A “relaunch the game” message is a symptom, not a diagnosis: it can appear during startup, after a crash, or while loading a save. Note exactly when it appears and copy any error code. If you use mods or custom content, test with them disabled first; if the problem remains, repair the game files and then try a clean Sims 4 user-folder test. These steps help narrow down the cause but do not guarantee a particular fix.
First, identify when the message appears
Players have reported wording such as “telling me to relaunch my game” and “It is recommended that you relaunch the game.” Those reports concern different situations, so the phrase alone does not identify one standard error or cause. [c003] [c004]
- At startup: The game may fail before reaching the main menu.
- After briefly opening: It may be crashing and then showing a relaunch prompt.
- While loading one save: The issue may be tied to that save or to content used in it.
Write down the exact message and any error code, and note which of these situations fits. EA’s general EA app guidance also covers launch and app errors, including service-status and connection checks. [EA app error help]
Test without mods or custom content
If you have installed mods or custom content (CC), start here—especially if the issue began after a game update or after adding content. EA says it disables mods during updates because previously working mods can cause problems after an update; check with each creator for compatibility with the current game version. - Close The Sims 4.
- Move the Mods folder out of the Sims 4 user folder, or use the game’s option to disable custom content and mods if available.
- Launch the game and test the affected save in Live Mode, following EA’s mod-check guidance.
- Do not save a test session if content is missing or the game state has changed. EA warns that saving and exiting before re-enabling custom content can remove that content from the saved game.
A similar EA Forums report linked a relaunch message to newly added mods; the player said disabling them stopped the issue. That forum’s community solution also suggests deleting localthumbcache.package and testing a new save. Treat this as a report-specific lead, not an official diagnosis or a guaranteed fix. If the game works with mods disabled
Check the creators’ pages for versions compatible with the current update, then restore updated mods gradually and test between batches. This helps identify a problematic item without assuming all mods are at fault. Keep a backup of saves and custom content before changing folders.

Repair or verify the game files
If the message still appears with mods disabled—or you do not use mods—repair the installation before trying more involved workarounds. An EA Forums troubleshooting thread describes “failed to launch” as a catch-all message for different problems and recommends repairing the game. [EA Forums troubleshooting thread]
- EA app: Open your game library, select The Sims 4, choose Manage, then Repair.
- Steam: Open the game’s properties and use Steam’s option to verify the integrity of the installed files.
Launcher labels and locations can change. If your screen differs, use the launcher’s current repair or file-verification option rather than deleting game files manually.

Try a clean Sims 4 user-folder test
If repair does not help, a clean user-folder test can show whether files in your Sims 4 user folder—such as mods or saves—are involved. A community troubleshooting post recommends this as a diagnostic step, not as proof that user data is always the cause. [EA Forums user-folder troubleshooting post]
- Close the game and launcher.
- Back up your Sims 4 user folder, including saves and custom content.
- Rename or move the folder so the game creates a fresh one when launched.
- Test the game before restoring files. If it works, copy backed-up files back in stages and test after each stage to isolate what changes the result.
Do not discard the original folder: it may contain saves or custom content you want to keep. If the clean folder changes nothing, that test has not established user data as the cause.

If the EA app itself is failing
When the EA app will not launch or appears to be the source of the problem, use EA’s current app troubleshooting guidance to check service status, connection issues, and other app errors. If its documented steps do not resolve the problem, EA provides the Error Reporter for submitting a report. [EA app error help]
