It does not by itself prove that Java, a mod, Forge, or your hardware is at fault. Check the Forge profile’s latest crash report and debug.log first; those files are where the specific failure may be identified.
What Forge exit code 1 means
Forge’s support FAQ says, “Error code 1 and -1: The game crashed, refer to the log and/or crash report for details.” The number tells you the game did not launch successfully; it does not identify why. Reinstalling Forge, changing memory settings, or replacing hardware without evidence from the log can waste time or make the setup harder to diagnose.
The useful first comparison is whether the same Forge profile starts with no mods. A clean launch points attention toward the mod set or its dependencies; a crash with an empty mods folder means you should also check the Java runtime, graphics drivers, and installation setup.
Find the Forge crash report and debug log
- In the official Minecraft launcher, open Installations.
- Hover over the Forge profile that crashes and click its folder icon to open that profile’s game directory.
- Open the
logsfolder and finddebug.log. Opencrash-reportsand inspect the newest crash report, if one was created.
Forge’s FAQ directs players to these files for diagnosing exit codes. If there is no crash report, provide debug.log when asking for help; include launcher_log.txt as well if needed. You can follow the Forge support FAQ for guidance.

Check that the profile uses a compatible Java version
Java compatibility depends on the Minecraft and Forge release family. Forge publishes the following mapping in its support FAQ; match your exact versions rather than assuming the newest Java will work:

These requirements are version-sensitive and may change as Minecraft and Forge releases advance. Also check which Java executable the launcher profile actually uses: having a compatible Java version installed on the computer does not guarantee the profile is launching with it. If Forge crashes with no mods
Forge recommends checking that the correct Java version is in use and updating graphics drivers when Forge immediately crashes without mods. Follow Forge’s graphics-driver instructions rather than treating a generic “up to date” status as proof that the driver installation is working correctly.
If the crash continues with an empty mods folder, use the latest report and debug.log to narrow it down. Forge’s guidance does not make increasing RAM or reinstalling everything a general fix for exit code 1; only pursue a memory change if the error actually points to an out-of-memory problem.

Test mods without mixing profile files
If the empty profile launches but your usual setup does not, investigate mods and dependencies. Check that every mod matches the Minecraft version and loader used by the profile. CurseForge also advises selecting a compatible mod-loader version or type for the chosen Minecraft release.
Forge recommends giving modded profiles a separate game directory so their saves, configurations, and mods do not interfere with vanilla Minecraft or other profiles. In an isolated directory, remove the mods and add them back in controlled groups, checking whether the crash returns. That result can help identify a mod conflict; the log remains the best evidence for a specific failure.

What to include when asking for help
If the log does not make the cause clear, open a new thread using the Forge support forum process. Include the details needed to reproduce the setup and diagnose the failure:
- Minecraft version and Forge version
- Operating system and launcher
- Whether the crash happens with an empty mods folder
- The latest crash report and
debug.log; addlauncher_log.txtif needed
Forge’s wiki FAQ also directs players with crash problems to the support forum and asks them to post log files. Review pasted logs for account credentials or access tokens before sharing them.

When to try another launcher
A launcher-specific problem is possible, but exit code 1 alone does not establish one. In a November 2023 forum case, one player reported that trying another launcher resolved their problem after reinstalling software and changing RAM had not helped. That is one player’s experience, not evidence that switching launchers is a standard fix. Check the report and Java setup first; compare launchers only if those checks leave the installation path in question.
