If your Xbox powers on but the TV stays black or says “No signal,” first check the TV input and HDMI connection—not the console’s power light. Then isolate the cable, TV port, and any device between the Xbox and screen. If those checks fail, a model-specific low-resolution startup can test for an incompatible display setting; a blank screen across multiple displays with a known-good cable may need service.
What a powered-on Xbox with no picture means
A power light or startup sound confirms only that the console is receiving power; it does not confirm that video is reaching the TV. The fault could be in the selected TV input, HDMI cable, an intermediate device, the display’s compatibility with the current output mode, or the console itself. Test one part of the path at a time rather than changing several things at once.
Check the TV input and HDMI path
- Select the connected input. Turn on the TV or monitor and choose the HDMI input where the Xbox is plugged in.
- Reseat the HDMI cable. Disconnect and reconnect it at both the console and display ends.
- Try another TV HDMI port. Select that port as the display input after moving the cable.
- Connect the Xbox directly to the display. Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, capture device, or adapter.
These checks follow Microsoft’s Series X service inspection, which verifies the display input and tests the console with an HDMI cable and display. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X service guidance asks whether the Xbox logo appears clearly during its checks.
Separate a cable or display problem from a console problem
Test with a known-good cable
Try an HDMI cable that you know works with another device. Borrowing one is a useful diagnostic before buying a replacement. A cable swap can reveal a damaged cable, but it cannot repair a damaged HDMI port or an internal console fault.

Test another screen
If possible, connect the Xbox and the known-good cable to another TV or monitor. If another device also fails on the original TV input, the display or that input deserves attention. If the Xbox stays blank on more than one display with a known-good cable, console hardware becomes more plausible—but these tests do not identify the failed component with certainty.
Try low-resolution startup for a possible display-mode mismatch
If the Xbox may be set to a resolution or display mode your screen cannot show, low-resolution startup can help you regain a picture and choose a supported setting. The button sequence varies by Xbox model, so do not assume one model’s instructions apply to another.

If the problem happens only with 4K or HDR
When the issue appears only with 4K, HDR, or another high-bandwidth display mode, check whether the TV’s selected HDMI port supports the features you want. Some TVs offer their full feature set only on particular ports; consult the TV manual or try another HDMI input. Keep the Xbox connected directly to the TV while testing, without a receiver or other device in between. This guidance addresses 4K/HDR compatibility symptoms, not every kind of blank screen. When to seek Xbox service
If the display stays blank after checking the input and connections, bypassing intermediate devices, and testing a known-good cable and another screen, contact Microsoft or an authorized repair provider for an assessment. Microsoft’s Series X service guidance includes checks for power, HDMI output, and whether the Xbox logo appears; a “no” answer to any inspection question may mean the device needs authorized service or an out-of-warranty repair order. Service availability depends on your region, so check Microsoft’s current options. Avoid opening the console or attempting board-level or HDMI-port repair as a first step.

Do not start by attempting a software update: Microsoft’s Xbox One update article describes the update menu path, but does not establish updating as a fix when there is no visible picture.
