Most Warzone glitching on PC comes from a short list of causes that Activision names in its own troubleshooting material: a first-boot shader preload that was interrupted, background utilities that conflict with the game, damaged game files, antivirus software blocking the game folder, and outdated Windows or graphics drivers. Work through those first, in that order, because they are low-risk and cover the most common problems. Stutter, frame-rate drops and lag tuning are a separate category. The advice for those comes from third-party guides, not from Activision, and it is less consistent.
Start with the first boot: let shader preloading finish
Warzone builds and stores shader data the first time it runs. Activision’s PC troubleshooting page says this step is an important part of the first boot and must be allowed to complete before you play. Leaving the main menu while preloading is still running stops the process and can cause performance problems that persist afterward. If you are seeing hitching or erratic behaviour right after a major update or a fresh install, return to the main menu, leave the game idle, and let the process finish before you judge whether the problem is still there.
Close the utilities that Activision says conflict with the game
Activision’s PC page names three utilities specifically: NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner and Razer Cortex. Its guidance is to disable them while playing because they can conflict with Call of Duty: Warzone. The company also gives a broader warning in its crash documentation. Input remapping software, overlays and recording software may interfere with gameplay or disrupt the boot process even when they are not running at the time you launch or play. If crashes persist, Activision recommends uninstalling these categories of software rather than only disabling them.
If the problem continues after that, Activision suggests a clean boot with only essential programs running. Razer Synapse users are also told to update to the latest driver.

Verify game files
Activision recommends verifying the integrity of the game files through the launcher you use.
On Steam
- Open your Steam library and right-click Call of Duty: Warzone.
- Choose Properties, then select the Installed Files tab.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for the scan to finish.
Steam may report that one or more files failed to verify. Steam’s own wording for this case says: “This is normal for most Steam games. The files that fail to verify are local configuration files that should not be replaced as part of this process. You can safely ignore this message.”
On Battle.net
- In the Battle.net app, select Call of Duty: Warzone and open its settings through the Manage option.
- Open the Files tab.
- Click Verify and Repair.
The Battle.net steps come from an Activision general guide excerpt rather than a detailed launcher page, so the menu names may shift between app updates. If the labels differ on your version, look for the file-verification command in the same game settings area.

Add the game folder to your antivirus exceptions
Activision recommends adding the entire Call of Duty: Warzone game folder to your antivirus exception list if you run antivirus software. Excluding only the executable is not what the company describes; the advice is to exclude the whole folder. Add the exception in your security software’s own settings, and check the folder path in your launcher’s install location if you are unsure where it is.

Keep Windows and graphics drivers current
Activision says the latest Windows 11 version greatly improves NVIDIA stability and recommends keeping Windows fully updated. Its PC page also lists recommended driver versions for NVIDIA, AMD and Intel hardware. Those version numbers change with each driver release and were not reliably captured here, so check the live page for the current recommendations before you install anything. Activision’s support pages do not show a publication date, which is another reason to confirm the numbers yourself.
Use the vendor’s own driver tool or installer for your GPU, and perform a clean install if the previous driver was installed over an older version and problems started after an update.

Collect a crash log before you contact support
If the game still crashes after the steps above, Activision’s process is to generate a crash log and submit it through its PC crash form.
- Open the Warzone install folder and run CrashLogGenerator.exe.
- Find the error log zip that the tool creates in your Documents folder.
- Upload that zip to a file hosting service such as Google Drive and copy the sharing link.
- Submit the link through Activision’s PC crash form.
Stutter, FPS drops and lag: what third-party guides say
Stuttering is a different problem from a crash. It is a short, repeated pause in motion, usually caused by the GPU or the system waiting on data. Rubberbanding and high ping are different again. Activision’s official material does not confirm the tuning advice below, so treat it as a set of hypotheses to test on your own hardware, one change at a time.
Season updates can change shaders and settings
Some third-party guides say that season updates can rebuild shader and texture caches, change server routing and alter how graphics settings behave. If stutter starts after a season launch, the update itself may be the cause. Letting the shader rebuild finish, as described above, is the first step to rule out.

Texture resolution and VRAM
One guide advises lowering Texture Resolution when VRAM usage is above 80 percent, because the High setting can exceed the video memory of 8 GB cards and smaller GPUs. This is a rule of thumb from one guide, not a measured threshold, so check your own VRAM usage in an overlay or monitoring tool while you play and see whether the stutter lines up with the memory filling up.
On-Demand Texture Streaming
Another guide calls disabling On-Demand Texture Streaming the single most effective fix for Warzone-specific stutter. That is a strong claim from a single source. Test it by changing one setting, playing the same match or area, and comparing the result. Turn it back on if it does not help, because the setting exists to reduce memory use.
Overlays and background hooks
Third-party guides name Discord, GeForce Experience or the GeForce App, Steam and RGB lighting software as possible causes of hitching. These tools inject themselves into games, which is why Activision’s warning about overlays applies here too. Disable them one at a time to find the one that matters.

Network lag is not stutter
One guide says rubberbanding and high ping are network-side problems. If your character snaps back while your frame rate stays steady, look at the connection rather than the graphics settings. The suggested fixes are a wired connection, Quality of Service (QoS) rules in your router, and stopping background downloads and streams on the same network.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Settings that guides disagree about
Two popular tweaks conflict between sources. Neither is part of Activision’s guidance, and no published measurement settles them.
| Setting | One third-party claim | Conflicting claim | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) | Disable it on older GPUs. | Enabling it can recover 10–15 FPS without a hardware upgrade. | Conflicting; single third-party claims each; test on your system. |
| Resizable BAR | Some AMD chipset users report that disabling it stopped Warzone stutter. | Not stated in Activision guidance. | Anecdotal; no supporting source cited. |
If you change either setting, make one change at a time, record the result, and revert it if the game does not improve. Changes to these settings affect the whole system, not only Warzone.
Console notes
Activision’s console guidance is older and its date is not confirmed. On Xbox, the company advises clearing the console cache and resetting the MAC address if crashes continue. On PlayStation, it advises keeping the system software updated and deleting old files and game data. The Warzone Caldera known-issues page is named for an earlier version of the game and is probably out of date, so do not use it as current guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When the official steps do not help
If glitching continues after you have let shaders finish, closed the named utilities, verified files, added the antivirus exception and updated drivers, collect the crash log and check Activision’s known-issues list for your platform. A problem that is still present after all of those steps is more likely to be a game or server issue than a local setup problem, and a crash log is the most useful thing you can send.
Season patches and driver releases change frequently, so the specific numbers in the guidance above should be checked against the live pages before you rely on them.
