In September 2022, he shared a post that riffed on a circulating rumor about Hans Niemann’s win over Magnus Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup. Futurism reported that the post was later deleted. The device claim remained an unsubstantiated rumor, and Musk’s post was a crude joke, not evidence.
What happened at the Sinquefield Cup
On September 4, 2022, 19-year-old Hans Niemann beat Magnus Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis. Carlsen later withdrew from the event. The result drew intense public attention, and speculation about cheating spread quickly across social media and chess forums.
One of the most sensational theories claimed that Niemann had received moves from a collaborator through vibrations from a remote-controlled sex toy. Futurism’s September 15, 2022 account reported that the tournament maintained there was no legitimate reason to believe the rumors. The device story is the claim this article examines, and as of the reporting available from 2022, no source cited by Futurism or other contemporaneous outlets showed that such a device existed or was used.
What Musk posted
Musk had no official role in the tournament or in any investigation. He joined the online discussion by sharing a post that Futurism reproduced, which has since been deleted. The post opened with the line “Talent hits a target no one else can hit,” followed by a crude punchline that turned the rumor into a sexual joke. Futurism described the post as a joke riffing on the rumor.

The distinction matters for how the post is quoted. Attributed to Musk, it is a crude remark about a rumor that was already circulating. It is not an accusation he investigated, a statement of fact, or an endorsement of the underlying allegation, and it does not supply the evidence the rumor lacked.
What the evidence did and did not show
Niemann’s response
Niemann denied cheating at the Sinquefield Cup. In a September 2022 interview quoted by The Guardian, he said, “I have never cheated in an over-the-board game.” He also acknowledged cheating in online games when he was 12, and again in unrated online games while streaming at 16. His denial covered over-the-board play, not the online history he admitted.

Chess.com’s October 2022 report
Chess.com’s October 2022 report alleged that Niemann had likely cheated in more than 100 online games. That figure concerns online games only. The same report said the platform had not found concrete evidence proving that he cheated over the board, including in the game against Carlsen.
These are separate claims. The online allegations do not confirm the sex-toy rumor, and they do not establish cheating in the Sinquefield Cup game.

Statistical evidence and the FIDE inquiry
The Washington Post reported that Chess.com’s investigation did not find an abundance of concrete statistical evidence of over-the-board cheating in the Carlsen game. The same reporting said FIDE, the sport’s international federation, had announced an investigation. Reporting from September and October 2022 describes that inquiry as announced; the sources cited here do not report its outcome, so readers should check FIDE’s own communications for any later result.
Key facts to keep straight
- The event: Niemann beat Carlsen at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup on September 4, 2022. Carlsen later withdrew.
- The device claim: The remote-controlled sex-toy story was a rumor. The reporting cited here does not establish that a device was used.
- Musk’s contribution: A crude, since-deleted post riffing on the rumor, as reproduced by Futurism.
- Niemann’s denial: He denied cheating over the board and acknowledged past online cheating.
- Chess.com’s findings: Its “more than 100” figure referred to alleged online games. It reported no concrete evidence proving over-the-board cheating in the Carlsen game.
How to cite this story accurately
When you repeat the rumor or Musk’s post, keep three details attached to every mention: the date (September 2022), the source that reported the post (Futurism), and the fact that the device claim was never substantiated. Quoting Niemann’s denial alongside his admission of past online cheating gives readers the full record. Quoting Chess.com’s figure without its online-only scope, or describing it as a count of over-the-board cheating, misstates the report.

The reporting in this article is contemporaneous to 2022. It is not an update on any investigation that may have followed.
Readers searching for the literal claim, such as whether Niemann used a vibrating device to cheat against Carlsen, or what Musk said about the rumor, will find the same answer: the claim was a rumor, Musk joked about it, and the cited reporting does not substantiate device use.
