Escape from Tarkov players objected in April 2024 when Battlestate Games launched The Unheard Edition, then reported at $250, with access to a persistent-progression co-op PvE mode. Edge of Darkness (EoD) owners said that access should be covered by their edition’s promise of free access to subsequent DLC. Battlestate said PvE was a feature, not DLC, and later promised EoD owners free access at game release once server capacity allowed. The original paywall framing is historical: later edition clarification and a 2026 Steam listing show that PvE access is not accurately described as universally exclusive to Unheard today.
What triggered the backlash?
In April 2024, Battlestate introduced The Unheard Edition as a premium package that included access to a new co-op PvE mode with persistent progression. PC Gamer reported the edition at $250 and the preceding Edge of Darkness edition at $150. Those are contemporaneous reported prices for the 2024 web editions, not current or directly comparable Steam prices. PC Gamer’s April 25, 2024 report described players’ anger and the dispute over what EoD owners had been promised.
EoD had been marketed with “free access to all subsequent DLCs.” Owners argued that a substantial new PvE mode belonged within that promise, so making it available first through the most expensive edition broke the expectation attached to their earlier purchase. That was the players’ interpretation of the promise—not a legal finding. GameSpot’s April 26, 2024 coverage also reported the launch framing and reaction.
Why did Battlestate say PvE was not DLC?
Battlestate drew a distinction between downloadable content and a game feature or mode. Its April 2024 update, reproduced by Dev Trackers, stated: “First of all, PvE gamemode this is not DLC.” The studio also said the mode used separate network infrastructure and that it did not then have the resources to accommodate all EoD owners immediately. The reproduced developer update is the studio’s stated reasoning; it does not settle whether players’ interpretation of EoD’s marketing promise was right.

In PC Gamer’s account, lead community manager appl3z0r described the mode as “It ain’t DLC, it’s [a] unique feature of the new edition,” in a message on the official Discord. The classification was central to the dispute: Battlestate treated PvE as a feature whose access could be packaged separately, while EoD owners focused on the broad “all subsequent DLCs” promise.
What did “This cannot be tolerated” mean?
PC Gamer reported “This cannot be tolerated” as protest wording used by players urging others to spread their message. The report does not identify a single original speaker, so the phrase should be understood as a community call to action, not an official Battlestate statement or a quotation from a named player.

What did Battlestate promise EoD owners?
After the backlash, Battlestate said EoD owners would receive PvE functionality for free at game release, once server infrastructure had been improved to the required capacity. The studio’s update said: “We observe your dissatisfaction and have decided that the functionality of the PvE mode will be available for free to all owners of the EoD version at the release of the game, when the server infrastructure will be improved to the required capacity.”
The same update also discussed making early access separately purchasable and offering EoD owners a discount. Those were details of the 2024 proposal; they should not be assumed to describe every current purchase option or entitlement. Battlestate’s reproduced update states the plan as it stood at the time.

Is PvE still exclusive to The Unheard Edition?
No: the initial April 2024 framing should not be presented as the current universal access policy. A later developer clarification described persistent-progression co-op PvE access for Unheard, separate purchase access for owners of Standard, Prepare for Escape, and Left Behind, and quest routes for some special items. It is a dated clarification, not a complete live entitlement table, so check the platform and current offer before buying. The reproduced edition clarification also said changes would be announced in advance.
Platform matters as well. Battlestate’s Steam listing shows The Unheard Steam Edition Expansion Pack released on May 20, 2026, requires the Steam base game, and lists a Steam Unheard bundle containing five items, including PvE Zone. When accessed on October 8, 2026, Steam displayed a $184.98 bundle price and a temporary $155.98 sale price. Those are time-sensitive storefront observations, not the 2024 web edition’s $250 reported launch price; Steam prices and sale availability can vary by region and account context. The Steam listing is the platform-specific reference for that package.

Why was the edition criticized beyond PvE access?
The dispute was not only about whether PvE counted as DLC. Players also criticized the value and gameplay advantages bundled into the new edition, with some describing them as pay-to-win. That label reflects player criticism rather than an objective classification. Battlestate’s later clarification said some special items could be earned by owners of other editions through quests, but that statement does not make every edition benefit interchangeable. The edition clarification lists the benefits and quest routes as described at that time.
