A DUALSHOCK 4 can lose charge quickly because its rechargeable battery has aged, because use and environment affect battery life, or because the controller is not charging reliably. Sony says charge duration decreases with repeated use and age, but its official sources do not set a universal gameplay-hours benchmark. Check the battery indicator and charging connection first; if the problem continues, try Sony’s reset steps and consider service.
Why does a PS4 controller battery drain quickly?
Battery age and repeated use
Battery wear is a likely explanation for a controller that once lasted longer between charges. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 support page and its 2016 CUH-ZCT2 instruction manual state that charge duration gradually decreases with repeated use and age. Sony does not specify a replacement interval or a universal runtime threshold.
Usage and environment
Battery life also varies with how the controller is used and the conditions in which it is used and stored. Sony says charging may be less effective outside 10 °C–30 °C. That range concerns charging effectiveness; it does not mean ordinary play outside it automatically damages the controller. See the PlayStation support guidance and the CUH-ZCT2 manual.
Charging may be unreliable
If the battery indicator does not rise while the controller is connected, the cable or USB source may be the issue. Sony recommends a USB-standard cable and notes that some devices may not charge the controller. This is worth checking, but a charging fault is not the explanation for every fast-drain complaint.

Controller features
Vibration can be disabled in the PS4 settings. Sony also says the light bar cannot be completely switched off, though developers can adjust its color and brightness. The official sources reviewed do not quantify the runtime difference from changing these settings, so treat turning vibration off as a test rather than a guaranteed fix.
How long should a PS4 controller battery last?
Sony does not publish a universal gameplay-runtime figure in the official sources reviewed. Its support page says a fully depleted DUALSHOCK 4 takes about two hours to charge; that is charging time, not an estimate of how long it should last during play. The PlayStation FAQ published October 30, 2013 describes battery life as similar to the DUALSHOCK 3 but does not give a number of hours.
Sony’s 2016 European CUH-ZCT2 manual lists a 1,000 mAh battery capacity for that controller revision. Check the model before applying that specification to a different DUALSHOCK 4 revision; capacity alone also does not establish a playtime figure.

How do I check if my PS4 controller is charging?
- Hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu and check the battery icon. Sony says the icon blinks while the controller is charging.
- Connect the controller to the PS4 with its USB cable. It can charge while the console is on or in rest mode.
- If the indicator does not show charging or the level does not increase, try a USB-standard cable and a different suitable USB source. Sony notes that some devices may not charge the controller.
- For a fully depleted controller, allow about two hours for a full charge, according to Sony’s current US support page.
What settings can help reduce battery use?
On PS4, open Settings > Devices > Controllers. You can turn vibration off to see whether it makes a practical difference for your play sessions. This gives up vibration feedback; Sony does not provide a measured runtime gain for the setting. The light bar cannot be completely disabled through the described controls.

What should I do if it still loses charge quickly?
Reset the controller
If charging or controller operation remains abnormal, follow Sony’s reset procedure from its DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting page:
- Turn off and unplug the PS4, then disconnect the controller.
- Use a paper clip to press and hold the small reset button on the back of the controller for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS4 with the official USB cable and press the PS button to pair it again.
Consider wear or qualified service
If the controller still loses charge rapidly after checking the connection and resetting it, battery wear becomes more plausible. Sony says battery removal should be performed only by skilled service personnel. Contact PlayStation Repairs or support for an unresolved fault rather than treating a battery swap as a routine user procedure. If the battery is damaged or leaking, stop using the controller and contact technical support.
