What to do if you can’t join or stay connected to a Mario Kart World online race

A step-by-step guide to diagnosing Mario Kart World online race failures on Nintendo Switch 2, from service status and updates to NAT, latency, Wi‑Fi, wired testing, error 2618-0514, and ISP or Nintendo escalation.

If Mario Kart World cannot start an online race or disconnects as matchmaking begins, first separate a console Internet failure from a peer-to-peer matchmaking problem. Check Nintendo’s service status, install the current game update, run System Settings → Internet → Test Connection, and record the Internet result, NAT type, download speed, and upload speed. Then change one local-network variable at a time and retest.

A successful connection to Nintendo’s services does not prove that every peer-to-peer race will work. NAT compatibility, latency, the other player’s network, and the type of Internet service can still prevent a race from starting or cause it to time out.

What you see Most useful interpretation First action
The console’s Internet test fails The Switch 2 is not reaching Nintendo’s services reliably, so this is an Internet-access problem before it is a matchmaking problem. Follow the error shown by the test, then retest after correcting the console or local network.
The test succeeds, but every online race fails to begin or drops during matchmaking NAT restrictions, latency, an unsuitable service type, or a Nintendo-side outage may be affecting peer-to-peer communication. Check service status, read the NAT result, and test another network if possible.
Races work with most people but fail with one particular player Either player’s network can affect a peer-to-peer session. The other player’s NAT or latency may be the limiting factor. Have both players run their connection tests and compare results.
The game reports a specific error code The code can narrow the cause more effectively than a speed number alone. Write down the complete code and message and use Nintendo’s code-specific guidance.

Check service status, membership, and the game version

Rule out an outage or maintenance window

Before changing your router, check Nintendo’s current service-status and maintenance notices. If Nintendo is reporting an outage or scheduled maintenance affecting online play, wait until service returns and try the race again. A local connection test cannot fix a Nintendo-side interruption.

Install the current Mario Kart World update

Mario Kart World’s Internet features require the game’s required update, and everyone joining the same online session must be on the same software version. At the time of the cited Nintendo update page’s 2026 listing, Ver. 1.8.0 was shown as released on September 9, 2026. Versions change, so check Nintendo’s update page and the console’s update prompt rather than treating 1.8.0 as a permanent requirement.

Confirm Nintendo Switch Online

Online play also requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If the membership has expired or belongs to a different Nintendo Account than the one playing, resolve that account issue before diagnosing Wi-Fi or NAT.

Run the Switch 2 connection test and record every result

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Internet.
  3. Select Test Connection.
  4. Write down the displayed Internet Connection result, NAT type, download speed, and upload speed.

Nintendo describes the Internet Connection result as whether the console connected with Nintendo’s services. That result is necessary evidence, but it is not a guarantee that a peer-to-peer race with a particular player will negotiate successfully. Keep the values from each retest so you can tell whether a change actually altered the connection.

Understand NAT, speed, and latency

NAT is about reachability, not just bandwidth

Nintendo states that NAT type A is preferred and generally indicates that your network environment works well for connecting with other players. Nintendo describes NAT B as compatible with most other NAT types. More restrictive NAT environments can prevent some online activities, and a session can still fail because the other player has a restrictive NAT.

Result What Nintendo’s guidance means What it does not prove
NAT A Preferred for peer-to-peer communication and generally a favorable network environment. It does not guarantee that every player, ISP, route, or game session will work.
NAT B Compatible with most other NAT types. It does not rule out latency, service-type restrictions, outages, or a problem on the other player’s network.
NAT F Nintendo identifies this as a network restriction that makes peer-to-peer connections impossible. Changing download speed alone will not remove the underlying restriction.
Another restrictive result It may limit which players or activities can connect. The label alone does not identify whether the router, ISP, or the remote player is responsible.

Do not use the speed result as a guarantee

Nintendo’s matchmaking support flow uses 3 Mbps download as a troubleshooting branch. It is a decision point in that support flow, not a guaranteed minimum or a promise that a faster plan will solve matchmaking. Upload capacity, congestion, packet loss, NAT behavior, and the route to the other players can matter just as much.

Latency can time out a race even with an acceptable test

Latency is the delay between devices. A connection can report a successful Internet test and a seemingly acceptable NAT result while taking too long to establish a peer-to-peer session. Nintendo’s error guidance also identifies Internet service types that are unsuitable for peer-to-peer play as a possible cause. Therefore, investigate latency and service type when matchmaking repeatedly times out instead of buying a faster plan based only on the advertised download number.

Improve the local connection one change at a time

Test Wi-Fi from a stronger position

For a controlled Wi-Fi test, move the Switch 2 closer to the wireless router and reduce nearby objects or electronics that may interfere with the signal. Nintendo UK suggests a temporary test position of 3–5 metres (10–15 feet) from the router. That is a troubleshooting position, not a universal placement requirement. After moving the console, run System Settings → Internet → Test Connection again and try the race.

Make only one change before each retest. Otherwise, you cannot tell whether the position, a restart, a router setting, or an unrelated service change affected the result.

Compare with a docked wired connection

Nintendo’s Mario Kart World instructions describe an Ethernet test from the Switch 2 dock to the router or gateway. The console must be docked to use that wired connection. Connect the cable, confirm the dock is connected to the router or gateway, run the connection test again, and compare the NAT and matchmaking behavior with the Wi-Fi attempt.

A wired test can reveal Wi-Fi interference or signal problems, but it is not a promised cure for a restrictive NAT, high latency, an ISP limitation, an outage, or a problem on another player’s network. If the wired test produces the same NAT and timeout behavior, the fault is probably not simple wireless interference.

Restart network equipment and consider IPv6 only as a test

Nintendo’s NAT guidance suggests toggling IPv6 off and restarting network devices, then testing again. Record the original setting first so you can restore it if there is no improvement. Restart the modem, gateway, or router according to its normal procedure, wait for Internet service to return, and rerun the Switch 2 test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not factory-reset a router as a first step. Nintendo directs users to the router manufacturer for firmware updates and reset procedures because menus, connection credentials, and recovery steps differ by model. Contact the manufacturer before a reset if firmware or configuration appears to be involved.

Handle error 2618-0514 and similar matchmaking messages

Error 2618-0514 can reflect suboptimal NAT, high latency, or an Internet service type Nintendo does not recommend for peer-to-peer play. Note the complete code and wording, try another network if one is available, and follow Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting steps. The code is a diagnostic clue, not proof that one specific router option is always the answer.

Use another network to isolate the cause

A temporary test on a different network is one of the clearest ways to separate a console or game problem from a home-network restriction. If Mario Kart World works on the alternate network, the original connection may be restricting peer-to-peer communication or introducing excessive latency. Contact the original Internet service provider and describe the NAT result, the error code, and the fact that another network worked.

If the issue follows the Switch 2 across networks, verify the game update and membership again, then contact Nintendo Support with the recorded test values and error details. If only one friend is affected, ask that person to run the same test: their NAT or latency can prevent the pair from connecting even when your own test looks favorable.

Choose between connection paths using evidence

Comparison point Wi-Fi diagnostic Docked Ethernet diagnostic
Console position Signal quality and interference at the play location matter. The Switch 2 must remain docked and connected to the router or gateway.
What it can reveal Whether moving closer or reducing interference changes the test or matchmaking result. Whether wireless conditions are contributing to the failure.
What it cannot guarantee A strong signal does not guarantee NAT compatibility or low latency. A cable does not guarantee a different NAT type or fix an ISP, service, or remote-player problem.
Best comparison method Record the connection test before and after moving the console. Record the same four test fields and compare race behavior with the Wi-Fi result.

Do not rank Internet plans by download speed alone. Nintendo’s guidance gives NAT, latency, service type, and the other player’s network a role in matchmaking.

Know when the problem is a different multiplayer mode

Local multi-console LAN play is separate from ordinary Internet matchmaking. Nintendo says this arrangement requires a wired router, and a networking switch may be needed depending on how many consoles are connected. Those requirements do not make a networking switch a routine purchase for a player troubleshooting normal online races; use them only when setting up that distinct wired LAN mode.

Escalate with useful evidence

Escalate after you have checked service status, installed the current update, run the test, and tried a controlled connection change.

  • Internet service provider: Contact the ISP when another network works, the home network produces a restrictive NAT, or the service type appears unsuitable for peer-to-peer play. Provide the NAT result, test speeds, error code, and dates of failed attempts.
  • Router manufacturer: Ask about firmware and configuration when restarts or the documented IPv6 test do not help. Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions before considering a factory reset.
  • Nintendo Support: Contact Nintendo when the problem follows the console across networks, persists after the game and membership checks, or remains unexplained by the connection tests. Include the full error message and every recorded test result.
  • The other player: If races fail only with one person, have that player run the same test and investigate both networks rather than assuming your own connection is at fault.

This evidence-based sequence prevents a working Nintendo service connection from being mistaken for a guaranteed peer-to-peer path and avoids treating a router change or cable as a universal fix.
