In 2025, fans had reasons to speculate that Valve might be working on another Half-Life—but no official announcement confirmed Half-Life 3. The strongest clues were reports about internal game data and a Valve-associated artist’s account of visiting an office. Both had important limits: one depended on a dataminer’s interpretation, and the other did not describe seeing development.
1. Datamined Valve game data drew attention to HLX
In February 2025, Ars Technica reported that Valve game-update data included new variables and strings associated by dataminer Tyler McVicker with a project called HLX. Those references were real material in the data as reported; their meaning was an interpretation, not an identification by Valve.

2. A dataminer read the engine changes as signs of polish
McVicker interpreted changes to Valve’s Source engine as optimization and polish of the kind that can happen late in production. That analysis gave fans a reason to wonder whether an internal project was progressing. It did not establish how far any project had advanced, what it was, or whether it would ship.
3. HLX was widely assumed to be Half-Life 3
Because HLX appeared in Valve-related data and the Half-Life series had no announced sequel, speculation quickly connected the codename to Half-Life 3. But Ars described that identity as widely assumed, not confirmed. PC Gamer’s rumor chronology likewise characterized HLX as ambiguous rather than definitive proof.

4. A Valve-associated artist described visiting an office
In an April 2025 report, PCGamesN recounted remarks by concept artist Evgeniy Evstratiy, who was associated with Valve. In a Russian-language podcast, he reportedly said—in remarks translated by a third party—that he had been in the room where Half-Life 3 was made. That account fueled speculation that some kind of project might exist.
5. The artist said he had not seen development
Evstratiy clarified that he had seen an office, computers, and whiteboards, not development itself. The timing of his visit was also unclear in the report. An office visit is therefore indirect evidence at best: it does not independently establish what was being worked on, when, or whether the work continued.

6. Valve has had Half-Life efforts that never reached release
A 2017 Game Informer interview with an anonymous Valve developer put the rumors in perspective. The developer said, “Valve has never announced a Half-Life 3,” and described multiple separate efforts imagined as Half-Life 3 or Episode 3, some of which were scrapped or moved into other projects. An internal attempt, even if one existed in 2025, would not by itself mean a finished game was coming.
7. Valve had expressed interest in returning to Half-Life
In 2019, Valve designer David Speyrer said many people at the company had wanted to return to the Half-Life universe. Speaking about Half-Life: Alyx, he said the experience “has only reinforced that” desire, and added that Valve would like to continue pushing forward. Steam’s account of Speyrer’s remarks shows interest in continuing the series, but it did not announce Half-Life 3.

| Rumor strand | What it was based on | What it could support | What it did not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| HLX data | Valve game-update strings and variables, reported by Ars Technica; McVicker interpreted the references. | There were reported internal references that prompted speculation about a project. | That HLX was Half-Life 3, that the game was in late production, or that it would release. |
| Office anecdote | Evstratiy’s translated account of seeing an office, computers, and whiteboards, reported by PCGamesN. | He said he had visited an office he associated with Half-Life 3. | That he witnessed development, what was on the whiteboards, or that a game was completed or announced. |
Neither report contained an official Valve announcement naming Half-Life 3. In 2025, the careful conclusion was that the clues gave fans reasons to speculate about a possible internal project—not confirmation that Half-Life 3 was happening or would be released.
