A mysterious voice tells him that the wish can be granted if he destroys sixteen idols and defeats the colossi tied to them. The game gives Wander a clear motive, but it makes each victory feel unsettling rather than simply heroic.
What is Wander trying to accomplish?
Wander enters an isolated land carrying the body of a young woman he has lost. He seeks a power of revival, and the colossi hold the key to it. Sony’s 2005 announcement describes his quest as an attempt to restore a loved one; the official PlayStation page for the PS4 edition gives the same broad premise.
The fuller bargain appears in PlayStation Japan’s story description: a mysterious voice promises to grant Wander’s wish if he destroys all sixteen idols in the temple. Wander resolves to find and defeat the sixteen colossi associated with those idols. The English product page states the revival premise but does not spell out the idol bargain in the same detail.
Are the colossi evil?
The official descriptions establish that Wander must defeat them to pursue his wish; they do not establish that the colossi are evil. Their ancient, imposing appearance and the solemn setting leave their nature open to interpretation. The game does not provide a simple moral label that makes killing them feel uncomplicated.
That uncertainty is part of the effect. PlayStation’s 2016 feature on the game’s creators describes the violence as a narrative device that prompts more than the satisfaction of overcoming an obstacle. Japan Studio Creative Director Keiichiro Toyama recalled the conflicting feeling of a victory: “When I killed a colossus, the thrill I experienced was unlike anything I had felt before. But that thrill was united with a horror at the atrocity I had committed, as if the weight of original sin had fallen upon me all at once.”
Toyama also offered a symbolic interpretation: the colossi can resemble earth goddesses, so killing them to restore one woman creates a stark contrast. That is a creator’s reading, not a plot fact every player has to accept.

Why does each fight feel like more than a boss battle?
The encounters are built around figuring out how to bring down beings far larger than Wander. Sony’s 2005 announcement describes a blend of puzzle solving, action, exploration, and difficult terrain. In practice, the objective is not simply to trade blows: the player explores the surroundings, climbs the colossus, and searches for a way to topple it.
That design makes the emotional tension part of play. A successful climb and a discovered weakness can feel like an achievement, while the creature’s collapse can make the same achievement feel troubling. The game asks the player to carry both reactions rather than resolving the discomfort with a definitive judgment.

What does the story leave unanswered?
Shadow of the Colossus tells the player what Wander wants and what the voice demands, but it does not settle every question about the voice’s identity, the land’s history, or the full meaning of the ending. PlayStation’s 2016 feature highlights director Fumito Ueda’s preference for storytelling through visual design, environments, and animation, with space for players to ask questions. So the bargain is explicit; the complete moral and historical explanation is not.
For context, the PS4 edition is a remake rather than a new story. PlayStation’s 2018 feature on the remake says Bluepoint aimed to preserve the original feel while updating controls and visuals; it identifies the PS4 launch date as February 7, 2018. Those are historical details about that edition, not a statement about current availability.
