Minecraft: Bedrock Edition usually keeps crashing because of an outdated or buggy build, incompatible add-ons or resource packs, low storage or memory, demanding graphics settings, a damaged local installation, or a problem isolated to one world. Start with reversible fixes: check for updates, restart the device, close background apps, check storage, disable packs, and lower video settings. Back up your worlds before clearing app data or reinstalling.
As of September 4, 2026, the latest official release page found for Bedrock is version 26.40, published August 4, 2026. Rollout can temporarily vary by platform, so check the version number at the bottom-right of Minecraft’s title screen and install any newer build available through your platform’s store. Mojang’s 26.40 changelog lists numerous stability fixes, but no update can be assumed to fix every crash.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →First, identify what “crashing” means
The correct fix depends on what Minecraft is doing:
| Symptom | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Closes before the title screen | Update, installation, platform services, storage, or device resources |
| Every world crashes | Game build, graphics settings, device resources, or installation |
| Only one world crashes | World data, an add-on, resource pack, structure, entity, or location |
| Only multiplayer or Realm loading crashes | Version mismatch, downloaded packs, storage, account, Realm, or network |
| Freezes but does not close | Memory pressure, loading trouble, or a gameplay bug |
| Launcher freezes on Windows | Launcher, Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or Gaming Services |
A genuine crash closes Minecraft to the desktop, home screen, or console dashboard. Lag, a failed sign-in, a disconnected Realm, and a multiplayer error may feel similar but require different troubleshooting. Mojang’s error-code guidance covers many connection, account, and service problems.

Try these safe fixes first
- Write down what happened immediately before the crash: launching, opening a world, changing graphics, entering a portal, opening the Marketplace, or joining multiplayer.
- Check the version number at the bottom-right of the title screen.
- Update Minecraft through the Microsoft Store, console store, Google Play, or App Store.
- Fully close Minecraft and restart the device.
- Close browsers, recording software, overlays, and other memory-heavy applications.
- Check that the device has ample free storage.
- Disable add-ons, behavior packs, resource packs, and experimental features.
- Reduce graphics settings and test again.
- Test a new world without packs.
- Back up worlds before reinstalling, clearing app data, or deleting local files.
This order follows Mojang’s general crash and lag troubleshooting guidance while keeping risky steps until last.
Did the crashes begin after an update?
If the problem started immediately after a Minecraft, Windows, console-firmware, graphics-driver, Android, or iOS update, do not assume your device suddenly failed. Bedrock hotfixes have repeatedly repaired specific launch and gameplay crashes.
- Version 26.21, published May 14, 2026, fixed a launch crash and several gameplay crashes.
- Version 26.31, published June 22, 2026, fixed gameplay crashes and a Nintendo Switch main-menu crash.
- Version 26.32, published June 25, 2026, fixed additional gameplay crashes and a freeze involving an older Book and Quill.
- Version 26.40, published August 4, 2026, addressed crashes involving structures, dimension changes, Android invite notifications, NBT data, NPC settings, Iron Golems, concrete conversion, UI interactions, graphics, and other gameplay states.
Read the relevant 26.21, 26.31, 26.32, and 26.40 notes if your symptom matches one of these categories. A platform may receive a hotfix later than another because updates require platform approval.
Disable add-ons and packs
Behavior packs, resource packs, Marketplace content, Character Creator assets, imported add-ons, and experimental features can cause or trigger crashes. That does not mean every Marketplace item is defective; the issue may be incompatible content, corrupted pack data, an older pack, or a problematic combination.
Back up the affected world first. Then:
- Create or open a plain test world with no add-ons or packs.
- If the test world works, make a copy or backup of the affected world.
- Disable the world’s behavior packs and resource packs.
- Test the world again.
- Re-enable packs one at a time, testing after each change.
- Remove or replace the pack that consistently reproduces the crash.
Do not reactivate everything at once: that removes the evidence needed to identify the cause. Mojang explicitly recommends disabling and re-adding Bedrock add-ons one at a time. A 26.2 update also fixed an add-on issue that could cause crashes or missing textures.
If Minecraft crashes before you can reach settings, do not blindly delete the Minecraft folder or clear app data. Use the platform’s supported backup or storage tools, or contact Minecraft Support for a safe recovery path.

Check storage, memory, and heat
Free storage
Low storage can interfere with world saves, temporary files, updates, Marketplace downloads, Character Creator content, and multiplayer resource-pack downloads. A game that launches successfully can still fail when loading a large world or downloading packs. Bedrock 26.40 changed how cached packs are handled during multiplayer resource-pack downloads when storage is low. Check the device’s storage settings and leave room for temporary files as well as the game itself.
Memory pressure
Close browsers, overlays, screen recorders, streaming tools, and other applications before testing. If the crash disappears after doing so, the device may be running out of available memory or processor capacity rather than suffering from a damaged world.
Heat
On phones and tablets, test Minecraft while the device is cool and unplugged. Mojang advises mobile players to unplug the device while troubleshooting because charging can increase heat. This is a diagnostic step, not a universal requirement; if unplugging changes the behavior, thermal or power-related performance limits may be involved.
Lower Bedrock’s graphics load
In Minecraft, open Settings → Video. Reduce settings, test stability, and only then restore them gradually:
Recommended Free Tools
- Lower FOV below the default 60 degrees.
- Disable Fancy Leaves, Fancy Bubbles, and Render Clouds.
- Disable FOV Can Be Altered By Gameplay.
- Use Simple Graphics Mode.
- Under Simple Graphics Options, disable Beautiful Skies and Smooth Lighting.
- If using Vibrant Visuals, lower its effects or disable it temporarily.
Mojang describes Vibrant Visuals as using the greatest amount of system resources. It can therefore expose GPU, memory, or thermal limits, but it should not automatically be blamed for every crash. The official performance guide documents these settings. Version 26.40 also included graphics-related fixes, including Android GPU and rendering issues, so update before concluding that your hardware is inadequate.
If only one world crashes
When the title screen and other worlds work, the whole installation is less likely to be the problem. Suspect world-specific packs, corrupted save data, a structure, an entity, an item, or a repeatable location.

- Crashes while loading: disable every pack attached to the world and test a copy.
- Crashes at the same location: avoid repeatedly loading or saving over the original. Work from a backup or copy.
- Crashes after one action: record the exact action, such as entering a Nether portal, using an End gateway, opening an NPC, loading a structure, or converting concrete.
- Older world crashes: test a copy rather than converting or overwriting the only original.
These are not random examples: the 26.40 notes identify crashes involving structures, deeply nested NBT data, dimension changes, NPC Advanced Settings, Iron Golem spawning, concrete conversion, and other gameplay states. They are examples of known failure categories, not a complete list of causes.
Windows PC: repair the surrounding services
Windows Bedrock relies on more components than the game alone, including the Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, Xbox app, Xbox Gaming Services, Windows, and graphics drivers.

Mojang says Xbox services deliver Minecraft updates and that the Gaming Services Repair Tool can address update, freezing, and stopping problems. Follow the Windows Launcher crash guide and Launcher update guide.
Separate a Launcher crash from a Bedrock game crash. If the Launcher opens but Minecraft closes after you select Play, prioritize the game, world, pack, and graphics tests. If the Launcher itself freezes or reports “This App Can’t Open,” use the Windows-specific repair path.

On every platform, begin with the safe first pass: update through the platform store, restart the device, check storage, close other applications where possible, disable packs, and lower graphics settings. Do not assume that a cache-clearing or app-data procedure is safe across platforms. Local worlds may be stored on the device, and uninstalling or deleting app data can remove them.
Android players should also update both Minecraft and the operating system and test while the device is cool and unplugged. The 26.40 notes include Android-specific graphics and invite-notification crash fixes. Mobile update instructions are available in Mojang’s mobile update guide.

- Plug & Play Old School Game Console: Pre-loaded with 8-bit & 16-bit nostalgic classic games — no downloads, no installations, just plug in and play. Built for retro lovers who appreciate the golden age of gaming, it faithfully recreates the original pixel-art visuals and sound of that era. Please note: the graphics reflect the authentic old school style of classic consoles, which differs from today's HD or modern AAA titles — and that's exactly the charm.
On Nintendo Switch, a crash limited to the main menu or a particular gameplay situation may correspond to a platform-specific hotfix. On PlayStation and Xbox, check for a pending game or system update and verify free storage. For any console or mobile device, use the platform’s official backup and reinstall instructions rather than deleting local data as a generic “cache fix.”
When multiplayer or Realms is the trigger
If single-player works but joining a Realm or another player’s world fails, first determine whether Minecraft actually closes. Failed joins, disconnects, sign-in errors, version mismatches, and service outages commonly leave the application open or show an error instead of producing a hard crash.
- Update every player to the same current Bedrock version.
- Test a local single-player world.
- Disable packs that the multiplayer world downloads.
- Check free storage for temporary resource-pack downloads.
- Confirm that the host or Realm is available.
- Sign out and back in.
- Check Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, or Google service status as relevant.
- On consoles, confirm the required online subscription: Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, or PlayStation Plus.
- Check the system clock, especially if sessions fail unusually.
Realms may not support older Minecraft versions, and the multiplayer connectivity guide covers version, permissions, subscriptions, and network requirements. The 26.40 notes also mention session failures when the system clock was more than a year out of date.
Reinstall only after backup
A reinstall can repair damaged application files, but it will not necessarily fix a bug in the current release, an incompatible pack, or corrupted data inside one world. Back up your worlds before uninstalling, resetting app data, or deleting local files.
Do not treat clearing a temporary cache as equivalent to deleting app data. The latter can remove local worlds, settings, and downloaded content depending on the platform. Use Mojang’s crash guidance and Windows guidance for the supported backup and reinstall sequence.
When to contact Minecraft Support
Escalate after the clean-world, pack, update, graphics, storage, and platform-specific tests fail—or sooner if Minecraft cannot open and your worlds are at risk. Include:
- Platform and device model.
- Operating-system version.
- Minecraft version and whether you are using Bedrock Preview.
- Whether every world crashes or only one.
- Whether a clean world works.
- Installed add-ons, behavior packs, and resource packs.
- The exact action immediately before the crash.
- Any error code or message.
- Steps already attempted.
- Whether the problem began after a dated game, system, or driver update.
This information distinguishes a broad installation problem from a reproducible world, pack, platform, or version issue and helps avoid destructive trial-and-error.
