Why Does Helldivers 2 Keep Crashing on PC? A Step-by-Step Fix Guide

Helldivers 2 crashes on PC for many different reasons, and no single fix works for everyone. Arrowhead Game Studios’ current support guidance is a sequence of checks, from confirming your hardware meets the requirements through to reinstalling the game and contacting support. Work through them in order, change one thing at a time, and note what you tried. That approach is the fastest way to find out whether your problem is on your side or a game issue Arrowhead is still working on.

Identify what kind of crash you are seeing

“Crashing” covers several different failures, and they point to different checks. Before you change anything, note which of these matches your situation:

• The game closes to the desktop. Only Helldivers 2 exits, and Windows keeps running. Players often call this a “crash to desktop.”
• The game fails during loading or in a mission. The crash happens on the loading screen, at the start of a mission, or partway through one.
• The game freezes. The window stops responding and may need to be closed from Task Manager.
• The whole PC shuts down or restarts. The failure takes the computer with it, not just the game.

Arrowhead’s troubleshooting page does not split its steps by symptom, so use this list as a way to organise your notes. The details matter most if you later contact support, and the whole-PC shutdown case is the one to describe most carefully.

Check your PC against the published requirements

Start with hardware, because a system below the minimum will not run the game reliably. Arrowhead’s support page for minimum requirements (updated August 26, 2026) lists the following:

Meeting these figures does not guarantee a stable game. It only tells you the hardware is in the range the developer tested against.

Storage figures differ between sources

Arrowhead and Steam list different storage requirements, and the difference is large. Check the current Steam listing before you install or reinstall, and plan for the larger figure.

Work through the fixes in order

Arrowhead’s guidance follows this sequence: requirements, drivers, Steam file verification, the Arrowhead AppData folder, Async Compute, reinstall, then support. Each step below is developer guidance and is reversible.

1. Update your graphics and other PC drivers

1. Identify your graphics card and note its current driver version.
2. Install the latest graphics driver from the manufacturer’s website, NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, depending on your GPU.
3. Also update motherboard (chipset) and network drivers, which Arrowhead names specifically.
4. Restart the PC and launch the game.

Arrowhead frames outdated drivers as a common source of problems, not as a confirmed cause of your particular crash. Record the version numbers before you change them, so you can roll back if a new driver makes things worse. Prefer downloads from the PC or component manufacturer over third-party driver updaters.

2. Verify the game files through Steam

1. Open your Steam Library.
2. Right-click Helldivers 2 and select Properties.
3. Select Installed Files.
4. Select Verify file integrity and wait for Steam to finish.

Steam replaces files that are missing or altered. Arrowhead presents this as a recommended check, not a guaranteed fix.

3. Clear the contents of the Arrowhead AppData folder

1. Close the game.
2. Press Windows key + R to open Run, type %appdata%, and press Enter.
3. Open the Arrowhead folder and delete its contents, not the folder itself.
4. Launch the game again. It may rebuild its local settings.

This step resets local configuration, so back up anything you want to keep first, such as custom settings files. Delete only what is inside the Arrowhead folder. Leave other folders in AppData alone.

4. Test Async Compute

Arrowhead’s general troubleshooting page (updated September 1, 2026) states: “Enabling/Disabling Async Compute may aid performance for some users, depending on hardware.” Its effect depends on your hardware. Try enabling it, then disabling it, and change only that one setting between test runs. If you do not see the option in the game’s graphics settings, your build may not expose it.

5. Reinstall the game

Arrowhead recommends a full uninstall and reinstall if your specifications and drivers are fine and earlier steps have not helped. Uninstall through Steam, restart the PC, then install the game again. Check the storage figures above before you start.

6. Contact Arrowhead support

If you still cannot play, Arrowhead directs players to its support team. Include the details below. Arrowhead’s current support form may ask for specific items, so check it before you submit.

• CPU, GPU, and amount of RAM
• Windows version
• Graphics and other driver versions
• Whether the crash happens at launch, during loading, or in a mission
• Whether the whole PC shuts down or only the game exits
• Any error text shown on screen or in logs
• Which of the steps above you have already tried

What the known-issues page does and does not tell you

Arrowhead’s known-issues page was updated October 8, 2026. It states: “Most crashes, performance, and connectivity problems are ongoing issues that are always being worked on and are not listed here.” Arrowhead Game Studios Player Support publishes that page. Because of this, the page’s absence of your problem does not mean your crash is unique to your PC. It also does not mean the game is at fault. Treat it as a status update, not a diagnosis.

Avoid unofficial fixes

Forums often suggest tips that go beyond Arrowhead’s guidance. Arrowhead’s troubleshooting guidance does not include downloading DLL files, editing the registry, changing BIOS voltage, or disabling security software. Do not apply those fixes as a first response. If you have already tried them, undo them before following the steps above, so you do not mix changes and cannot tell which one helped.

Notes on the current situation

Player reports describe the symptoms above, such as “crash to desktop” or “crashing consistently upon launch.” These reports show how people describe the problem. They do not show how many players are affected or why the crash happens. Arrowhead’s support material does not publish crash-rate figures, so no reliable percentage is available.

A hardware upgrade is only worth considering if your PC falls below the minimum requirements. An SSD is recommended in the specifications, but Arrowhead does not present it as a crash fix.
