The failure may depend on how RetroArch was installed, whether its Core Downloader is available, and whether it can write to the configured core directory. Check those details and capture a log before assuming a specific fix.
What the error means
A core is a program RetroArch uses to run games and other content; it is separate from the RetroArch frontend. As Libretro’s core installation guide puts it, “Cores are essentially other programs and games that run through RetroArch.” The notification “Failed to install core: [core]” tells you the installation did not complete, but does not say whether the problem happened while downloading, extracting, or writing the core.
There is no single cause or universal fix established for everyone who sees this message. The useful first step is to identify your installation route and platform, then check the relevant downloader and directory settings.
Check whether your installation method supports Core Downloader
In-app Core Downloader
For installations that support it, the documented route is Online Updater → Core Downloader. If Core Downloader is missing from the menu, check Settings → User Interface → Menu Item Visibility and see whether the entry is hidden. The Libretro guide explains both the in-app route and the visibility setting.

Ubuntu PPA installation
If you installed RetroArch through the Ubuntu PPA, Libretro documents a different route: install cores through the Ubuntu package manager rather than assuming the in-app downloader is supported. The guide notes that the downloader is disabled for this installation method. It also says that if you manually enable it, the configured Cores directory must be writable. This guidance is specific to the Ubuntu PPA case, not a general fix for every operating system or distribution.
Check the configured core directory when relevant
RetroArch uses a configured location to store cores. If the installation method and downloader route are appropriate but installation still fails, check the core directory setting and whether RetroArch can write there. Libretro’s Directory Configuration guide covers directory settings; its writable-directory note in the core installation guide applies specifically to an Ubuntu PPA installation where the downloader has been manually enabled. Do not assume changing this location will resolve failures on other platforms.

Capture a log and report the exact setup
A log from the failed attempt can help distinguish a download, extraction, or destination problem. Libretro’s log instructions describe these settings:
- Open Settings → Logging.
- Enable Logging Verbosity and Log to File.
- Retry installing the affected core.
- Find the resulting log in the System Events Logs directory shown under Directory settings.
When asking for help, include the RetroArch version, device and operating system, the affected core, how RetroArch was installed, and the log from the retry. These are the details Libretro requests in its troubleshooting guide.

What Android reports do—and do not—establish
Two issue reports illustrate why the notification should not be treated as a platform-wide diagnosis. One user described core downloads failing on Android 10 with RetroArch 1.9.12 while other Online Updater entries worked (issue #16037). Another report describes the same notification on Android 14; the reporter speculated that their Play Store version was old, but that is not an independently confirmed cause (issue #16300). These are individual reports, not controlled tests, and neither establishes a confirmed general fix.
