Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your Xbox controller turns off while connected by USB, the battery is not automatically to blame. A loose or faulty cable, USB port or host connection, battery pack, or controller fault can cause similar symptoms. Start by testing the cable and USB connection; compare batteries only if your controller uses them.
What can make a plugged-in controller turn off?
The symptom alone does not identify the cause. The cable may be loose or damaged, the USB port or host connection may be unreliable, or the controller may have a problem. If you use a rechargeable battery pack, that pack is another possibility. Test one variable at a time so you can tell which change affects the shutdown.
How to troubleshoot it
1. Reseat the cable and try another one
- Unplug the cable from both the controller and the console or PC, then reconnect both ends firmly.
- Try a known-good cable with the connector that fits your controller. Microsoft’s Xbox One Play & Charge Kit instructions recommend checking that the cable is secure at both ends and trying a different cable; they also note a cable can develop a short or be susceptible to interference. Read Microsoft’s Xbox One Play & Charge Kit instructions.
- For troubleshooting, connect directly rather than through a hub or adapter. If the controller turns off when the cable or controller is gently moved, treat that as evidence of an intermittent connection. Try another cable before concluding the controller port is damaged.
2. Try another USB port or host
Connect the controller directly to a different USB port. If possible, test it on another console or PC as well. If the problem occurs only with one port or host, that comparison points toward the connection or host rather than proving a controller fault. Microsoft’s general Windows USB guidance lists insufficient USB power and limited port functionality as possible causes of USB-device problems; it is not a controller-specific diagnosis. See Microsoft’s general USB guidance for Windows.
3. Compare the battery setup, if applicable
If your controller uses removable batteries, make sure they are seated correctly. If you use a rechargeable pack and it does not hold charge, the pack may have worn out. Where supported, compare with AA batteries or another pack. Microsoft’s Xbox One Play & Charge Kit instructions recommend this comparison. Standard rechargeable AA batteries do not charge inside the controller; charge them using the method recommended by their manufacturer.

Do not assume every Xbox controller needs a battery pack to work over USB. Microsoft’s cited instructions say the Xbox One controller can be used to play while its batteries charge, but that guidance is specific to the Xbox One Play & Charge Kit.
4. Consider software or controller hardware after connection tests
If the issue persists with a known-good cable on multiple ports or hosts, software or a controller hardware fault becomes more plausible. A secondary iFixit guide includes firmware updating and physical damage among later troubleshooting possibilities, but the official Xbox pages available for this topic did not expose their instructions. Avoid relying on an unverified menu path or assuming a specific firmware bug is responsible. See iFixit’s Xbox One Wireless Controller troubleshooting guide.

Controller generations use different connectors, so check the port on your specific controller before buying a cable. The cited Xbox One Play & Charge Kit uses a USB-to-micro-USB cable; do not assume that applies to every Xbox controller. If you shop for an “Xbox controller USB cable,” confirm the connector and compatibility in the product details. A rechargeable pack or Play & Charge Kit is worth considering only if battery comparisons or charging behavior point to a worn pack—not as the first response to a controller shutting off while cabled.
