Skipping class is officially associated with detention in The Sims 4: High School Years, and getting caught pulling pranks can have consequences—but EA’s published feature description does not give a rule or threshold for expulsion. Players have reported being expelled after repeated trouble, including being expelled again after re-enrolling, but those reports do not establish a universal cause. If it keeps happening, check your Sim’s school behavior first; if expulsion repeats immediately after re-enrollment, troubleshoot cautiously as a possible recurring state or bug.
What can get a teen Sim in trouble at school?
EA’s High School Years feature description says teen Sims can skip class and earn detention. It also describes pranks—including marking up a whiteboard, leaving a stink capsule in a locker, or tampering with the PA system—and warns that getting caught can have consequences. It does not say that skipping class or a prank by itself causes expulsion. Xbox Wire, August 2, 2022
That distinction matters: detention and consequences are documented, but the feature article does not explain an expulsion formula. It gives no confirmed number of infractions, hidden strike counter, or list of actions that guarantee expulsion.
Why might the expulsion keep happening?
School trouble may be involved
Start by checking whether your Sim skipped class, missed the class interaction while routing around the school, or got caught causing trouble. Skipping class is the clearest documented disciplinary trigger, but the available official description links it to detention—not to a specific expulsion threshold.

Re-enrollment may not resolve the underlying issue
Players have described being expelled after repeated trouble and being expelled again after returning to school. These are individual community reports, not an official explanation of how the game tracks discipline. They do not confirm that re-enrollment clears the cause, or that every repeated expulsion has the same cause. EA Answers HQ player discussion
A repeat expulsion could be a recurring state or bug
If expulsion happens again soon after re-enrollment, a persistent save state or bug is possible, but that cause has not been confirmed. EA’s September 18, 2024 patch notes mention a separate High School Years issue in which teens could randomly stop taking exams; that is evidence that school-related issues have been patched, not evidence that repeat expulsion is a known bug or that a particular fix exists. What to try if your Sim is expelled again
- Check the school day. Look for skipped class, a missed class interaction, or recent caught pranks. Treat these as clues to investigate, not proof of a known expulsion counter.
- Back up the save. Before testing changes, make a copy of the save so you can return to the original if the problem continues.
- Check for game updates. The cited patch notes document a separate school issue fix, but do not list a confirmed repeat-expulsion fix.
- If you use mods, test a separate save copy with mods disabled. This is a cautious way to check whether the issue persists without them; it is not an official EA remedy.
Change one thing at a time and check what happens before making further changes. The available sources do not establish a confirmed reset procedure or guarantee that re-enrollment, an update, or disabling mods will stop repeated expulsion.

High School Years adds in-person classes and teacher interactions, among other high-school gameplay features. Its listing says it requires The Sims 4 and all game updates, but it does not describe the expansion as a fix for expulsion. Purchasing it is not established as a way to resolve the problem.
