The app may close on your PC, the stream may freeze or stutter, the session may never start, or the console itself may stop responding. For a PS Remote Play app that closes on Windows, begin with Sony’s listed PC steps. For a stream that freezes or disconnects, focus on the network path. Also confirm which product you use: PlayStation Remote Play and Steam Remote Play have different requirements, and PlayStation-specific steps should not be applied to Steam.
Identify which symptom you have
Official guidance does not establish one universal cause for every Remote Play failure. Sort your problem into one of these branches first, because each one points to different checks.

- The app closes on its own (PC). Use the PC app steps below.
- The session will not connect. Check console sign-in, Remote Play setup, and NAT type.
- The picture freezes, stutters, or disconnects. Test bandwidth, Wi-Fi conditions, and competing traffic.
- The console itself crashes. This is a separate problem from the streaming app; see the final section.
PS Remote Play closes on a Windows PC
PlayStation Support’s guide, How to troubleshoot Remote Play issues, lists these steps in order. Work through them in sequence, testing after each one.
- Restart the PC, then open PS Remote Play again.
- Delete the PS Remote Play folder in local AppData, then reinstall the app. Press Windows+R, type
%localappdata%, and press Enter. Locate the PS Remote Play folder, delete it, and install the latest version of the app. - Reinstall the latest supported x86 version of Visual C++. Sony’s exact wording is: “Reinstalling the latest supported x86 version of Visual C++ on your PC may help resolve the issue.”
- Check antivirus software. If it blocks PS Remote Play, add an exception for the app, and keep the app updated.
These are vendor recommendations. Sony does not say any single step is the cause on a given machine, so if the app still closes, record the app version, Windows version, and any error message before moving on.

The session will not connect
If the app opens but cannot start a session, work through these checks on the PlayStation side:
- Confirm the console and the client use the same PlayStation Network account.
- Confirm Remote Play is enabled on the console and that the console is online and signed in to PlayStation.
- Check that Remote Play setup and system and app updates are current.
- Test locally, near the console, before trying from another network.
- Restart or reinstall the app, and consider manual pairing on PC or Mac.
Sony says NAT Type 3, or an inability to obtain a NAT type, may prevent Remote Play. Its guidance also identifies UDP port 8572 as the port involved. If your router or firewall blocks that port, the session will fail to start even though the app itself is working. Sony additionally notes that some games and concurrent features are incompatible with Remote Play, so a title-specific failure may not be a crash at all.
The stream freezes, stutters, or disconnects
This is usually a network problem rather than a software fault, and it is the most common case for a stream that disconnects mid-session.
Check bandwidth
Sony states that Remote Play needs at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance. These are Sony’s own thresholds. Its guide does not display a publication date, so confirm them on the page before relying on them. Pause large downloads and streaming on other devices, and test the connection on both the console and the client.

Choose a better connection
Sony suggests a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for PC or Mac clients, and recommends a wired connection where possible. A wired test is useful for isolating instability in your home network. It will not fix a software crash that happens regardless of streaming conditions.
Use the Steam performance overlay
If you use Steam Remote Play, the performance overlay is the right diagnostic tool. Steam Support explains that large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate highly variable network time, and usually coincide with stuttering or freezing. Steam also recommends reducing wireless interference, lowering stream quality or bandwidth, prioritizing network traffic, and updating router firmware where relevant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PlayStation and Steam compared
The two products use different diagnostics and network rules. Use this table to avoid applying the wrong fix.
| Item | PlayStation Remote Play | Steam Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Main troubleshooting guide | PlayStation Support, “How to troubleshoot Remote Play issues” | Steam Support Remote Play pages |
| Performance diagnostic | Bandwidth test and Wi-Fi or wired comparison | Performance overlay; watch for cyan network-time spikes |
| Bandwidth figures | At least 5 Mbps upload and download; at least 15 Mbps recommended (Sony’s stated thresholds) | No numeric minimum stated in the Steam guidance reviewed; Steam suggests lowering stream quality or bandwidth if needed |
| Ports | UDP 8572 (Sony guidance) | UDP 27031 and 27036; TCP 27036 and 27037 |
| Network restrictions | NAT Type 3, or no obtainable NAT type, may prevent Remote Play | Public, workplace, school or university, guest, captive-portal, and client-isolated networks generally prevent connection |
Do not use the Steam port list to troubleshoot a PlayStation connection, or the reverse.

When the console itself crashes
A console crash is a different problem from a PC app closing or a stream dropping. The Sony guidance reviewed for this article does not give a dedicated fix for console crashes, so do not assume the PC steps above will resolve it. Record what you were doing when the console stopped, and check for pending system and app updates. If the problem recurs, contact PlayStation Support with the details you recorded.
What to record before escalating
Support can only narrow a problem when it has specifics. Note the platform (PlayStation or Steam), the failure type (app closes, no connection, freeze or stutter, console crash), the exact error message, the app version, the operating system version, and whether the failure repeats on another supported client or on a different network. A failure that follows the PC rather than the network points to the app; one that follows the network points to your connection.
Sony’s guide also states that its Remote Play-related instructions and figures should be rechecked against the current page, since the guide does not show a date, so verify version-sensitive steps before following them.
Remote Play crashes are rarely random. Identifying the failure type first saves time and prevents the wrong fix from being applied.
