Minecraft usually minimizes because it is running in exclusive fullscreen and loses focus when you click an app on your second monitor. The quickest fix is to switch Minecraft to ordinary windowed mode or borderless fullscreen. In Java Edition 26.1 and newer, disable Exclusive Fullscreen if that option is available.
The fastest fix
- Save or pause your game.
- Open Minecraft’s display settings.
- Turn Fullscreen off, or disable Exclusive Fullscreen.
- Maximize or resize the resulting window so it fills your gaming monitor.
- Click Discord, your browser, OBS, or another app on the second monitor.
If Minecraft remains visible, fullscreen focus behavior was the cause. This is generally not a sign that the second monitor is defective.

Java Edition
Open Options → Video Settings. Depending on your Minecraft version, launcher, and installed client mods, look for Fullscreen, Fullscreen Mode, or Exclusive Fullscreen. Java 26.1 introduced a more explicit Exclusive Fullscreen control; current release notes also discuss fullscreen behavior alongside adaptive-sync features such as G-Sync and FreeSync (Java 26.1 notes; Java 26.2 notes).
On older vanilla Java versions, press F11 to leave fullscreen, or turn Fullscreen off through Options → Video Settings. Laptop keyboards, overlays, and custom clients can intercept F11, so the menu is the more reliable route.

Bedrock Edition for Windows
Open Settings → Video and turn Fullscreen off. Bedrock’s labels and available controls can vary between releases, so do not assume that Java’s fullscreen options or Java mods apply to Bedrock. Minecraft’s support guidance is available in its video and performance settings documentation.
Why clicking another monitor makes Minecraft disappear
Clicking an application on the second monitor makes that application the active window. Minecraft then loses focus. With exclusive fullscreen, the game may take control of the display rather than behaving like an ordinary resizable Windows window. When focus moves elsewhere, Windows or the game can relinquish that fullscreen surface, causing Minecraft to minimize or briefly change display modes.

Those reports show that Minecraft has experienced recurring fullscreen and focus problems, but they do not prove that every current version has one identical bug.

Borderless mode normally prevents minimization, but it is not a guarantee against driver, overlay, launcher, or mod conflicts. It also does not necessarily prevent Minecraft from pausing, dimming, or changing input behavior when another window becomes active.

Java: what to do if there is no Borderless option
Many older vanilla Java versions offer fullscreen and windowed modes but no separate native borderless setting. In that case, use maximized windowed mode or install a compatible client-side borderless mod.
Cubes Without Borders
Cubes Without Borders is a client-side Java mod that adds borderless behavior and lists support for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt across supported Minecraft versions and operating systems. Its compatibility changes over time, so check the project page before installing.

- Download the matching Cubes Without Borders release.
- Put the mod file in the profile’s
modsfolder. - Launch the matching modded profile.
- Open Video Settings and select the mod’s Borderless mode.
- Click an application on the second monitor to test it.
Match all of the following: your Minecraft version, mod loader, loader version requirements, and other client mods. A mod that supports Fabric for one release may not support Forge, NeoForge, or a different Minecraft release.
If Sodium or a Sodium fork is installed and the third Borderless choice does not appear, use the project’s documented method for accessing vanilla video settings. Depending on the supported version and interface, that may involve Ctrl + Shift + P. This is a mod-specific shortcut, not a universal Minecraft command.

If the mod’s Windows mode still behaves incorrectly, consult its documentation for the alternate minecraft:windowed and windows:windowed modes. Its --borderless startup flag is an advanced launcher-specific option and is not necessary for ordinary setup.
Other Java options include Borderless Fullscreen, Borderless Window for its listed Forge and NeoForge versions, and Borderless Mining for supported older versions. Do not install one without checking its exact loader and Minecraft compatibility.

Check Windows’ monitor configuration
Windows display settings can fix Minecraft opening on the wrong screen, but changing monitor numbers or the primary display usually does not convert exclusive fullscreen into borderless mode.
- Open Settings → System → Display.
- Select Identify to confirm which physical screen is Display 1 and Display 2.
- Under multiple-display options, choose Extend these displays.
- Set the monitor you use for Minecraft as the primary display if the game repeatedly launches elsewhere.
- If necessary, press Windows + P and choose Extend.
Microsoft documents these monitor arrangement and projection controls in its Windows multi-monitor guidance.

If Minecraft still minimizes
Confirm that the game is genuinely borderless
A setting called “borderless” in a client or Sodium fork may not be using the same implementation as a dedicated borderless mod. Test ordinary windowed mode first. If windowed mode works but the apparent borderless mode does not, the problem is likely the client, mod, or fullscreen implementation rather than the monitor.

- Disable shaders and client-side fullscreen or window-management mods.
- Temporarily disable Discord, Xbox Game Bar, OBS, Medal, and GPU overlays.
- Test a clean Minecraft profile.
- Update the graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer.
- Use Alt + Tab to restore Minecraft if it disappears.
- Try Windows + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows + Shift + Right Arrow to move the active window between displays.
Alt + Enter may change display mode in some clients, but it is not a guaranteed Minecraft command.
Test Windows 11 graphics options
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games is designed for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed modes. It is not the primary fix for Minecraft minimizing, but it can be worth testing after switching modes.
Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics. From there, you can adjust the global setting or configure Minecraft individually. Microsoft says the feature can affect presentation behavior, latency, Auto HDR, and variable refresh rate on compatible systems; results depend on the game, driver, and hardware. Check laptops and external GPUs
On a laptop, the internal screen and external monitor may be routed through different GPUs. In Settings → System → Display → Graphics, check Minecraft’s assigned GPU preference if display changes, flickering, or inconsistent performance continue. This is especially relevant when the external monitor is connected to a discrete-GPU output.

Flickering when moving between displays does not automatically mean the second monitor is causing the minimization. Test windowed mode, then borderless mode with shaders and overlays disabled. Also test HDR and variable refresh rate on and off, and temporarily match the monitors’ refresh rates. Mixed resolutions, refresh rates, HDR settings, GPU drivers, capture software, and fullscreen implementations can all contribute.
Minimizing is not the same as pausing
- Minimizes: Minecraft disappears to the taskbar or desktop.
- Pauses: Minecraft remains visible but simulation or input stops.
- Loses mouse capture: The pointer can leave the game window.
- Flickers or reloads: Often indicates a driver, overlay, display-mode, or mod interaction.
Borderless mode mainly addresses the first problem. It does not promise that Minecraft will continue simulating, accept input, or avoid dimming when another application has focus.
Can you keep true exclusive fullscreen active while using the second monitor?
There is no universal setting that makes a genuinely exclusive-fullscreen game behave exactly like a borderless window after you click another application. Your practical choices are to remain in exclusive fullscreen and accept the focus behavior, switch to windowed or borderless mode, use an overlay that does not require changing focus, or use a separate computer or capture setup for external controls.
For most two-monitor Minecraft setups, maximized windowed mode is the safest no-download solution. Java players who want a fullscreen-like appearance should use a version-compatible borderless option, while Bedrock players should use its own video settings rather than Java mods.
