Repeated Xbox Live disconnects on an Xbox 360 can come from the console’s Wi-Fi link, your home network, or Xbox Live itself. Work out which connection is failing before changing router settings or buying hardware: note when the disconnect happens, capture any error code, and compare Wi-Fi with a wired test if possible.
First, identify what is disconnecting
When the problem occurs, check whether the Xbox 360 still appears connected to your home network or whether it has lost network connectivity altogether. Also note whether the issue happens only in one game or session, or across Xbox Live more generally. These clues help distinguish a wireless-link problem from a broader network or service issue; they do not, by themselves, identify a specific cause.
- Write down any on-screen error code exactly as shown.
- Note when the disconnect happens and whether other devices or users on the same network are affected.
- If several devices or users have trouble at once, check current Xbox service notices. Service conditions can change, and no live outage status is established here.
Test Wi-Fi against Ethernet
If your Xbox 360 is using Wi-Fi, connecting it to the router with an Ethernet cable is a useful isolation test. Xbox Support has a dedicated Xbox 360 wired-connection guide. A wired test is not a guaranteed fix; it helps determine whether the wireless path may be involved.
- Connect the Xbox 360 to your router with an Ethernet cable, where practical.
- Use the console in the same way that usually triggers the disconnect.
- Compare the result with Wi-Fi: note whether the wired connection stays stable and whether the problem returns when you switch back to wireless.
If Ethernet is stable but Wi-Fi is not, focus on the wireless connection and the adapter in use. Xbox Support documents an Xbox 360 wireless network adapter. Because this is legacy hardware and compatibility depends on the console and accessory, confirm the console revision and exact adapter before buying one.

If both wired and wireless connections fail
If the Xbox 360 disconnects on both connection types, the issue may be beyond the Wi-Fi link, such as the router or network path. Xbox Support maintains guidance on network ports used by Xbox Live. Consult its current instructions for your setup rather than guessing at port numbers or changing router settings based on an unverified list.
Do not replace a router or other network equipment solely because Xbox Live disconnects. First compare the console’s behavior on wired and wireless connections and check whether other devices are affected. A broader network problem makes the router or internet connection more relevant, but it does not prove that any particular piece of hardware needs replacement.

Look up the exact error code
If an error code appears, search Xbox Support for that exact code and follow the page matching the console and issue. Support pages are available for 80004004, 8007274c, and 80072741. The code alone should not be treated as proof of a particular cause; use the corresponding support guidance rather than inferring a fix.
