Reporting in 2021 said Sony rejected a sequel pitch amid the original game’s mixed critical reception and lengthy development. Former director Jeff Ross later argued that the game sold well, while also describing how its final development cost rose substantially beyond its starting budget. Bend Studio has since said it is making a new IP. The 2025 remaster brought the original game back to PS5, but it is not confirmation of a sequel.
Was Days Gone 2 cancelled, or was it only pitched?
A sequel pitch existed: in 2021, former Days Gone director Jeff Ross confirmed he had worked on one. He described a proposal for a shared universe with co-op play, but declined to confirm the sequel’s official status. Video Games Chronicle reported Ross’s comments alongside Bloomberg’s report that Sony rejected the proposal.

That account supports saying the pitch was rejected; it does not support saying Sony formally announced that Days Gone 2 was cancelled. The public reporting describes the decision, but Sony has not issued a definitive explanation in the cited sources.
What reasons were reported for rejecting the pitch?
Mixed critical reception and a long development
Bloomberg’s reported rationale, summarized by VGC and TechRadar, was the original game’s mixed critical reception and lengthy development. This is press reporting about Sony’s decision, not a public statement from Sony confirming its reasoning.

Development costs were also a concern in Ross’s account
Ross said the first Days Gone began with a large budget but ended at “a much higher number,” which he thought would likely become the starting point for a sequel’s budget. No official sequel budget figure has been published in the cited sources. His comments provide context for the business challenge of making another game, but do not establish cost as Sony’s official reason for passing on the pitch.
Did Days Gone sell badly?
Not according to Ross’s account. In a 2022 interview with TechRadar, he said Days Gone had sold over eight million copies by the time he left Bend, with more than a million additional Steam sales afterward. Those are figures attributed to Ross; TechRadar noted that Sony had not released official sales numbers. They should not be presented as an audited or company-confirmed total.

Ross described the game as commercially successful while acknowledging its mixed reviews and saying the critical response was harsh. Sales and reviews measure different things: his sales claim challenges the idea that the game simply failed to find buyers, but it does not overturn the reported concerns about reception, development time, or cost.
What is Bend Studio working on now?
In a June 2021 PlayStation.Blog interview, then-PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst said Bend was working on “a very exciting new IP” and building on the open-world systems developed for Days Gone. He did not announce a sequel. Hulst’s interview is a public statement about the studio’s direction, not a declaration that the franchise will never return.

In June 2024, Bend community manager Kevin McAllister said the studio was working on a new IP and that real news would come from the studio. GameSpot reported the remark in response to sequel speculation. It indicates what Bend said it was working on then; it does not settle the franchise’s long-term future.

No. Days Gone Remastered launched for PS5 on April 25, 2025, with new modes and technical and accessibility enhancements. PlayStation’s announcement described it as a digital-only PS5 release and said eligible PS4 owners could upgrade for $10 USD at the time of the announcement. That price and eligibility should not be assumed to apply everywhere or remain current; check the store for your region.

- Expansive Open World Action – Exemplifying truly free-form gameplay, Days Gone offers freedom to explore, strategize and play “your way” in the vast high-desert of the Pacific Northwest. The hazardous environments, filled with carved out ridges, mountains, caves, cliffs mines and river basins, deliver a breathtaking backdrop to an equally diverse style of gameplay.
- Emergent Gameplay – Featuring fully explorable environments and dynamic AI enemies, players will rely on their own abilities to strategize, craft weapons and tools, explore the world, and engage in combat. With almost every car, building and environment searchable, Days Gone delivers emergent gameplay possibilities, making a player’s approach to combat and discovery a vital part of the experience.
- Stunning, Dynamic Graphics – Using the power of PlayStation 4 and Unreal Engine 4, Bend Studio has developed a high volume of rendering and gameplay technology to deliver an incredibly realistic open world experience. Realistic weather effects, such as rain, wind, snow and day-night cycles impact the gameplay. The game’s lighting is all real-time and reacts dynamically, the way the human iris does, as players move from one location to the next.
A remaster is a confirmed release of the existing game, not evidence that Sony has approved a sequel. No sequel announcement is established by the sources cited here.
