Why Does My Nether Portal Take Me Somewhere Else in the Overworld?

Nether portals do not have fixed one-to-one links. Check the 8:1 X/Z conversion, unchanged Y coordinate, and nearby competing portals to correct an unexpected exit.

Your Nether portal can take you to a different Overworld portal because portals do not keep permanent, one-to-one links. When you travel, Minecraft converts your entry point’s horizontal coordinates between dimensions, then looks for a nearby portal at the destination. If another portal is the closest candidate, that one may be used instead.

How Minecraft chooses a portal destination

Portal travel uses an 8:1 scale for horizontal coordinates: X and Z are divided by 8 when moving from the Overworld to the Nether, and multiplied by 8 when traveling from the Nether to the Overworld. The Y coordinate is not scaled. Minecraft Wiki’s Nether portal mechanics reference describes the coordinate conversion and destination search.

For example, an Overworld portal near X=800, Y=64, Z=-400 corresponds approximately to Nether X=100, Y=64, Z=-50. This is a coordinate calculation, not a guarantee of where the game will place an exit: Minecraft checks for existing portals near the converted destination and can select a closer candidate. Height matters too, so a portal at a different Y level may be favored.

How to find and fix the wrong link

  1. Record the intended Overworld portal’s coordinates. Note X, Y, and Z using your edition’s coordinate display.
  2. Calculate the approximate Nether counterpart. Divide the Overworld X and Z values by 8; keep Y unchanged.
  3. Check the Nether portal’s actual position. Compare all three coordinates with the calculated position. A substantial horizontal or vertical difference can make another portal a closer candidate.
  4. Look for competing portals near the converted destination. Check for portals at different heights as well as those at similar X and Z coordinates. An old or discovered structure can also be relevant: Minecraft describes ruined portals as incomplete obsidian frames that need additional obsidian to activate (Minecraft: Building Blocks: Ruined Portal).
  5. Move or remove the competing portal, or rebuild the intended counterpart closer to the calculated location. Then test the route in both directions; a link that works one way is not necessarily evidence that the return trip will use the portal you expect.
  6. If Minecraft creates a new exit, inspect the destination area again. A new portal can be generated when no existing portal is found in the search region, according to the mechanics reference.

Why exact portal ranges depend on edition and version

The search area for existing portals is not identical across editions and versions. The Minecraft Wiki portal tutorial notes that Java Edition behavior changed in version 1.16.2. Its mechanics reference describes Java search areas of 257×257 blocks in the Overworld and 33×33 blocks in the Nether, with the full map height considered. These are community-maintained reference details, not an official algorithm specification, and should not be assumed to apply to Bedrock or every version.
