When the other Bulbasaur evolve into Ivysaur, Ash’s Pokémon chooses not to follow. The episode’s point is that the choice belongs to Bulbasaur—and Ash ultimately accepts and defends that choice.
What happens in “Bulbasaur’s Mysterious Garden”?
EP051 centers on a gathering where Bulbasaur evolve into Ivysaur. Ash’s Bulbasaur watches but refuses to evolve along with them. Its refusal brings it into conflict with the gathering’s Venusaur, and Ash steps in to protect it.
Misty notes that evolving could let Bulbasaur take part in the garden’s display. Even after seeing what evolution might enable, Bulbasaur still declines. Ash recognizes that he has not considered how Bulbasaur feels, apologizes, and supports its decision. Bulbasaur remains unevolved at the end of the episode.
Why does Bulbasaur refuse?
In the story, the explanation is personal preference: Bulbasaur does not want to evolve. The episode treats that refusal as a decision Ash should respect, rather than as a problem to solve. It does not establish that Bulbasaur is afraid, physically unable to evolve, or waiting for some later trigger.
