A “buy” prompt on Xbox does not, by itself, prove you never owned the game. First check that you’re signed in to the account that bought it, confirm the exact Modern Warfare title and edition in your order history, and then install it from your owned-games library. The right steps depend on whether you mean Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II, or Modern Warfare III—and whether your copy is digital or on disc.
Why the prompt can appear
Modern Warfare is a series, not one Xbox entitlement. A purchase for one release or edition does not establish ownership of another, and owning a console version does not automatically grant the PC version. A prompt can also appear when you are signed in to a different account from the one that made the purchase or when the game is not installed through the library associated with that ownership.
There is no single confirmed cause for every Xbox buy prompt. A Microsoft Q&A report from November 2025 describes Modern Warfare III appearing as owned in the Xbox PC app while still prompting its user to purchase it; that is an individual report, not proof of a universal Xbox-console issue. Check your account and purchase before paying again
- Identify the exact game. Check whether you mean Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, or another release, and note the edition, such as a Cross-Gen Bundle.
- Sign in to the purchasing account. If someone else in your household bought the game, check which account owns it rather than assuming the account currently signed in has the same entitlement.
- Review Microsoft order history. Look for the matching title and edition on the account you expect to own it. A game showing up in a different app or platform is not a substitute for checking the Xbox purchase record.
- Compare platform and edition. A console purchase does not automatically include the PC version. Make sure the prompt is for the same release, edition, and platform as the confirmed purchase.
If the order is not on the account you are checking, verify other household accounts or the original purchase record before concluding that you need to buy the game.

Install Modern Warfare II or III from your Xbox library
For Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III, Activision’s Xbox setup instructions use the owned-games library. On the console, open My games & apps → See all → Full library → All owned games, select the matching title, then choose Install all.

These steps document where to install those two titles; they do not establish that a missing installation is the cause of every purchase prompt. If the game is absent from All owned games, return to the account and order-history checks rather than treating the library view alone as proof that you never bought it.

If you own a disc
Disc ownership follows a different path from a digital purchase. For Modern Warfare II and III, Activision says disc owners need the Call of Duty experience installed to install the game. Use the correct disc for the title and edition, and keep it inserted when playing. Do not buy a replacement disc until you have confirmed which release and console generation your existing copy is for.
Check the current installation, not an old pack list
Activision says Modern Warfare II and III have moved outside the Call of Duty experience as standalone titles, while its setup pages still describe cross-launching through that experience and installing each title separately. The Modern Warfare II page also notes removal of legacy files in 2025. As a result, old screenshots or instructions naming particular content packs may not match the current setup.

On Xbox, open the game’s Manage game and add-ons view to inspect what is currently installed. Follow the setup guidance for the exact title instead of assuming that another Modern Warfare release’s add-ons apply. The repurchase troubleshooting text on Activision’s setup pages addresses PlayStation; it is not an Xbox-specific fix.

Contact Xbox Support rather than making a duplicate purchase as the first response. Have the purchasing account, order confirmation, exact Modern Warfare title and edition, Xbox generation, and any displayed error ready. The available Microsoft Q&A reply recommends checking order history and contacting support when a purchase is confirmed, but it does not guarantee a particular remedy.
