6 Best Game Boy Emulators for iOS 17

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Delta is the best Game Boy emulator for most iPhone and iPad users on iOS 17 because it is easy to install from the App Store and supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. Choose SameBoy for accuracy-focused Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulation, RetroArch for advanced multi-system configuration, Provenance for a broad retro library, Manic EMU for feature breadth, or Folium for a larger Nintendo handheld collection.

One important qualification: an app’s current App Store release may require a newer version of iOS than iOS 17. Check the live listing’s Requires iOS field before installing. App Store availability, minimum OS requirements, and features can change over time.

Quick comparison

Emulator Best for GB GBC GBA Distribution Price signal Main drawback
Delta Most users Yes Yes Yes App Store in supported regions Free download; in-app purchases shown Less specialized than SameBoy
SameBoy GB/GBC accuracy and unusual hardware Yes Yes No App Store Free download; in-app purchases shown Focused on GB, GBC, and Super Game Boy
RetroArch Power users and multi-system libraries Via cores Via cores Via cores App Store Free Complex interface and iOS core limitations
Provenance Broad multi-console collections Yes Yes Yes App Store availability documented by the project Free App Store access described by the project More than a Game Boy-only user needs
Manic EMU Feature-heavy all-in-one emulation Yes Yes Yes App Store Check current listing Newer and less established
Folium Nintendo handheld breadth Yes Yes Yes App Store $2.99 in the U.S. listing Overkill for Game Boy alone

Here, “Game Boy” covers four related categories: original monochrome Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Super Game Boy, and Game Boy Advance. GBA is a separate platform, so support for GB or GBC does not automatically mean an app can run GBA games.

Delta is the easiest default recommendation. Its U.S. App Store listing includes support for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and Nintendo DS. It also offers save states, fast-forwarding, controller support, game artwork, cheat codes, and optional online-compatible Nintendo DS multiplayer.

The library-based interface is considerably less intimidating than a core-oriented frontend. You can import your own games, organize them with artwork, configure touchscreen controls, and use a Bluetooth controller for longer sessions.

Trade-offs: Delta is not the specialist choice for original GB/GBC accuracy, and its system list is narrower than RetroArch, Provenance, or Manic EMU. The official Delta guide also explains that distribution depends on location, with App Store and AltStore PAL routes presented separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iOS 17 note: Confirm the current App Store listing’s minimum iOS requirement. Availability in the U.S. App Store does not guarantee that the newest version runs on every iOS 17 device.

Verdict: Install Delta first unless you specifically need SameBoy’s GB/GBC focus or a more extensive multi-system setup.

2. SameBoy: best for Game Boy and Game Boy Color accuracy

Best for: players who care about original Game Boy behavior, display characteristics, timing, and specialized peripherals.

SameBoy is not simply another general-purpose emulator. It is built around accuracy-focused Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Super Game Boy emulation. Its advertised features include save states, gesture-based quick save/load, fast-forward, rewind, slow motion, cheat codes, shaders, and physical-controller support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SameBoy also specifically advertises emulation for the Game Boy Camera and Game Boy Printer, along with rumble and motion-control features. That makes it particularly interesting for unusual hardware, timing-sensitive games, and readers who want a closer approximation of original GB/GBC behavior.

The app description says it has no ads or tracking and mentions iCloud support for ROMs and saves in its update information. Features can be version-specific, so check the live listing rather than assuming every feature is present on every release.

SameBoy does not cover GBA, SNES, N64, or DS. For importing, the project’s iOS support page says to import a ROM file into the app, including by tapping a downloaded file in the device browser.

iOS 17 note: Verify the current minimum iOS version before downloading. An older compatible release is not guaranteed to install or run correctly on iOS 17.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Choose SameBoy when GB/GBC fidelity matters more than having one app for every retro system.

3. RetroArch: best for power users

Best for: experienced emulation users who want one configurable frontend for many systems.

RetroArch is a free, open-source, ad-free frontend and framework. Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance support is provided through cores; the official core catalog documents the broader platform ecosystem. The SameBoy core is one route for GB/GBC emulation, as described in the Libretro documentation.

Its feature set is extensive: save states, netplay, cheats, shaders, fast-forward, rewind, custom overlays, key remapping, RetroAchievements, artwork, and advanced latency controls. It is a strong option if you already maintain a multi-system collection or want detailed control over input and video output.

The cost is complexity. You must understand cores, playlists, content directories, configurations, overlays, and sometimes BIOS requirements. The iOS App Store build should not be treated as identical to desktop RetroArch. Libretro’s iOS documentation explains that code-signing and platform restrictions can affect core availability and loading.

iOS 17 note: Check both the App Store requirement and the availability of the cores you need in the iOS build. “RetroArch supports a system” does not guarantee that every desktop core or feature works on your iPhone or iPad.

Verdict: RetroArch is the most capable choice here for advanced users, but Delta is much easier for a first setup.

4. Provenance: best broad multi-console alternative

Best for: readers who want a large library spanning Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Atari, and other classic platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provenance supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, N64, DS, 3DS, GameCube, PlayStation, PSP, Saturn, Dreamcast, and additional systems according to its project materials. Its features include save states, cheats, fast-forwarding, custom controller skins, artwork, filters, RetroAchievements, and flexible importing.

The project documents importing through Files, AirDrop, Safari downloads, and WebDAV. Its FAQ describes free App Store access and the project describes itself as free and open source, without a required account, ads, or tracking when sideloaded or built from source.

That broad system list needs context. A Game Boy game is a much lighter workload than a 3DS, GameCube, Dreamcast, or PSP title, especially on an older iPhone or iPad. System support also does not promise perfect compatibility, full BIOS independence, or consistent performance across devices.

iOS 17 note: Identify the exact App Store edition and check its current minimum OS. Do not assume that a build, core, or feature documented elsewhere in the project is available in the current iOS release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Provenance is a strong Delta alternative when your library extends well beyond Game Boy.

5. Manic EMU: best feature-heavy all-in-one option

Best for: users who want many handheld and console systems, selectable cores, patching tools, and modern convenience features.

Manic EMU advertises support for multiple Nintendo and non-Nintendo systems. Its App Store listing includes Game Boy and Game Boy Color support with options to switch between mGBA and VBA-M cores, as well as GBA-related support, BIOS importing for multiple platforms, save-state improvements, fast-forward controls, RetroAchievements, an integrated ROM patcher, controller configuration, and AirPlay-related options.

The core choice can be useful when a particular game behaves better under one implementation, and the built-in patcher may help with compatible ROM hacks or fan translations. However, patch formats and game compatibility vary, so a patcher is not a guarantee that every modified game will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manic EMU is newer and less established than Delta, RetroArch, or Provenance. Its breadth can also make troubleshooting harder because the relevant core and system settings are not always obvious to a new user.

iOS 17 note: The current price and minimum iOS requirement should be checked directly in the live App Store listing. Do not assume that a current version supports iOS 17 simply because the app is listed for iPhone or iPad.

Verdict: Manic EMU is worth considering when feature breadth matters more than the simplest possible interface.

6. Folium: best for a larger Nintendo handheld library

Best for: players who want Game Boy alongside DS, 3DS, and other Nintendo handheld systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Folium supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, PlayStation 1, and ColecoVision according to its App Store listing.

It advertises save states, direct boot, game importing, artwork support, multiple cores, and compatibility with controllers including Backbone One, Nintendo Switch controllers, PlayStation controllers, and Xbox controllers. The U.S. App Store result lists a price of $2.99. Folium also warns that emulation may be slow on older devices, which matters particularly for its more demanding systems.

Folium is excessive if your only goal is playing original Game Boy games. Its paid price also makes it a weaker first choice when Delta, RetroArch, and Provenance provide free entry points. Its value improves if you specifically want DS or 3DS in the same Nintendo-focused library.

iOS 17 note: Check the current listing for the minimum OS and device requirements. More demanding systems may perform poorly even when the app installs successfully.

Which emulator should you choose?

  • Just want classic Game Boy games or Pokémon: Start with Delta. Choose SameBoy if you primarily play GB/GBC and care about accuracy-focused emulation.
  • Care about original GB/GBC behavior or unusual peripherals: Choose SameBoy.
  • Want one app for many consoles: Choose RetroArch if you are comfortable with cores and configuration; choose Provenance for a more library-oriented alternative.
  • Want GBA plus many handhelds: Delta is the easiest starting point. Manic EMU and Provenance offer broader feature or system coverage.
  • Want DS or 3DS as well: Consider Folium or Manic EMU, but keep device performance and iOS compatibility in mind.
  • Do not want to sideload: Use the official App Store editions only.

How to install and set up a Game Boy emulator safely

  1. Open the official App Store listing. Use the links above rather than an IPA mirror, certificate-signing service, enterprise download, or “modded” app page.
  2. Check the requirement first. Confirm the listing’s current Requires iOS field and make sure your iPhone or iPad model is supported.
  3. Install the app and review permissions. Grant only the access the app actually requests.
  4. Import a ROM you are legally entitled to use. Depending on the app, use Files, AirDrop, Safari’s download handoff, or the emulator’s documented importer. The emulator does not supply commercial games. Folium explicitly states that it does not provide games or system files.
  5. Select the system or core. This is automatic in some apps. RetroArch and Manic EMU may require you to choose or manage a core.
  6. Make a native in-game save. Then create an emulator save state. Keeping both is safer than relying exclusively on save states.
  7. Configure controls. Adjust the touchscreen layout, orientation, button mapping, and per-game controls. Pair a controller if you plan to play for long sessions.
  8. Test before starting a long playthrough. Check audio, suspend/resume, save states, fast-forward, controller input, and save restoration.
  9. Back up your saves. Before updating an emulator or moving a library, export or copy saves where the app supports it. Cloud synchronization is app- and version-specific.

Controllers and touch controls

The leading options advertise support for external controllers, including Bluetooth MFi devices and controller families from Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. Folium specifically lists Backbone One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox controllers. Delta, SameBoy, RetroArch, and Manic EMU also document controller support in their listings or project documentation.

Compatibility is not universal. A controller may connect successfully while a particular button, motion feature, rumble function, or peripheral does not work in every emulator. Before buying hardware, check whether the app supports:

  • Bluetooth and wired connections;
  • button remapping;
  • per-game layouts;
  • portrait and landscape touchscreen overlays;
  • iPad multitasking or external display output; and
  • the special inputs required by the game you want to play.

For short sessions, touchscreen controls are adequate. A phone-mounted controller such as the Backbone One can be more comfortable for extended play, but exact hardware compatibility and pricing should be checked with the manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ROMs, BIOS files, and legality

Emulators and games are separate. These apps generally do not include commercial ROMs, and some systems may also require BIOS or other system files. Use game dumps and system files you are legally entitled to use under the laws that apply to you. Do not use this guide to find unauthorized ROM repositories, BIOS downloads, unofficial IPAs, or certificate services.

“No BIOS required” is not a universal emulator claim. For example, the Libretro SameBoy documentation says that reverse-engineered Game Boy and Game Boy Color boot ROMs are built into that core. That fact should not be generalized to every RetroArch core or every system supported by a multi-system app.

Important limitations on iOS 17

App Store availability is not the same as iOS 17 compatibility

An App Store listing only establishes that an app is distributed through Apple’s store in that region. The current release may require iOS 18 or later, while an older compatible version may be unavailable, unsupported, or unable to install. Always check the live listing and your exact device before committing to an emulator.

App Store and sideloaded builds can differ

Sideloading may provide different builds or cores, but it adds installation and maintenance work, including certificate expiration and possible revocation. For a general iOS 17 reader, the official App Store route is usually the safer starting point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older devices may handle Game Boy but struggle with newer systems

Original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and GBA games are relatively light workloads compared with 3DS, GameCube, Dreamcast, or some PlayStation and PSP titles. A broad emulator can run Game Boy comfortably on an older device while still performing poorly with its more demanding systems.

Save states can fail

Save states are convenient but can become unusable after a core change, app update, corrupted game file, or migration to another emulator. Use the game’s native battery save as your primary long-term backup whenever possible.

ROM hacks may need extra care

RetroArch advertises soft patching, while Manic EMU advertises an integrated ROM patcher. These features can help with compatible fan translations and ROM hacks, but patch format, base ROM, core, and game compatibility all matter.

Bottom line

For most people, install Delta from the official App Store and verify that its current release supports your iOS 17 device. Choose SameBoy for specialized GB/GBC accuracy and hardware features, RetroArch for advanced configuration, Provenance for a broad retro collection, Manic EMU for a feature-heavy all-in-one app, and Folium when DS or 3DS belongs alongside your Game Boy library.

Whichever app you choose, import only legally obtained games, use official distribution channels, and test saves and controls before beginning a long playthrough.
