Director Hidetaka Miyazaki called Elden Ring a culmination of that work. But the official interviews do not establish that every similar-looking enemy is literally the same model, asset, or creature in the story.
Why Elden Ring feels familiar
Elden Ring was made by FromSoftware, the studio behind Dark Souls, with Miyazaki directing. In a 2019 interview, Miyazaki said development began just after the Dark Souls 3 DLC was finished. He described the new game as a dark fantasy action RPG that would include things the team had not been able to do in Dark Souls. Xbox Wire’s 2019 interview makes clear that the project grew out of the same creative lineage, even as the team aimed to expand it.
Later, Miyazaki described Elden Ring as a culmination of FromSoftware’s work on Dark Souls and its other games. That means the resemblance is not accidental: the studio carried forward design ideas and refined them from one project to another. It does not mean the games have identical enemy rosters.
What carries over from Dark Souls
Challenge and accomplishment
Miyazaki has identified the sense of accomplishment as a continuing design concern from Dark Souls into Elden Ring. In a 2022 interview, he said that this feeling had remained a theme since Dark Souls, while the newer game added a stronger sense of adventure: a large world filled with unknowns and threats. His Xbox Wire interview describes continuity in the intended player experience, not proof that particular enemies were copied.

Combat ideas refined across games
FromSoftware has also carried mechanics between games and adapted them. Miyazaki said Elden Ring’s stance-break mechanic is similar to Sekiro’s posture system. He also explained that the weapon-skill system was created with Dark Souls 3 and expanded into a broader range of skills for Elden Ring. These examples show how the studio iterates on combat ideas; they are not enemy-by-enemy evidence.
That process can make encounters feel recognizable even when the exact opponents differ. Players may recognize familiar rhythms—learning an enemy’s attacks, finding an opening, and earning a hard-won victory—because the games share design priorities and combat traditions.

What changed in Elden Ring
Miyazaki identified the open world as the biggest difference from the earlier games. Elden Ring gives players a larger space to explore, a broader narrative scope, and more freedom in how they move through the world. He also described its stronger sense of adventure as a contrast to the established feeling of accomplishment. PlayStation.Blog’s interview with Miyazaki discusses these intended differences alongside the game’s continuing links to FromSoftware’s previous work.
Greater freedom changes how familiar design principles play out. Rather than simply following a fixed sequence of encounters, players can explore and approach challenges through the open world. The underlying interest in dangerous opponents and satisfying victories can remain while the scale and structure around them change.

Does “the same enemies” mean reused models or lore?
Not necessarily. “The same enemies” can refer to several different kinds of resemblance, and they should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Visual resemblance: Two enemies may look alike, but appearance alone does not prove that one model or asset was reused.
- Mechanical resemblance: Opponents may share attack patterns or combat roles, reflecting familiar design ideas without being the same enemy.
- Asset reuse: Establishing that a specific model or asset was reused requires evidence about that particular pair. The interviews cited here do not provide a comprehensive account of enemy assets.
- Shared fictional identity: A similar design does not establish that enemies are the same creature within the games’ stories.
The interviews document a shared studio lineage and deliberate iteration, but they do not give a complete comparison of the games’ enemy rosters. So the careful answer is that Elden Ring feels familiar because it builds on FromSoftware’s established design ideas; whether any particular enemy is literally reused requires separate evidence about that specific case.

Why some summons may resemble enemies
Miyazaki said Spirit Ashes were selected essentially from enemies, with their gameplay function guiding which ones were chosen and how they were designed. That explains why some summons are drawn from the game’s enemy designs. It does not show that those enemies were reused from Dark Souls.
