or the service’s own methodology. They are useful for comparing categories when the labels are clear, but they remain estimates tied to a particular date and sample.

Academic measurement

A published paper on measuring game playtime uses survival-analysis methods to examine how long sessions or playthroughs last under time- and sample-limited conditions. That method can describe distributions and account for incomplete observations; it does not produce one universal duration for every game or explain every player’s pace. A dissertation discussing the “Main Story” category and completion-rate work around HowLongToBeat is useful historical context, but it should not be treated as current platform documentation.

How to read a “100 hours” claim before accepting it

  1. Identify the game and edition. A number has no meaning without the specific title, version, and content set it describes.
  2. Find the category. Look for “Main Story,” “Main + Sides,” “Completionist,” “All Styles,” or an equivalent label.
  3. Check the scope. Determine whether the figure includes optional missions, exploration, collectibles, achievements, downloadable content, or repeated attempts.
  4. Check who supplied it. Distinguish a developer estimate from a player-reported or curator-displayed figure.
  5. Check the date. A listing can change as more reports arrive or as updates add content.
  6. Use it as a planning range. Budget time around your intended goal instead of treating the number as a guaranteed requirement.

If a page gives only “100 hours” with no category or methodology, it is incomplete information. Ask whether the writer means reaching the ending, clearing most side content, or pursuing every tracked objective.

The 500-hour example: a warning against headline numbers

In January 2022, Axios reported that Techland announced at least 500 hours to fully complete Dying Light 2. The figure prompted a strong reaction because it sounded like a single playthrough would require more than 20 days of continuous time. The important qualification was “fully complete”: the claim concerned an exhaustive target, not necessarily the main campaign.

This example is historical, not a typical playtime statistic. It shows how a maximum-completion claim can dominate discussion even when most players choose a narrower goal. Whenever a striking number appears, read the verb attached to it—finish, complete, experience, or see everything—because those words can describe different workloads.

Why there is no reliable industry-wide “normal”

One game’s category figures cannot be turned into an average for all games. Titles differ in structure, optional-content density, replay requirements, and how they define achievements. The available evidence does not provide a representative current distribution of game lengths by genre, nor a reliable global average for main-story or completionist time.

That limitation matters when interpreting “100-hour game” as a cultural label. It can describe a particular role-playing game’s completionist route, a publisher’s ambitious target, or a player’s personal accounting. It does not show that 100 hours is the standard length of modern games or that shorter games are incomplete.

A practical way to estimate your own time

Start with your finish line

Write down the result you actually want: credits, story plus selected side quests, or every achievement. If your goal is unclear, choose the narrowest category first and add optional work only when it interests you. This prevents a completionist number from making a story-focused playthrough look artificially long.

Separate guaranteed work from discretionary work

Use the main-story estimate as the baseline for required objectives. Treat side missions, exploration, collectibles, and achievements as separate blocks that you can accept or skip. This mirrors how the categories are defined and makes it easier to stop after the ending without feeling that you have failed to “finish.”

Record your own pace

After several sessions, compare your elapsed time with the category you selected. If you are consistently slower, allow more calendar time; if you are faster, do not assume every section will scale at the same rate. Your save file is more relevant to your schedule than a single headline number from another player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck after updates or added content

New missions, expansions, or achievement requirements can change what a completionist target contains. When using a published estimate, note its capture date and verify that it covers the edition you own. Do not mix a base-game main-story figure with a complete-edition completionist figure without labeling the difference.

What a 100-hour estimate should tell you

A well-labeled estimate answers a narrow planning question: how much time players with a particular goal have typically needed for a particular game at a particular point in time. It can help you decide whether to pursue side content now or return later, but it cannot predict your exact route.

The most useful reading is therefore comparative: a main-story value tells you the cost of the required narrative, a Main + Sides value shows how much optional storytelling may add, and a completionist value indicates the scale of exhaustive cleanup. Once those scopes are separated, “100 hours” stops being a mysterious property of a game and becomes a description of what the player chose to do.
