DOOM: The Dark Ages puts the Slayer in an earlier chapter of his story, but its version of the character also has a deliberately re-envisioned look. The available official material explains the timeline and the design direction; it does not establish that he stopped aging, give him a canonical numerical age, or identify a lore event that changed his face.
Why does the Slayer’s face look different?
The clearest explanation is a combination of story placement and visual redesign, not a confirmed change to the Slayer’s biology. Bethesda describes DOOM: The Dark Ages as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal on its official game page. PlayStation Blog’s January 23, 2025 feature says the story begins at the start of the Slayer’s time with the Sentinels. Xbox Wire also calls the game a prequel in its January 23, 2025 Developer Direct coverage.
Separately, id Software art director Emerson Tung’s portfolio description of the character design calls it a re-envisioning for a dark sci-fi fantasy setting, while noting that it retains elements from DOOM (2016) and Eternal. That is a stated art-direction rationale, not an in-universe explanation for a change to the Slayer’s face.
Is The Dark Ages Slayer younger than the Eternal Slayer?
The game’s earlier placement means the Slayer is being shown in an earlier period of the story. But a different-looking face does not, by itself, tell us how old he is in that period. Character models can change with a game’s visual direction, and Tung’s description identifies a redesign as part of the explanation.

The sources available here do not give the Slayer a canonical numerical age. PC Gamer’s report of John Romero’s comment says id Software had not invented Doomguy’s age; that is a reported creator comment, not an official age entry for the character in The Dark Ages. It also does not establish that he cannot age.
Has the game explained the face change in the lore?
Not in the cited official material. It does not identify a specific in-story event or mechanism that changed his face, nor confirm that his appearance reflects aging or de-aging. Explanations involving the Divinity Machine, the sarcophagus, Hell, or a particular stretch of time should therefore be treated as fan speculation unless supported by a direct developer statement or an in-game source.
