Some entries describe children going missing or being carried away; others soften the story. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the claim that Drifloon are reincarnated human souls is explicitly called an unconfirmed rumor.
Why does Drifloon take children?
The Pokédex presents Drifloon as a Pokémon associated with children being lured or spirited away. That is the in-universe explanation for the unsettling reputation—not a consistently confirmed event with a single established cause. The wording changes between games, and Pokémon’s own guidance says unanswered lore is left open to fans’ interpretation.
What the Pokédex says in different games
| Game or source | What it says | Tone and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Legends: Arceus | Drifloon are said to lure young children away and carry them to the afterlife. The entry also mentions a rumor that Drifloon are reincarnated human souls. | The entry explicitly says the reincarnated-soul rumor is unconfirmed. Pokémon Database’s version table reproduces the wording. |
| Pokémon Sword | Drifloon approaches children, perhaps seeking company, but often runs away if they play too roughly. | A less ominous account than the afterlife story. Pokémon Database’s version table compares the entry. |
| Pokémon Scarlet | A child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on could go missing. | Framed as a warning, not an explanation of where the legend came from. The official Pokémon Pokédex uses similar whispered-warning language. |
These entries do not establish that Drifloon literally kidnaps children in every Pokémon story or continuity. They show that the Pokédex repeats a legend in different forms: sometimes as a warning about a child disappearing, sometimes as a darker claim about being carried to the afterlife, and sometimes as an encounter where Drifloon retreats.
Does Drifloon really take children to the afterlife?
The Legends: Arceus entry says Drifloon are “said” to carry children to the afterlife, so it presents the claim as hearsay within the Pokédex lore. It separately describes the reincarnated-human-soul idea as an unconfirmed rumor. Neither detail supplies a definitive origin for Drifloon’s reputation.

Why is there no confirmed origin?
Pokémon Support’s answer to questions about character origins, legends, and histories says: “It is the intent of the Pokémon creators that questions that have not already been answered within the video games, animated movies, or TV shows, be left to the imaginations and interpretations of Pokémon fans.” The guidance was published January 30, 2026. Since the specific cause of Drifloon’s child-luring legend is not established in the material cited here, it is best treated as an open piece of Pokémon lore rather than settled canon.
