Micah is also useful to Dutch as a willing, dangerous gunman. Rockstar’s official material establishes the story’s setting but does not state Dutch’s motive, so the explanations below are interpretations of the characters, drawn from how players discuss the story.
What the official material establishes
Rockstar’s September 28, 2017 trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 presents the game as the story of Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang, which survives through robbery, fighting and theft. Rockstar’s official gang feature page places the gang at the centre of the game. Neither page explains why Dutch trusts Micah or why he tolerates Micah’s conduct. Any answer to the question is therefore an reading of the characters, not a confirmed explanation from the developer.

Why Dutch favors Micah
Two explanations recur in fan discussion. They are complementary rather than competing, and neither is canon.
Micah confirms Dutch’s self-image
The most common reading is emotional. Micah presents himself as loyal and aligned with Dutch, so when other members question Dutch’s decisions, Micah is an easy source of agreement. A player in an r/reddeadredemption thread posted October 17, 2023 put it simply: Dutch favors Micah because Micah never says no and encourages the outlaw life Dutch wants to keep living. That is one fan’s interpretation, not a verified psychological reading of the character.

The same dynamic explains why Dutch’s attachment looks blind to outsiders. Players often describe him as “so blind to Micah lying all the time,” a phrase that captures the gap between how Micah behaves and how Dutch treats him. The gap is the point of the reading: Dutch is not evaluating Micah on his record, but on the affirmation Micah provides.
Micah is useful as a gunman
The second explanation is practical. Players point to Micah’s perceived skill in violent work, and to the fact that a gang living by armed robbery needs people who will fight. This view is subjective. Fans disagree about how capable Micah is relative to other members, so it is safer to say he is valued for his violence than to rank him against the rest of the gang.

Why the gang does not share Dutch’s preference
Dutch’s favoritism is not the same as the gang’s consensus. Community discussion separates Dutch’s protection of Micah from the tolerance other members show him. Arthur and Hosea are the characters most often cited as voices who challenge Micah’s decisions, which is why Micah’s standing depends on Dutch rather than on the group’s regard for him. Keeping that distinction in mind avoids the common mistake of treating the whole gang as Micah’s admirers.
Phrases players use
The question appears in fan threads as “Why does the gang keep Micah around?” (a r/reddeadredemption post from June 12, 2025) and as the “so blind” line above. These are community wording, not official terminology, but they are a good guide to what readers are asking: they usually want to know why Dutch overlooks behaviour that others notice.

How the explanations compare
| Explanation | What supports it | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Micah confirms Dutch’s self-image | Micah agrees with Dutch and backs his plans when others object, as described in fan discussion | Interpretive; no official statement from Rockstar addresses Dutch’s feelings toward Micah |
| Micah is useful as a gunman | Players point to his violent skill and the gang’s reliance on armed work | Subjective; fans disagree on his standing among the gang’s fighters |
| Dutch’s preference is not the gang’s view | Arthur and Hosea are cited as challengers to Micah’s decisions | Describes the group’s tolerance, not a measurable opinion |
Where the reading lands
Dutch’s attachment to Micah is best read as a sign of Dutch’s own weakening judgement. Micah gives Dutch both affirmation and force, and Dutch’s willingness to overlook Micah’s conduct shows how much he needs the outlaw leader he believes himself to be. That conclusion is an interpretation of the story’s character dynamics, not something Rockstar has stated. The game itself, in which Micah’s loyalty and Dutch’s trust are both shown on screen, is the best place to test it.
