Why Does YouTube Live Say My 4K 60fps Stream Has Insufficient Video Data?

YouTube’s “insufficient video data” warning is not a root-cause diagnosis. Use stream health and OBS Statistics to separate network drops from rendering or encoding pressure, then retest one change at a time.

“Insufficient video data” is a symptom, not a diagnosis: it does not by itself prove that your bitrate is too low. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages alongside OBS Statistics to see whether the problem is unstable transmission, local rendering, or encoding. YouTube’s recommended 2160p60 bitrate is 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, and 50 Mbps for H.264—but a configured bitrate only helps if your connection and computer can sustain the stream.

What the warning means—and what it does not

The message tells you YouTube is not receiving a satisfactory video feed; it does not identify the failing component. A network drop, an overloaded encoder, rendering pressure, an output setting, or a delivery path can all require investigation. Avoid changing bitrate, resolution, and OBS performance settings at once: first note the health indicators and current settings so you can follow the right troubleshooting branch.

For a game stream, reproduce the problem with representative gameplay, movement, and audio. Record your output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and whether OBS sends directly to YouTube or through a relay. YouTube recommends testing before an event and choosing a quality your connection can reliably sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming guidance provides the published recommendations.

Check the 4K60 settings against YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s official live encoder table lists these incoming encoder bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps. They are codec-specific settings, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can carry the stream reliably.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Video codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

The figures are from YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026; the help page does not state a publication date. Do not apply one codec’s number to another. YouTube’s other relevant ingest settings are:

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: two-second frequency recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
  • Video codecs: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. At 2160p, the option to improve for low latency is unavailable; YouTube sets these streams to normal latency. If a setting differs from the guidance, test a correction—but still use the health indicators to determine whether settings are the actual issue.

Use the indicators to choose a troubleshooting branch

What you see Likely area to investigate Useful next test
Network-dropped frames or unstable transmission Upload capacity, network stability, or the delivery path Check sustained upload stability against the configured bitrate, pause competing uploads, and reduce data demand if needed. If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, try wired Ethernet as a network test.
Encoding lag or an encoding-overloaded message Local encoding workload Test a lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, try 30 fps.
Rendering lag GPU/rendering pressure, game load, or complex OBS scenes Limit the game’s frame rate, lower its graphics load, and simplify scenes, sources, or filters.
OBS indicators appear healthy while YouTube stream health remains poor Output settings, ingest path, relay, or a cause these indicators do not distinguish Compare settings with YouTube’s current table and, where practical, test a direct, stable path. Further diagnostics are needed to identify the individual cause.

These indicators guide diagnosis; none proves a unique cause on its own. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance explains how GPU rendering work and local encoding overload can affect output. The OBS article is dated June 12, 2021, so use it for the general performance distinction and check current YouTube settings separately.

If transmission is unstable

Test sustained capacity, not a momentary speed peak

Compare your configured bitrate with the YouTube recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test upload capacity under conditions similar to the event. A speed test can help assess upload bitrate, but competing household or game downloads and uploads may affect what the stream can sustain. YouTube’s guidance is to choose a quality that can be delivered reliably, rather than treating the recommended encoder bitrate as proof that your line is sufficient.

Reduce demand and isolate the path

  • Pause other uploads or high-bandwidth transfers and retest.
  • If transmission still drops, reduce the configured bitrate or output quality enough to test a sustainable feed.
  • If you suspect Wi-Fi instability, try wired Ethernet. This tests the network connection; it will not fix rendering or encoding overload.
  • If OBS sends to a relay or multistream service, check both the OBS-to-relay feed and the relay’s onward path. A relay adds another point to inspect, but it is not automatically the cause.

If OBS shows rendering or encoding pressure

OBS needs GPU time to render and composite scenes. Game load, complex scenes, resource-heavy sources, or filters can compete for that time; local encoding can also fall behind. For these indicators, focus on the computer workload rather than the internet connection:

  • Limit the game’s frame rate and reduce graphics settings to free GPU capacity.
  • Reduce the stream’s output resolution or frame rate; if 60 fps is failing, test 30 fps.
  • Simplify OBS scenes and remove or reduce resource-heavy sources and filters.

These changes address local rendering or encoding pressure. They do not increase upload capacity, so they are not a network remedy.

Run a controlled retest

  1. Write down or save your current output settings. Note OBS Statistics and the exact YouTube stream-health messages.
  2. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using gameplay movement and audio representative of the planned stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
  3. Choose the branch indicated by the diagnostics: transmission, rendering, or encoding.
  4. Change one relevant setting, repeat the same test, and compare the indicators. This makes it easier to tell whether that change helped.
  5. During the event, monitor stream health and review any new messages.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than diagnosing an active OBS game stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and is not a tool for correcting an active OBS-to-YouTube encoder feed. Start your free StreamNeo day.
