How long should a fully charged Switch last?
Nintendo’s approximate runtimes vary by model. They are ranges, not guarantees: the software application and functions in use affect actual battery life. Check the hardware model rather than relying on appearance alone.

What to check if your play time seems unusually short
1. Measure from a full charge
Nintendo estimates about three hours to fully charge a console that is powered off or in sleep mode; it takes longer while the system is in use. Charge it fully, then note how long it lasts during your usual play. A rough comparison is more useful than judging by the battery icon alone.

2. Compare with the range for your exact model
Some variation is expected within the published range because games and functions differ. If your fully charged system runs for less than the low end of its model’s range, Nintendo’s guidance is to have it serviced rather than assume a setting or game is the cause.
3. Consider battery age
Lithium-ion batteries gradually lose runtime as they are used. Nintendo says that after about 800 charge cycles, a console may provide about 80% of the runtime of a new system; this is an approximate aging reference, not a guaranteed lifespan or a precise failure threshold. Nintendo describes gradual runtime loss as normal.

What if the Switch will not charge properly?
A console that charges slowly, intermittently, or not at all needs a different check from one that charges fully but runs down during play. Nintendo identifies the Switch AC adapter as model HAC-002 and recommends checking the adapter and connections.
- Inspect the adapter. Confirm it is a Nintendo Switch AC adapter, model HAC-002, and check the cord and connectors for visible damage.
- Reset the adapter. Disconnect it from both the wall outlet and the console or dock for at least 30 seconds.
- Test the console directly. Connect the adapter to the console and a wall outlet, then check whether it charges.
- Try another suitable adapter if available. If the system still does not charge or hold charge, contact Nintendo service for assessment. Nintendo’s troubleshooting also includes checking that system software is current, but its guidance does not identify a particular update as a cause of battery drain.
Nintendo cautions: “Non-licensed and/or damaged AC adapters may have compatibility problems with your console.” See the Nintendo support steps for a system with no power or a blank screen and the Nintendo Australia charging guidance.

Is it the console battery or the Joy-Con?
If the controller indicator drops quickly while the console still has charge, check the Joy-Con separately. Nintendo estimates approximately 3.5 hours to charge Joy-Con and approximately 20 hours of use, depending on use. Joy-Con attached to a Switch charge when the console is connected to its AC adapter and is on or in sleep mode. On Switch Lite, a Joy-Con charging grip is needed to charge Joy-Con. If Joy-Con charge but do not hold charge, Nintendo directs owners to repair.

Can a power bank help?
A power bank can be a convenience for playing away from an outlet, but it will not repair a degraded battery or diagnose a charging fault. Nintendo Japan says it does not guarantee that commercial power banks will work with the console. Its guidance recommends current system software and, when using a commercial USB cable, a cable with a 56k resistor; Nintendo warns that an unsuitable cable may supply too little power or cause damage. Check Nintendo Japan’s power-bank guidance before relying on this option.
